Amid the increasingly visible impacts of climate change, Ministry of Citizens’ Services Real Property Division (RPD) completed the B.C. Government’s first net-zero energy building, changing the future of government facilities. The frontline service delivery building generates all of the energy it requires over the course of a year. While contending with the COVID-19 pandemic, flooding and resulting supply chain issues, the project team delivered this complex project in Williams Lake on time and on budget. The project to acquire, retrofit and outfit a vacant retail box building as an office to serve the community provided an opportunity for RPD to showcase best practices in energy efficient design and construction. Through a strong partnership with its tenant, the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), this project strongly emphasized citizen-centric design, accessibility features and engagement with local First Nations.
