HEALTH UPDATE - My personal WAKE UP CALL
I recently had a pretty good wake up call and health scare and a reminder that life is short.
This is one for all my mates, all the dads, any of you guys that may be travelling Australia or planning your trip. My incident occurred exactly one week before my 51st birthday.
I was enjoying breakfast with some new friends Angie and Rob at a fantastic caravan park just outside of Berry Springs ‘Tumbling Waters’ . We had a couple of photos after brekkie and as we were leaving I suddenly felt as though I was about to faint, racing heart beat, hard to breathe, tingling sensation down the entire right side of my body and temporary loss of vision in my right eye. Katie helped to get me as low as possible to sit on the ground so I wouldn’t hit my head or hurt myself should I lose conciseness. She arranged for a glass of water and also some orange juice and my vision returned very quickly, as did my colour and the feeling in my body and fortunately I didn’t pass out. I knew however that something wasn’t right and realised I needed to get to a hospital asap.
I’d actually been feeling average for the few days leading up to this moment and had had disrupted sleep and a racing heart beat for a few nights prior.
Katie got me to Palmerston Regional Hospital and then I ended up transferring to Darwin Royal Hospital as I needed specialist care and equipment not available at Palmerston. After a series of tests that included a CAT-scan, Brain MRI, heart ultrasound and numerous blood tests over a few days in hospital, I was discharged with a suspected TIA (mini stroke).
However, my report has a caveat subject to an ophthalmology report and bubble test for my heart. Both of which are pending and happening in the coming weeks.
So, the reason I’m sharing is to give you an update but also share as a reminder that you can’t look after 2,3,4,5,6 or how many other people that rely on you, if you haven’t looked after number 1… yourself! This is not an egotistical based comment, this is the truth - and in fact is relevant to every one of us that has a role of responsibility in caring or providing for others.
My results may end up nothing to do with a stroke, but I feel like I’ve been given a very clear hit across the head to wake up and make the most of my days and life. Find a better balance in my lifestyle choices and activities and remember what matters most!!
I know a lot of you will have more questions like how does an active, fairly healthy pescatarian (vego that eats seafood) end up in this position?? A lot of what you don’t see is the amount of endless hours sitting editing and creating content - I won’t stop doing this but I will start getting up every hour to walk around the van, stretch, daily exercise and better moderation on my food and beverage choices. No drastic changes to make a big impact!
The best advice I’ve been given through all of this is "A person with health has a thousand dreams…. A person without health only has one!"
I’d like to thank every one of the nursing and doctor teams that looked after me during my experience in Darwin - your dedication to your work is phenomenal and to every one of you that reached out directly or indirectly to Katie, Jasper and I over the last two weeks - thank you for your love and support. And finally to any blokes out there that feel you need to make some changes, be encouraged to know that you are not alone and I’ll share my journey in support of yours - and make sure you reach out to a mate if you need to chat!!
Take care guys and thank you again!!
Paul
