OMG, being a retired Locksmith, this is so hard to watch, as the lock cylinder (key hole) on your van is super easy to pick open in only a few seconds. Don't feel bad Guys. I actually locked myself out of my Locksmith truck, way out on a job, and had to ask a fellow Locky to come and rescue me, as all my entry tools were, of corse locked up inside the truck, LoL. Yes, I never heard the end of it either from other Locksmiths here in Cairns.

Hi Guys, re spare keys for caravan. We've done a few loops of Aus, and I have a habit of putting the spare keys for the caravan somewhere in the car where we can both remember before moving. It's the spare keys my wife uses to lock up before we go. Main key is on my car key ring. Love the show. John & Helen

Hi Guys, I really felt for you watching what you went through. A couple of weeks ago, we locked ourselves out of our motorhome at 5 pm on a Saturday night - (picked up the wrong keys on the way out and left both sets of motorhome keys inside) We managed to get roadside assist out a couple of hours later, they spent an hour trying to get in with no luck. After lots of phone calls we managed to find an amazing locksmith 120kms away. He agreed to come drive out to us and eventually - at 11pm - we were inside our motorhome. A very expensive lesson learned. We now have a new system where we only lock the doors from the outside with a key. Love watching your adventures. Good luck with your adventures.

Testing days are just part of life, as stressful as it might have been for Jasper, having him be part of the solution was a boss move and it’ll help build his resilience and problem solving creativity. Onward and upward! Wife and I both have our own set of keys, and the car keys clip to the van keys when we’re travelling, we have built a habit that we put our keys on each hook in the van, and we both take our own keys when we leave the van. Just build habits and perhaps consider a key safe bolted to the van chassis as a plan C.
@billschneider18933 ай бұрын
I cannot believe this happened. It simply makes good sense to have three full sets of keys1 set in use 2nd set attached to the caravan in a lock box or another method. The 3rd set attached somewhere under the tow vehicle. NOT IN the vehicle. I've seen a guy slam his door, which promptly locked. No spare under the ute. So he had to break a window to unlock the door as his keys were in the ignition. 3 sets is the answer. Cheaper than a new caravan window or a lock smith.

Oh we certainly know how you all felt. 😱 We locked ourselves out of our Zone a few years back as new caravanners. We had both adopted a bad habit of turning the snib and slamming the door so it was inevitable that we were going to lock ourselves out at some point with no key. It was on a Sunday afternoon in Tumut caravan park. We managed to get hold of the local locksmith but he was unable to pick our lock. Fortunately for us, we had left the spare key on the hook just near the front door and the bathroom window was still open. We borrowed a ladder and used a tent pole with a hook on the end that we used with great difficulty to hook the key and pull it back out the bathroom window. It took us 2 hours and we were the afternoon entertainment. So we learned a few things that day: 1. always use the key to lock and unlock the van door to reduce the risk of lockouts. 2. The van is not actually secure if you leave a spare key on the hook with the bathroom window open. 3. Always have at least one spare somewhere outside the van. My key (the spare) is kept on a ring on the outside of my phone bag and I carry that tiny bag everywhere on my person and so I can’t leave the key hanging in the lock because it’s attached to a phone bag!! Also means I always have a phone camera handy! Scott still does lose his set of caravan and car keys occasionally but since that day we’ve always got access to at least one and usually two spares. We do only have one car key so we tend to be very careful with that one. This is a picture of my phone bag which has been perfect for us - maisondesabre.com/collections/crossbody-bags/products/the-phone-pouch-emerald-green Cheers Thea & Scott with ZN558 🙋♀️🙋♂️

Camec keyless, we are back to keys. I always have my car keys with me, which has van keys. A combination safe allows you to access the keys yourself if you lock yourself out or loose the keys and therefore gain entry to your van without damage. Thieves on the other hand are unlikely to worry about a key when a small jemmy bar or a rock or a thief loaded on ice will force entry.

Hi Guys, yep we do have our Caravan main door key with the car keys, the plus is that if I try to lock the car keys in the car (Jeep Grand Cherokee) the system wont allow you to lock the car, like you too I do keep a spare set of Van keys in the Caravan. With all our years on the road the only time we had a problem was at a free camp area south of Katherine where on one night I forgot to lock the car and someone opened the drivers side door and took my wallet that I had left in the door pocket (silly me), but luckily nothing else was stolen probably because when you open the door at night all the lights come on including the headlights, this would have startled them somewhat, otherwise the rest of the gear in the Jeep would have gone including our Honda Generator..yikes..🙁 We have just arrived home from the same trip you are presently on, I am thinking as an extra caution to invest in an Apple Air Tag to attach to my Car Keys. I should mention also, is that I noticed you have the same type of Caravan Door as us, our tumbler cylinder (where the key fits) broke due to needing some force in turning the key, the cylinder is only made of cast alloy and it is a little fragile, make sure your lock turns freely, if its stiff I can recommend a fix...

I also keep a spare key in a very small tin that is secured by a very strong magnet, underneath the vehicle, just in case l inadvertently left the wallet, in the, locked vehicle. You can also glue a very small tin or plastic container, if the surface isn't magnetic. I've done this since 1969 and it's never left me stranded or embarrassed. Have a spare key/s for the caravan, hidden in the tow vehicle and a spare vehicle key/s hidden in the caravan. Just don't inadvertently have both vehicle and caravan locked up!!

Look up "one key", that's what I have, they rekey all locks so you only need one key and I keep that key on my key ring with my car keys. Could also put spare van key in the car.
