I cooked for my dogs, and they loved this healthy homemade dog food! This recipe of DIY dog food served Maxxie & Pollux 3 meals each.

Absolutely! Mine are spoiled to plain kibble now. I do give them expensive kibble to make sure they get all vitamins they need. They look at me like I’m crazy if there is no cooked food on top of their kibble. I want to give them just homemade but I’m nervous that they will be missing some nutrients. I cook on the weekend and freeze extra.

I don't have pets, so I don't know the struggle to make sure they are getting the best ingredients to prolong their life. Same as humans I suppose! I applaud you for that. My DIL and son have 2 dogs and a cat and she cooks for her dogs daily. I don't know how she does it with holding down her own business, a husband, and a 4 month old baby. Much respect to anyone who cooks for their family and pets. Cooking for family is hard enough.

I have cooked for my dog for 13 years. She gets fed twice a day. I think the best way is to talk to your vet to find that supplements you will need to add to what you are cooking. They can give you the do's and don't s. Everyone has very good intentions telling you what you should do and they all have their favorite ways which work well for them but I think that you and your vet could come up with a game plan.

I used to make my girls food before Covid and they loved it. One thing is that you need to make sure it’s nutritional for their needs. There are supplements that you can add to their food based on their weight.

Our dog had pancreatitis once and HGE once...which is a horrible gastric situation, can be fatal if not treated. She is only 1 1/2 yo! So when she was sick she needed to be on low fat diet. After she got better from that, I have started to boil chicken breast shred it up and keep in a container in fridge. I give her almost half portion of that and half of her regular dog food. (Pedigree kibble for small dogs. ) I mix together with just a drop of water and microwave for 12 seconds, she loves it!! Sometimes I sprinkle a teeny bit of parmesan cheese on it! She loves!!🐕

I cooked for my fur baby before I put him on the Farmer’s Dog.. which is a human grade food. When cooking your own dog food… you have to make sure you are balancing all of the vitamins, minerals, and trace minerals. My counter tops was covered in this supplements and you have to adjust them by your dogs weight. There are products out there that you can buy and add to their homemade food that covers all of these nutritional requirements. Hope this information is helpful. PS…. You can grind the egg shells into the food for their calcium requirements. ❤❤

@@WelcomeToMyCurls Renee, there is a product called “Balance It” that you add to their food that will balance out all of their nutritional requirements. It’s a powder and you just add it to their food. Also, they will require so many ounces of meat per day. My dog is my life and his nutrition was so important to me. I lost two dogs to cancer and almost lost my mind. When researching cancer in dogs one thing kept popping up….. their dog food. Store bought processed dog food can cause cancer. They have to heat it so high to kill the pathogens in it and that in return causes it to be carcinogenic. You are doing the right thing by offering your boys human grade food. ❤️❤️

@@rosemaryburford7607 There is no scientific evidence (to my knowledge) that links most dog foods to cancer. There was a scare about grain-free dog food causing cardiomyopathy (particularly in breeds susceptible to cardiomyopathy in the first place), but that hubbub has really died down recently and I don't know that there was any scientific evidence that indicated that grain-free foods were the culprit.

@@janhankins911 I did read a couple of research papers linking kibble to cancer. They have to heat the food at a very high temperature to kill the pathogens in it. The pathogens are there because they use rendered meat. Listen to Dr. Karen Becker on KZbin…. She has done many videos on this topic. I have lost two dogs to cancer and I will do my best to not let that happen again.

Keep in mind store bought eggs are sprayed with a disinfectant, so best to use shells from fresh farmed eggs or an eggshell powder in supplement form.

This is true love and commitment for the pups. Also one more thing you can add. When I've dog sat, I have added a little nutritional yeast to the dry food and a little water and the dogs lap it up. It adds great taste, vitamins and moisture.

This is true love, I used to cook for my dog, I would use beef bone, cook white rice in beef broth and and add fresh peas and grated carrots.

i cook for our two dogs. We use Slow Feed Puzzle bowls to slow them down while they eat. My husband & I should eat as well-balanced whole foods as our dogs! I toss in fresh blueberries or raspberries & their food is just beautiful. I vary their veggies, except for the spinach - that's always included. If you freeze fresh spinach you can literally crumble the fresh frozen spinach in your hand to save prep time.

Enjoy your videos! Started cooking for my two dogs as well. I do a large amount of dog food and measure it into small stackable containers, label it and freeze the containers. I do about 3 pounds of ground Turkey, 1 pound of chicken livers, 1 pound of chicken gizzards, 1 package of frozen mixed veggies, a few cups of spinach, 6eggs, roasted and ground egg shells and my garden grown frozen strawberries and 2 cups very low sodium chicken broth. I pre cook and brown the Turkey, and chicken livers and throw everything in my Instapot. The gizzards may need pressure cooking before everything else because they are tough. I serve them each meal with a tsp of pumpkin. In the morning they get their probiotics and joint treats. I got them adjusted to it by serving the food with a high quality grain free kibble. Making a large batch saves time. Aren’t dogs amazing!

I used to make mine, I didn't use chicken broth , and frozen vegetables. I made big batch to last a week. Then one dog got finicky and refuse to eat. So bought kibble from the honest kitchen with beef pour overs they love it. If there happy I'm happy!

Hi Renee, I cooked your recipe last Sunday, for our rescue mini poodle we have had with us for 6 years. She absolutely LOVES it! She is getting fussier as she gets older, (now 10.) She had started refusing frozen home delivered healthy dog meals with very natural ingredients after 7 months on them. She’s had skin issues for months & months, so I’m going to ask my vet what he thinks of the recipe, next week & if I should add anything else (like vitamins). Hi Renee, I showed your recipe to my vet this week & he said it is great! The only thing he feels they need extra in their diet is calcium. You can buy this as a doggy supplement. After the first week of your chicken recipe, I cooked the beef version, then decided to try Suzi with half of that mixed in with a half serving of the frozen meals she had been refusing. These meals have calcium, so it’s the best of both for her now. 6 nights now & she again is licking the plate clean! I am so excited, she is finally loving meal time. Oh, the boys knew it was for them! So so cute!!! There is a big debate about dog food. The vets usually recommend dog food (kibble), some promote certain brands and insist on them, but if you look on the ingredients list of the mass market brands, some recommended by vets, you'll just ask yourself why would you feed that to your furry children. A friend always jokes that her dogs eat better than her and feeds them a clean recipe kibble, and her dogs, both seniors now, have great blood work, excellent digestion and a healthy liver and heart, which surprises all the vets. I have friends who used to cook their dogs food at home and the dogs seem to thrive on that. One senior dog who is home fed got pancreatitis recently, but she is fond of fatty meats and her parents rather indulged her with that. Indeed, the vets say that food formulated for dogs has some enzimes and vitamines, so it might be worth to ask your vet about that. So yeah, quite the dilemma!

You can do like I do for myself and that is batch cook. I cook in large portions to last 4 or 5 days and divide it in meal portions and either set in fridge or freeze, then when it's time to eat I warm it in my microwave. It makes meal time so much easier.

I boil chicken breast, let and tear in to pieces and freeze in freezer containers, then when it's time to feed my schnauzer Jack, I take a container with the chicken breast into the microwave 2 mins, and microwave his sweet potato and broccoli, Brussels sprout or green beans...he loves it

Is there a reason for feeding such a lean meat such as chicken breast? Dogs need a certain percentage of fat for energy and thigh meat contains more fat and heart healthy Taurine.

This is great to see, your dogs are so sweet. I do both, I mostly feed my dog Caesar which is a wholesome dog food, sometimes putting some rice I cooked or a little cooked oatmeal in it. I'll have to try this recipe. I've also made him chicken (I boil chicken breast then shred that up) and rice sometimes with some cooked carrots. I don't want to give up the commercial dog food completely, one because I think it would be too much to feed him every meal myself and two to make sure he gets everything he needs regularly that I may not be able to provide. I did enjoy this video and love this recipe.

Not sure which one loved it more! After one of my dogs got extremely sick from package dog food I started making their food. They loved raw chicken and raw eggs. They would even eat the shells. There are so many foods you can introduce into the dogs diet, just go slow or they might get tummy issues from the changes.

❤❤ I have been selling homemade dog food for over 2-1/2 years now. My recommendation is to add less rice or instead collie lower riced broccoli sweet potatoes they sell at the supermarket. Spinach, kale, carrots, pumpkin purée and with each bowl you can crush a vitamin. Salmon oil I would also recommend as the food cooked from home does not have all the dogs will need to meet nutritional at a holistic level. If yum have a juicer you can juice just cucumber, another thing you can do is juice turmeric root celery and dogs love love love celery and add many things. There’s nothing like homemade cooked food for our canines. Love this❤

Another thing is that they need fresh ground bone, marrow, organs and muscle meat. You can get organ complex powder freeze dried and add it on top or just get the actual organs and include that in your crockpot or stove. They also need macro and micro nutrition. Another thing is primal goats milk is my go to as it will ring a sick dog back really quick. Enzymes and pre-pro-post biopics are essential. If you have a senior dog especially that’s is key. I love dr Harvey’s fresh dehydrated food as well. I also recommend that when my clients can’t dehydrate their dogs food or can’t have access to what the dogs actually need. Peace and blessings!!! ❤

Yes I do cook for my Golden Retriever. He is 14 yrs 9 months old. He has just been diagnosed with a large tumor on his spleen. He loves chicken, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, peas, rice...list goes on. Hes a old boy so what makes him happy is what he can have. ❤

That is great, Renee! I cooked for my sweet, furry kid chicken, steak, rice, eggs, peas and the like; without any seasoning but I'm sure spices like turmeric are fine. As someone said that I agree with, check with a vet or even animal nutritionist (I'm sure they have that specialty). And as some others who said it's too time consuming, please strongly consider if it's too time consuming for your body's nutritional needs to cook yourself a good meal? I bet it's not. Just do it for them the same time you cook for you. You can even still buy dog food (of good quality) and put it side by side or alternate some days. BTW, that's why dogs scarf it down; their bodies are craving the nutrition they need and deserve! Bless these babies.💝

When I cook up chicken I save the bones. When I have enough I make a pot of chix stock which I use to boil up some white rice. I use this mixture plus some fresh (or canned veggies) and add it to some (grain free) kibble. I make enough to last 10-14 days and keep it in a bucket in the fridge. Every night I scoop out a portion for her dinner and nuke it to take the chill off of it. I started doing this a few years ago in an effort to make the bag of dog food stretch farther than just feeding it dry would last. Anyway, I don't do just raw or just table scraps because of the nutritional needs aspects discussed by other posters, but it also makes me feel good that I am giving her something more than just the same boring dry food every day. And, it is much simpler to "batch" cook than to cook fresh every night. I sometimes don't even cook "fresh" for myself at night, but when I do she usually winds up licking the plate clean before it goes into the sink!

I cook for my 14 years old pug for last 12 years. Once a month I cook & freeze it in ziplock bags. It is a project but she loves it. My recipe is: ground beef, chicken liver, barley, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli or cauliflower or spinach, sometimes scrambled eggs. And yes some fat is good for dogs so I don’t care about lean meat.

We make our boys food and use as a topper with just a little hand full of kibble. They love it!! Lean Turkey, green beans and carrots. We mix it up and add little squash once in a while or rice. Our boys get so excited at dinner time!! Our Schnauzer Beards are always a hot mess!🤣

I've been doing this for over a year now. My dog and cat love it. My recipe is a bit different though. Got it here on youtube. I use 2 cans of wysong (cheaper than buying chicken) can chicken or salmon, 1 sweet potato, two bags of frozen green beans, 2 carrots, spinach or kale, 1 cup brown rice pre boiled, Tumeric and a cup of water and use my pressure cooker. When done I add coconut or omega 3 fish oil, pureed pumpkin for dogs then I use a hand blender to puree it. It makes enough for almost a weeks worth so I do freeze some.

I agree with you about the dog food. I change up the protein between ground turkey or beef and chicken breast. I also use a can of sardines (in water not oil) when I don't feel like cooking. It's fast and easy. I use organic brown rice with chicken or beef bone broth. It has all kinds of good vitamins and minerals. I use chopped up Lacinato kale. I save the stems. I put them in the freezer and give them as treats. I do add glucosamine and fish oil. My dog has hip dysplasia. I tried turmeric with pepper, but she wouldn't eat it with that in it. You can dry out the eggshells and grind them into powder for calcium. Pollux and Mooey definitely loved their dinner.🙂

Yep, I used to make my dog’s food. It never lasted as long as I thought it would. I learned not to put certain things in her food-she would leave all the peas, for example, lined up outside her dish. No more peas. I used to buy cooked canned chicken, too. This just got *very* expensive and time-consuming. And my dog never seemed satisfied. So I stopped making her food. Tried feeding her raw food, too. That was a definite no-go. So now she gets a can in the morning and a can in the evening. And I just leave it at that.

I've been making our Schnoodle homemade food since she was a puppy. One thing to be careful about (forgive me if someone already mentioned this). Cooking stock can contain quite a bit of onion and garlic, which is toxic to dogs. Maybe once in a while is okay but if fed it everyday, it could be harmful. It's better to just use water or make your own without onion or garlic. Another tip...anytime you cook a whole chicken, save the carcass in the freezer. Boiling with any veggies that are in your veggie bin will make really great stock for them. Good luck and I hope this is helpful. Also, I make the food in bulk for the week and portion it out. You're doing the right thing!

I make my own dog and cat food. We invested in a meat grinder and have a Vitamix to mix up the organ meat. I follow vet recipes for chicken, turkey, and beef. You do have to buy some supplements but it's not bad considering how long they last. We don't cook it, we feed it to them raw and they all kind of "glow" with health! It's so healthy for them and after doing it for 5 years we have a system down so that we make about 6 weeks worth at a time of dog food and about 3 months worth at a time of cat food.

I have been feeding my West Highland Terrier a homemade diet for most his life (he is 15). I do a batch every 3-4 weeks in the crockpot. 4 lb lean ground turkey, 2 zucchini, 24 oz bag frozen cut green beans, 1 frozen bag peas and carrots, white rice (brown is hard on his tummy). Cook turkey first, then add vegies and cook a couple more hours. Let cool, bag up in Ziplock bags then store in freezer. Sometimes I will add a tablespoon of pumpkin when serving, or a soft-boiled egg including the shell (lots of calcium in the shell).

Both my shihtzu and Shepard mix have sensitive stomachs. My shepard mix is on science diet prescription diet and my shihtzu nutro lamb and rice .but sometimes I boil chicken breast or a scrambled egg and mix it with their dogfood. They love it.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed their home cooked meal! It looked delicious. I also retired this year and have been thinking about moving my two girls off of kibble now that I have more time. I don’t know that I have the dedication to cook for them full-time though. Let’s be real…Sometimes I don’t feel like cooking for me and my husband. I have one very picky eater who would boycott all other food once she tastes homemade so I need to decide carefully. Although they are fed high quality dog food, I have concerns about the advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) produced by the very high cooking temperature. I recently started adding an air dried food now (Badlands Ranch) to their kibble, which they absolutely love. It is shelf-stable for a year so it’s convenient. Maybe I can do a combination of BR and home cooked. Thank you for the recipe Renee and the motivation to tryout the home cooked meal.

I'm only a minute in lol You can make in bulk and do individual means or freeze a few days worth and refrigerate for cpl days and rotate out lol 🤷‍♀️ Just a thought..

Your doing great making your own pup food, may I advise you to try to find low sodium broth? The regular stuff has to much sodium. I'm sure you may have noticed they drank alot of water that night, at least mine did before I figured it out.

What is nice about your recipe is that it could be added to the top of their bought dog food or you could replace a quarter of the regular meal as a meal dress with this extra nutrition. Im sure with their regular daily food wiyh this, they will benefit from your extra efforts.

Chicken or beef, green beans, beets, spinach, carrots, Lima beans. All veggies canned, no salt where available. No rice, carbs not needed for my heavy hound. No seasonings added. They love it.

LOVE THIS CONTENT!!🤗 Cancer in dogs has exploded over the decades and is largely attributed to the pet food industry. I have 3 special needs dogs and I make their food in the Instapot which couldn’t be easier…I switch out the proteins and veggies to give them variety and also the add-ins…may use bone broth for one pot, turmeric and pepper for another.. Handy tip: you can cook any meat (chicken, chops etc) with bones in and pressure cook it for 3 hours and they bones are incredibly soft but they still get all the calcium (bones should be about 20% of the meal which could be substituted with egg shells too)! You can also find great canine multivitamins to add to their food to make sure they are getting all their nutrients! I get chewable peanut butter-flavored vitamins from Amazon 😊

Please no boiled bones for dog, please!!! Those little pieces of incredibly soft bones can badly hurt dog's stomach or intestines and that's really not fun. If bones for dogs then just raw ones. Please be careful about it.
