I talked with my vet about making home made dog food and said I used brown rice. He stated that it might be better to use white rice as the "husk" of brown rice might be a little more difficult for a dog's stomach/intestines to process that part of the rice kernel. I tend to use the long grain white rice but I also use lentils and sometimes rolled oats in the dog foot I made. I also "change up" the items I put in it like chopped up apples, blueberries, kale, and a small amount of corn. Yes to green beans, peas, carrots, pumpkins, sweet potatoes, for sure, but I think dogs like a bit of a change up once in awhile too. I've added salmon oil to the finished food in small "squirts" as well as bone broth (both chicken and beef). I've also used the "day old" meats at the grocery store that are marked down - veal, porkloin, chicken breasts and even roasts. Again, change up is good to keep them interested. I have a small, 10 pound dog, so when I cook it in the Instapot, it's a one and done deal. I'm making a pot of stew that I taste and if it tastes good to ME, then I know it's good for her! Last, I have a vacuum sealer and I scoop in a cup in each open bag, seal them, freeze most of them and leave out four for the next two days so all I have to do is grab two more (one in the morning, one in the afternoon) and she's happy and healthy - her poops are great, too!

@kimdagnillo8246 Жыл бұрын
@@reginaray8874 I’ll tell you that I’ve noticed that my dog’s breath doesn’t stink like my son’s dogs who only eat dry food . Her coat is better too. As far as longevity, I feel no matter how long or short their life was/is or will be , feeding real food is keeping her healthier and happier and if a vet doesn’t agree with your feeding practices, too bad for them, it’s about money for them first, if a vet was putting an animal’s health first, getting repeated vaccinations yearly would never happen. That also causes disease within the animals body. Did you know they get the same amount to a St. Bernard as they do a small dog when it comes to rabies and vaccination shots ! I used to see a homeopathic vet , she moved out of state, when my dog got the rabies shot it would make her aggressive for a few days after, I told her about it and she found a rabies vaccine that had no additives or something else I can’t remember, when she used that one 3 years later my dog had no reaction to it at all, she lived into her 15 th year so she had at least 4 of those rabies shots with no side affects after. These conventional vets of today are trained just like the drs of us are, push pills to keep you coming back, never getting off that wheel of a level of sick that won’t kill you , but keep you so unbalanced you just keep going back to try and fix a problem they created, all in the name of Money . Unfortunately it’s that simple but people can’t/won’t see it. Make your food your medicine and your medicine your food, holds true for animals and people. We need to do our own research and feel what’s right for our situations.

I've got two dogs with IBS, one front door, one back door. I've been working with a vet that practices Eastern medicine for 3 years now. Western practice vets offered my dog only steroids and I wasn't going down that path. My dog had lost so much weight from multiple bowel movements daily. The vet told me to make Congee for my dogs. Within one day, my dog started to get better and now has no issues, although he will always have the immune system IBS. I use ground turkey and ground beef fried up and placed into a 32 ounce containers, make sure to include the fat from the beef. For veggies I use green beans, yellow squash, zucchini, broccoli and sometimes beets. I cook them in the microwave, mix them together and put them in 16 ounce containers. Once they cool down they go in the freezer. When it's time to make a batch of dog food I take one cup of rice to 4 cups of water and add about two thumbs of fresh ginger grated. Then I just take one container of meat and one of veggie thawed and mix it together. To it I add powdered vitamins. I keep a month of food in the freezer at a time and just take out a weeks worth and make the rice. I also use lentils and quinoa instead of rice, alternating them using the same 1 to 4 ratio. All that food looks great, but I would add a fat if you are only using ground turkey. A tablespoon of olive oil per 2lbs of ground turkey would do. If your adding beef, no oil is necessary. Congee is a great food for a dog with an upset stomach or bowel issues. Chicken is considered a "hot" food and not recommended for dogs with stomach issues. Just passing on what I wish I had known years ago and something that truly works.

UPDATED - Been making my two Aussie's food for 3 years now - 100% trial and error. Both apparently have sensitive stomachs as they routinely regurgitated kibble. Did not run my mixture by any vet and, frankly don't care what people say who make their money from selling pet stuff. All I know is my dogs are healthy, happy, and finish their food in less than 2 min every time. I also discovered (trial and error) a blend that has completely eliminated their scratching (they were on Apoquel for it). For protein, I use boneless chicken breasts (shreds much easier but thighs are okay too, but messier and you are paying for the bones), raw or boiled eggs. Leaving the shells in occasionally provides a great source of calcium provided you puree the food. Research it. Egg shells are good calcium for humans too. I boil the chicken, let it cool then place in gallon bags. When I add to their food, I use about 1.5 cups in a medium-sized bowl, shredding it by hand. Remember, I'm combining in one bowl to feed two 45 lb dogs, so adjust accordingly. Vegetable matter is a combination of either 7 lbs sliced carrots OR 7 lbs sliced sweet potatoes combined with 2 Lbs of either green peas or green beans, all of which I boil then puree with an immersion blender. It is then stored in a gallon pitcher. HELPFUL HINT: When either the chicken or vegetables have boiled for 5-10 min, shut off the heat, leaving the pot where it is, then place a lid over it. After a few hours, it will be cooked to perfection with no boil-overs or scorching. I either save half a gallon of the broth from boiling the chicken which I dilute with water, storing it in a 1 gallon pitcher in the fridge OR (much more convenient) buy the store brand cartons of beef or chicken broth at Walmart. The store bought broth takes up much less space in the fridge I use about 1 cup raw oatmeal (non-instant). Raw is okay if you puree the finished mixture. Most animals aren't allergic to oatmeal. My dogs are fed twice daily. They share 50/50 from the following mixture: Start with the oatmeal in the bottom of the bowl followed by the raw or boiled eggs. Then, the chicken, plus 1.5 large serving spoons of the pureed vegetable matter. I purchase Omega 3 oil from Amazon in the 32 oz pump bottle, sourced from wild-caught North Atlantic sardines, and use 2 squirts. One bottle lasts me 3 months. I then add 1 to 1.5 cups of broth and puree that combination with an immersion blender. You can serve cold or warm in the microwave for about 2 min. I split the mixture between the two dogs. They get this twice/day. They lick their bowls clean then lick each other's bowl. Tons of energy and have thick, shiny coats with zero scratching and healthy stools. Non-scientific but it works for them. Vet says they are at ideal weight and look fantastic.

@@Caareenkm6726 Ideal? No. That was never my objective. Protein is, by far, the most expensive ingredient of any pet food. If I could afford to feed two adult Aussies on a diet of raw beef liver and red meat, I would. Most can't afford to do that. As a side note: liver is messy and smells bad. My objective was to come up with something healthier than kibble that they will eat, and I've done so. Most kibble alleges it is 18-30% protein by weight. What I make is 50% protein by weight. Farmer's Dog is 50% protein by weight. From their website: "...green (and orange) vegetables provide important health benefits to dogs. They can provide your dog with an array of key vitamins and minerals, including phytonutrients; AND, "Fresh legumes like chickpeas, and vegetables like sweet potatoes provide vitamins and minerals as well as additional fiber, a key component of a dog’s diet-it helps maintain digestive health and a healthy gut, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and leaves your dog feeling full for longer. From the American Kennel Club: "Eggs are a great source of nutrition for your dog. They are high in protein, fatty acids, and vitamins that help support your dog inside and out"; AND, "This heart-healthy breakfast [oatmeal] is rich in soluble fiber, vitamins, and minerals such as iron, zinc, and B vitamins that help support your dog's coat and skin. The high fiber content helps promote digestion and weight management." I now add three squirts of Amino 3 fatty acid oil sourced from wild caught North Atlantic sardines. My dogs are healthy, vibrant, have beautiful coats, have no 'itch problems', zero gastrointestinal issues, and they lick their stainless bowls clean until they shine like a new penny each and every feeding. If you can afford the ideal diet, go for it. Most can't and if that is the only alternative left to pet owners, a lot of dogs will be UNNECESSARILY relegated to a lifetime diet of kibble.

My Vet will never push the fact that you have to use dog food from the store make your OWN. I really learned abought dog food was when our beloved Molly went into kidney failure which came on suddenly. She was put on a kidney disease diet. So we did order canned dog food for her kidney disease and I looked at the ingredients and saw I have those ingredientswere actually on hand in my kitchen. Our Vet was sure by her lab work she at most was down to day,s. I came home and I started making her dog food and she ended up living for 4 month's. Happy our youngest dog of the 2 was so close to Molly. Here we have this huge Pit Bull who was a gentle giant and our rescue chihuahua and they were inseperable. So I never feed my dog's who are family bought dog food I make my own and they are healthy, well it is just Happy now and I make her food. So bless you for sharing this video to make other's aware.

Thanks for the recipe. Our vet is a nutritionist. He realises not everyone has even an hour or two free to make food nor has a big enough freezer to store a two week supply of home made pet food. He has two short cut dietary recipes he hands out with every visit, depending on the size/breed/health needs of the pet. One is a B.A.R.F. recipe for those who want to feed their pets that type of diet and the other is for those who prefer a traditional diet.The recipes' ingredients are similar to Farmer's Dog but is for two day servings. It works well for city apartment dwellers with small refrigerators and almost non-existent freezers. It takes about as much time to make one's own meal (while at the same time preparing a meal for a pet) or in the time it takes for a delivery guy to deliver an order of take out. Our pets are 10 and 15 years old, healthy w/no health problems. Many pet owners would prefer to make their own pet food but for a variety of reasons (mobility, health, financial, time, and/or space) cannot.

You could potentially portion it in ziplocs or large cupcake liners and freeze the mix, take it out the night before to thaw. This would not keep for 2 weeks fresh in the fridge, let alone 3 or 4. I like this guy! Very down to earth and natural, no pretense. Am going to try this for my Huskies

I actually do this already for my husky (11 years old) though I use the Just Food for Dogs recipe which in my case is Turkey and macaroni. I do include a nutrient powder they sell that I add once everything has cooked and cooled along with fish oil (per cooking instructions). I keep 4 or so in the fridge and the rest i put in freezer zip locks and store in the freezer. I pull out 2 or so 2 nights before I plan to use them to give them plenty of time to thaw. its saved me money on both vet bills to keep a healthy husky and food. she's keeping up with puppies. her coat is radiant and stomach issues since I've switched to home prepped meals have completely gone way. good luck

Every night we put a new bag in the fridge, come morning time the food is thawed and ready to be served. 2 cups in the AM with 1 organic egg, and 2 cups at 5pm with apple slices. One thing we add to the instapot when cooking his food are grinded up egg shells, we also add rosemary to his food. We've always had American Bulldogs, our last one was a beast (in a good way)😂 he died a few years ago, but lived to be 15yo. I never thought we would ever get another dog (too sad to even think about it) but we missed having a dog so we just got another AB, he is a few months old. I have a small instant pot that I use only to cook the rice and kidney beans at the same time. I generally use 2 Costco chickens beef or chicken liver and a couple pounds of whatever beef is on sale. The veggies, carrots, sweet potatoes, broccoli, zucchini, greens pumpkin, flax seed all go in the blender. I use 2 large pots on my induction stovetop. Boil the carrots and sweet potato for about 10 minutes then add the rest of the veggies and let it simmer for another 10 minutes. I then add the cooked meat and chicken that has also gone through the blender. Constantly stirring throughout the process. I then bag it in ziplocks, about 2 lbs per bag. Freeze the bags flat. Thaw a bag every morning in water. Takes most of a day. Good thing I’m retired.

That’s wonderful that you are making food for Sable. I used to cook my Lab’s food and then switched to raw. She’s a chocolate, too. It was so much faster and no cooking. You are so right that this is better for them. Since my girl started raw food she is no longer on expensive and potentially harmful allergy medications from the vet. Her allergies are 95% reduced. Her fur has filled in where she scratched it off, is shiny, and the inflammation is gone. Kudos to you for making Sable’s food and sharing your recipe and method with others. Sable is beautiful! I use ground turkey, organ meat, spinach, broccoli, and red peppers. As well as eggs, crushed egg shells, ginger, kelp powder, and stinging nettle leaf. If you can, pick two organ meats like liver, spleen, testes, tripe, etc. Don’t use heart, tongue or any muscle organ meat. They don’t count as organ. Also, I add Carlson’s Cod Liver oil and some Hemp Seed oil. My vet does not approve. Why? She is so healthy now. She is up to her optimum weight. She rarely gets ear infections and is such a healthier looking dog. The inflammation on her face and around her eyes is gone. I was always going in for ear medications for her, along with ear swabs. Again, why? I heard it myself from a vet, because allergies are great money maker for them. My job is to keep my dog happy and healthy. Healthy food is expensive, but so are appts, tests, and potentially harmful medications like Apoquel and Cytopoint. Best wishes to you and Sable. She’s one lucky girl! 🐕

💖 ~ My college biology professor gave my class 4 important food diet tips: 1. Eat flax seeds. 2. Only eat organic bananas🍌 cuz US chem co. sells illegal to use here DDT to countries that grow bananas = many DDT sprayings during growing season, then more DDT sprayings (WET!!! Saw hidden undercover cam video in class), then more DDT sprayings (WET!!!) ON the dock just before forklift loading branches of bananas onto a ship to bring 'em to us in the USA ... . He said IF you don't buy organic, then wash bananas well-carefully peel without touching fruit-wash hands well with soap & water-eat fruit-wash hands with soap & water well. Prof said those heavy & repeated doses of DDT will permeate to your skin & into your pores just from touching banana skins. He said DDT helps kill tarantulas ... . 3. Never eat pork & don't feed it to your pets = parasites + ALL of the toxic chemicals the pigs eat & drink that's in their food & that their injected with B4 killed = is NEVER excreted via pigs' pores cuz pigs don't have sweat glands to E-VON sweat + prof said bacon is WORST part of pig to eat cuz bacon is mostly fat & all of the toxic chemicals in the entire lifetime of the pig is BIOACCUMULATED IN THE PIG MEAT & SEVERELY CONCENTRATED IN THE PIG'S FAT!!! 4. NEVER EAT, NOR FEED PETS LIVER!!! Prof said the LIVER of humans & animals is the organ that BIOACCUMULATES ALL OF THE TOXIC CHEMICALS ingested, breathed, touched, soil & air & living environment pollution chemicals, & medicines/injections subjected to = LIVER = TOXIC TO EAT. READ FOOD & TREAT INGREDIENTS & AVOID, like the plague it is - CARCINOGENIC = CAUSES CANCER +++++++!!!!!!! 5. 🎯 When I told my puppy's vet in 1994 that I'd like advise on how to make healthy treats for him, he recommended a book that he was raising his own two Old English Shepherds on & that it also had recipes in it. 6. 💝 💔 My adorable Lucky, a 4-week-old Humane Society abandoned puppykins, was a mix of Old English, plus Bearded Collie & Irish Wolfhound & lived for 16 years AFTER being poisoned severely by my alcoholic neighbor's toxic & (he stole it from his job) illegal-to-use-in-my-state weed killer that the wind blew onto my yard & organic garden - killed everthing & gave my dog seizures + blood-red eyes & inner ears + partly blinded him; & made me sick & elevated my liver enzymes ... cuz the chemicals concentrated in my liver ... .) ⭐ 7. Vet wanted to euthanize my Lucky. NO WAY!!! I successfully nursed my flips-in-mid-air-Frisby catcher/squeekie-teasing scamp back to health using recipes in "Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Health for Dogs and Cats" - the book my puppy's vet recommended on our 1st visit in 1994 was totally ear-marked & notes in margins & stars & blue-black-red ink pens used to underline & yellow-pink-blue-green highlighters used & bookmarkers galore ... after 10 years of daily use, that book's binding was totally destroyed ... I carefully used that disheveled book for six more years, until my "angel puppy Lucky Wucky" died at age 16. Miss him.💔 😎 💘 8. Best days of my life were spent going on wooded hikes & metal hunting adventures & playing for six hours in the yard with all of his toys & going to lakes & rivers for swims. He protected me against assault from three different predatory men, & he saved his pet-sitter's baby's life. I saved him from a pit bull attack by draping my body over him in the middle of the street & hitting the loose pit bull with my key chain & screaming for help - took two tries for the owner to drag his mad dog to his kennel ... when we we safe, I relaxed my tented body from my Lucky - he sat up, turned around to look me in my eyes, then touched his lips to mine ... he actually gave me a "Thank You" kiss!!!💋 Lucky was the BEST dog I ever had.💯 👍✌🤙 💜 ✝️ 💜 👊 🇺🇸 ⚖ If you wish for peace, prepare for war. 💖

First thing in the morning I gave my puppy coconut oil (I placed it in the ziplock bag, make it flat and keep in the fridge so it is easy to break a peace) like sizes of two peas. It is good for teeth (pull out), for hear and for digestion.

According to Dr. Gundry, brown rice isn’t better for people either because the toxic lectins are in the brown outer part. It also is more likely to hold on to the herbicides and pesticides. Brown rice tested high for a poison (can’t remember at the moment what it is🙄)

As a retired chef, dog lover and frustrated pet food buyer it doesn't matter to me how much time it takes me in the kitchen to make wonderful meals for my beagle (Cooper). Between the recipe here and all the lovely advice in this comment section you have made both of our lives so much better in the food department -- for Cooper that's the only department that matters. Thank you all so much. Apparently I have to finally break down and buy an Instapot if for nothing else but its size. Next you're going to make me buy an airfryer (which is a glorified toaster oven btw).😉

Okay but my air fryer and instant pot are my most used appliances. We hardly use the oven anymore unless baking or bulk meals. I used tot hink the airfryer was just a toaster oven but the results are so much better in my air fryer than my old toaster oven. And my instant pot is amazing, it's a pressure cooker that you can also use as a crock pot or a stove top. I love making birria and chicken adobo in it!

@@crystalyensko2645I have a feeling traditional kitchens are going to disappear in the next few decades anyway. We don't need kitchens the way we used to at all; if I lived alone I'd probably only need a gas burner and a toaster oven/air fryer. However my 75y/o mom feels she can't live without a lot of the old things.

i personally don’t use my air fryer (was gifted to us) due to the limited counter space, and I prefer my crockpot over the instapot -there’s some crockpots you can get that can so multiple things without taking stuff out like that one i have (gifted to us) sautées, yogurts, stews, etc. i love being able to sear my meats and add everything else in after in one pot that I can put in the dishwasher

Homemade food for dog is the best in my opinion, every morning my lab will run to the fridge and wait for me to grab her food, she always excited to eat and she become much more active and no more paw licking but yes, it is time consuming to make enough food to last a week or two for sure. Thank you for sharing your way of making it in Instant Pot ^^
@juandelrio1528 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing your recipe. I’ve been making homemade food for over a year and our dogs love it. I used a recipe I found on the internet (2.5 lbs. chicken (breast or thigh), 2 cups of chicken broth, 3 scramble hard eggs, 2 cup cooked rice (brown is better but white is OK), 1 lb. cooked broccoli, 1 large sweet potato, 2 medium apples with skin, and ¾ cup of dry parsley. At feeding time, I give them ¼ cup of the food with 1 teaspoon of pumpkin with a little dog supplement (3 times a day). The chicken, chicken broth and the sweet potatoes go into the Instapot for 3 minutes, so the chicken is not over cooked. I then use a food processor for the chicken, sweet potatoes, eggs, apples and broccoli. I then use a large plastic tub for mixing as the different items get cooked. I also do double batch so it will last about two weeks. Because I use an Instapot, rice cooker, food processor, skillet and a mixing tub, my kitchen is also a war zone.

@FridaysCreek10 ай бұрын
Double check no onion or garlic in the chicken broth, no no's for dogs. Low sodium or salt free also best.
@joanies67788 ай бұрын
@FridaysCreek Even better, make your own. I save all the bones from the meat I cook for myself and freeze the bones until I have enough to make broth. If I have leftover veggies that need to be used up, I may throw those in the pot. Never salt, onion, or garlic, though. I found an organic meat source online and plan to order chicken feet to make broth, too. Chicken feet are full of collagen which is really good for dogs... and for humans. 😊

It took me a long time to start using my common sense. I started out my journey scared to death that i was gonna screw up my dogs if i fed them healthy real food. Its not complicated once your eyes are opened. Dogs/cats are like our children and for some, they are all we have. We love them or why else have them. We want what is best for them. Period. I have 4 dogs( 3 Beagles❤ 1 french bulldog). About 8 years ago my beagles weight was 55-60 pounds. They are almost 13 years old now and are at the 30ish pound weight. They run and play. No ear problems except for the occasional irritants, no smelly or itchy skin. Its pretty amazing when i compare them to my past pets at this age. Food is key along with not over vaccinating, staying away from all the toxic flea meds. Did you know that fleas are more attracted to unhealthy bodies? Those greasy hard pebbles of dog food just pour out from your dogs skin. Do you know what those pebbles are made from and how they are prepared? Ill leave that part up to you. All i want to say is dont be afraid to change your dogs food. Yeah MAYBE at the beginning they may have a little upset stomach because they are use to eating crap, mine did not, but i guess theres always that possibility. Its not gonna hurt them. You also have to ask yourself, what would my dog eat in the wild? Once you do that you will have your answer. I remember a vet getting mad at me because i cooked for my dogs and wouldnt accept the free bag of dog food she was offering. They dont teach a lot about nutition in vet school. In my opinion if you just gave your dog a slab of meat every day and nothing else they would be better off then feeding the kibble. Preparing your dog food will become so easy after a few tries. A piece of cake if you will. Raw meat is the preference but i cook my dogs meals which is 2nd. I went out and got one of those hugh stainless steel stock pots. Once every 4-5 days i prepare my dogs meals. My dogs eat 2 meals a day. About 2 cups per meal. I sometimes precut veggies and freeze but usually not. I dont weigh, measure, or stress. I rotate the meats and veggies for variety. I dont use vitamins or powders because they are eating real healthy food. I fill my stock pot up about half way with fresh water. Then i add the meat and veggies. Chicken turkey lamb fish salmon veal hearts liver etc are the meats i rotate but may use 2 or 3 different meats at a time(they wont mind lol). Meat being your number one ingredient. For veggies I switch around and mix up a variety of greenbeans, squash, zuchinni, eggplant, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower etc. I occasionally give blueberries strawberries. I let it cook and i am done. Let cool then store in fridge. Super easy. If you have less than 4 dogs the food will last longer or you could make smaller batches. If your dog is trying to lose weight or have allergies i would stear clear of the potatoes, oatmeal, carrots, rice , carbs in general. Get titer test instead of vaccinating. Dogs do not need all these shots year after year and for most, one shot is enough to last there whole life. I have done the titer test a few times and my dogs are good to go. No more. I dont put flea meds, powders, collars on my dogs. I dont need them. If it kills the fleas then what is it doing to my dogs? I dont do the heart guard month after month. I feel so bad for not learning this sooner so that my past dogs could have had a healthier life like my dogs do now but we live and learn.

I never heard of people making their own dog food before I got a dog a few months ago. He had itching and dandruff, and I knew I did NOT want him on drugs to clear the symptoms and not the problem. So I started querying about quality kibbles and switched his food for better grades several times... Then KZbin videos on the topic started popping up. One thing led to another, and I got educated fast on nutrition for dogs. Mine has been completely off kibble for several weeks, now. The sad thing is so many veterinarians push kibble and never educate the public on the benefits of human grade foods prepared at home. We believed their advice because it's all we knew. Now with social media and access to internet on our phones, info is just a click away. I feel for those who never adjusted or accepted technology, and feed their fur babies garbage like "Old Roy". They just don't know any better because they have not been exposed to the truth about kibble.😢

Since then, he has become more active, it looks like he’s lost weight, his coat is soft & shiny, and he eats the whole bowl of food as soon as I set it down. Prior to making this food we were feeding him Fresh Pet, which cost us between $60-$75/week and he wasn’t always thrilled to get it. In addition to the positive changes in his health & appearance, we are saving approximately $25-$30/week making it myself.

I cook a fresh veg assortment in chkn broth - then cook some quinoa in the veggie/chkn broth . . . blend the cooled veg and quinoa and mix with ground chicken. Bake in loaf pans . . then when cooled and firm - slice into individual ziploc (snak-size) bags and freeze. Each day I feed her a thawed one and put a frozen slice into the fridge to thaw for the next day. Before serving I add a crushed cosequin and salmon oil capsule and top with a couple lil chunks of freeze-dried liver and a few drops of CBD oil

Worked in the veterinary world for over 25 years, vets always frowned on homemade and raw diets, I feed my dog homemade for his whole life. Before the nasty dog food industry, dogs ate what humans had left over on the homestead and lived 15 years at least depending on the breed. The pet food industry has costed more health problems in pets than can be imagined! I always felt some of it is to benefit the pet med companies. Your video showed up in my suggestions and I had to watch...I am so glad I did!!! I will definitely be watching more of your great ideas. You know, I got an instant pot as a Christmas gift a few years ago & I wasn't very sold on it. Growing up I caught an ingrained few of pressure cookers from Momma. Whenever she was doing any canning that required using one it had to be done on a Saturday when Daddy could "man the pot". At the time I decided that I had to try to use this. By my age (61) I should be able to follow directions and get past my fears! Long story short it was a disaster! My whole chicken ended up flying in chunks all over my kitchen. I proceeded to thoroughly clean & disinfect the kitchen, wash the instant pot and pack it back in the original box where it still sits today. I got my Angel about 3 years ago from a rescue where she came out of a horrible life of abuse & neglect. It is just heartbreaking to know so many precious furbabies are treated in such an abhorrent environment! She has a host of mental and physical problems. As expected, she has many problems that we will be working through continually. Two of the biggest issues are a skin condition and a very sensitive tummy. I have always wondered if I could make homemade food for her. I know I could never afford to buy food like that (I'm a disabled widow) but do think I could make it, even if I only start with doing so as a partial diet to combine along with purchased food, much like I do when I make her treats on occasion. I think I may even brave trying out my instant pot again...Angel is worth me trying to conquer my fears! I truly believe making her food will help her tummy troubles far better than any food I have ever bought. I can not begin to thank you for this video & recipe as well as others I am sure I will find as I look back at other previous ones. I'm sure Angel will thank you as well!

I used to make my own dog food and supplemented it with dry kibble in case there was something I missed. I used to source whatever I could get from a local abattoir which would be beef heart, bones or offal. In addition I used whatever vegetables was in season and first cooked the bones to make a broth and then added the broth into a stew containing vegetables and other meat sources. You can also cook chicken feet in either the instapot or a slow-cooker and strain that broth that can be frozen and added to the dog food later.

Go to the supermarket, and ask for some empty plastic buckets.. they get them with frosting etc. and they have two sizes. They're food safe, lightweight, and more manageable than a 5-gal. bucket would be; not as deep and narrow, for one thing, and easier to wash. Plus free.
