Buying Story
Guitar players are always on the lookout for an opportunity to expand upon their guitar collection. I was looking for a new acoustic guitar on a budget. I could not spend more than a thousand dollars.
That said, purchasing a guitar is purchasing something special, and at a $600 price point, you have a lot of really good options available to you. A piece of advice, because this is going to be used quite a bit, whatever you choose has to be something that you love. So spend the time researching and playing as many acoustic guitars you can get your hands on before making your decision.
If this is your first time buying an acoustic guitar, going into a guitar store for the first time it can be intimidating. There are so many options!
The Martin Dreadnought Junior jumped to the top of my list quickly after playing a few guitars I had in mind, from doing my own research, going into the store. It was easier to hold it was a bit smaller than the full size acoustics I was playing, and to me, without a significantly noticeable difference in the fullness of the sound projected by the guitar.
What I also noticed that was special about the Martin guitar brand is the craftsmanship involved in production. The Martin Dreadnought Junior is extremely well put together, and for me, it is really satisfying to appreciate the time and effort that Martin devoted to the finer details.
Overall, for me, the Martin Dreadnought Junior was the best option I found in terms of sound and playability at a max price point of $1000. And I was actually pleasantly surprised that the cost of this acoustic guitar actually came in under my budget at $600.
This is the complete package for a price point. I use it around campfire, or for when I am chilling out on the patio. I do play it quite often out of my Fender acoustic amp (here: • Plugging In and Fallin... ), which allows me to play a little louder.

The thing about these “Travel Guitars” are that they quickly become our “Primary Guitars”. They sound, play, and feel great. As I’ve gotten older, the 23.5” scale length feels better, and much easier to play.

I bought a baby Taylor for my daughter and I ended up playing it all the time 😂. It was just so easy to grab and play while lounging in the recliner. Thank you for sharing your story, and sorry to hear about the house fire. The GS Mini is a great guitar also, hard to pick between the two in all fairness. Playing back to back, for the play style I have, the Martin simply had a nicer warm, and deeper bass tone that was surprising in such a small body. Thanks for watching!

I own three other full size Martins of different models and vintages. I originally bought a DJR 10 as a guitar I could leave at work for lunchtime playing and for travelling, but has become my most played guitar due to it's comfort. It doesn't have the sound of my other guitars, but is pretty good for a small guitar, far better sound than other similar guitars I tried including Taylor. I am able to play it for hours in comfort. I also was able to improve the sound by installing a bone saddle and Authentic 2.0 PB strings. I wasn't a big fan of the Retro strings that were on it. The build quality is excellent. Great addition to my collection of Martins.

That's awesome! I did something similar, but I quickly realized the lack of humidity in my office when I left it sitting out overnight :/ Yeah, I swapped the strings out pretty quick, tried the acoustic Elixir's, not so bad. Thanks for the feedback capohd28!
@capohd28
@capohd28 3 жыл бұрын
@@WhyBuy One thing related to this is this guitar should be more resistant to low humidity. The richlite fingerboard and bridge shouldn't shrink like ebony, there is more reinforcement under the neck extension and the smaller body should be less prone to cracking. This is one reason this guitar gets played more than the others. I don't worry about keeping it in its case in my dry house so is always ready to play. It's lower value is part of that thinking as well.

Yeah, I've always had the 1 11/16" necks until I got a reimagined D-41 not long ago. Took awhile to get used to it after decades of playing a thinner neck, but once I got used to it, I barely notice the difference now, and didn't hesitate getting the DJR 10 as a utility guitar with that wide neck.

Hey Miguel, thanks for the feedback. Strings are definitely up to you depending on play style. I've been trying to see if anyone has taken the jr. out on gigs? Once plugged in can it hold up to the band.
@topdazzle
@topdazzle 2 жыл бұрын
I bought mine for that very reason Tim and yes, once it’s plugged in, it will definitely hold its own with a band as the PA / amp provides the volume, not the guitar itself. I’ll be gigging with mine regularly in a 6 piece punk band. I’ll be playing it at a festival in Poland in July in front of 6,000 people and another the following night to 3,500. It will be the only guitar I’ll be taking with me on the trip. If I were playing an unplugged acoustic set in the corner of a bar, my Martin DSS-17 has it easily beat for volume, tone and projection but that’s a full size dread and 3x the price! Plugged in, there would be no difference between them both as both have Fishman under-saddle piezo pickups installed. Hope this helps - it’s a lovely guitar!!

Truss rod was loose when I got my DRJ 10. Setting the correct relief (about .004") put the action at .095" which is low Martin spec (perfect action for me). There was also lots of room on the saddle for adjustment as well. That being said, action can vary from guitar to guitar. But as with all guitars, a final setup should be done. Most guitar companies leave room for adjustment which usually means slightly high from the factory.

I'm inclined to agree that the sound can be muffled but, after adjusting the action and putting some lighter gauge strings on, it did fix the issue.
