Have you ever felt completely and utterly not listened to? Not being heard is what came to mind when I finally received my stage four colon cancer diagnosis at the age of 45. I was finally old enough to have a colonoscopy and get insurance to pay for it, but I had been struggling with symptoms for years. I went to multiple doctors who performed testing, pointing to other possible causes; Cancer was never something considered or mentioned - at least not to me. A couple months before I had my first colonoscopy, I looked at my doctor and said "I'm scared I have colon cancer". She looked back at me and said "I think you have IBD (Irritable Bowel Disease)", and scheduled a colonoscopy. When I woke up from the procedure, the concern on my doctor's face said everything. She said "You were right, we found something and it's not good." My reaction after having so many doctors not hear me out and listen to me? "I knew it! I knew it!"
This song is a reflection of my struggle before and especially after my diagnosis, when I had to make myself heard and find a second opinion. I found a group of doctors who would become my own personal superhero as they teamed up to help save my life.
This song has helped me power though my own cancer battle and is meant to empower anyone who feels unheard. Take back your power, don't wait like I did, you have it in you to tell others to 'Hear Me Now'.
Love,
Essi
