I'm surprised that they don't have a loop of det cord through the computers, electronic surveillance and imaging equipment as a fail safe and a final trashing of the system after the erase procedure was run. Kind of a final command line that would turn the drone into a quick scrap pile

Personally I believe even the hardware recovery would be challenging if not impossible. The drone was at a pretty high altitude when it was damaged and then nose dived into the sea. There's also the corrosive nature of sea water on computer chips and the like. There would also probably be a fairly wide debris field.

It is the bare minimum that I expect from the US military and intelligence services to design systems that erase sensitive data before it falls into enemy hands. From a programmer's point of view it's not hard to code software or firmware that erases itself once a certain trigger occurs. In the drone's case when it self-detects that it's crashing down from the sky. For example, when the altitude during flight suddenly and abruptly drops and the AI decides that it is due to an attack.

Right. This is basic and should be a more common sense thing. Honestly if they had a self-destruct on board would be more ideal. For situations exactly like this. Would take down the jet trying to bring it down exactly like this. They the military could say well equipment on the drones a very sensitive so hitting them is going to cause the missles to go off. Then I could be like oh shit that's cool military checking all the boxes. About time. Now I feel like I was robbed for a basic drone.

Just get a heavy duty regular drone, and use the propellers to aim for arteries. It's easier to argue in court you lost control of the drone than I didn't weaponize that drone Plus multiple governments are working on small regular drones with shaped charges to attach to helmets/heads and scramble your brain, because it's hard to stop 1000 flies than 1 large condor. Soon a plane or enemy drone like yours could be intercepted by mini drones your scanners aren't designed to detect You are not outcompeting the government funded AI robot swarms

They also start a fire using the standard aircraft decoy flares to burn the componentry of all electronics on board. Then ignite explosive devices to further destroy this part of it. This destroys the airframe ability to fly and causes the crash. There is no flash override, once the destruct sequence is initiated. It can be self initated onboard by the craft if it observed damage to itself and can’t talk to Mama at home.

I very much doubt that's all they did. Modern processors can not only burn EEPROMS (static memory) with programs: they can similarly program addressable programmable gate-arrays - - literally building the peripheral devices around them just prior to booting up their conventional software. Some of these peripherals are standard devices such as I2C,SPI,CANbus or Ethernet interfaces, but many others are custom devices which are the interfaces to Radar devices, the flight control surfaces, the big "gumbal" in the front [camera systems], etc. Such a surveilance aircraft needs to not only erase the software, they need to also destroy all the means by which the processor talks to all the hardware devices connected to it.

I think that's why they didn't care about the actual hardware. I do wonder how long it would take to run a several pass wipe on whatever storage medium it uses, I think it would have to survive a crash in order to have time to finish that process, it's probably running an embedded custom made MS windows platform, XP would be the most stable around the time it was first used in 2001, that or an upgrade to Win 7 embedded, certainly nothing newer than that. Contrary to myth, military hardware is usually decades behind civilian, because stability is the most important factor.
