Hearing loss: Hannah's colorful ears - inclusion as a deaf person with cochlear implant

Hannah, 11, is always on the go. High school in the morning, then homework, modern jazz dance in the afternoon, riding stables, meeting friends, tournaments, music school. Whatever Hannah sets her mind to, she achieves it. But twice a year she has to go to the University Hospital in Dresden - because Hannah has been deaf since birth. Is your workload too big? How does she manage all of this?
The documentary makes it possible to experience the world of a deaf girl. This is reinforced by sound collages that recreate Hannah's hearing. Hannah was implanted at 11 months old. Hearing with cochlear implants is difficult. Because the external microphones on the ear always hear everything at the same time and at the same volume. In the inner ear it sounds very different from how hearing people understand the sounds. For technical reasons, Hannah hears a kind of machine language. It sounds like “croaking” that deaf people constantly have to translate for themselves. This is very strenuous and requires constant cognitive performance from Hannah. The measure of the ability of inner translation is the speaking of the spoken language of the listener. Getting to that point requires extreme endurance, practice and support from parents, doctors and teachers. Not all deaf people can do this. However, Hannah speaks perfectly. And she's not embarrassed about being deaf. She shows and talks openly about her deafness.
With this, Hannah wants to encourage other children to have the confidence to do anything and not give up.
