All of the guys who recorded this album have passed. Gary Rossington left us earlier this year. The last one. I also went to the 1987 reunion show. I saw them several times after. Skynyrd was my favorite band as a teenager. Still rocking out to them! What a shock right?

This song was from Pronounced Lynyrd Skynyrd, the first album. Artemis joined the band for the third album, Nothing Fancy. I saw the Artimus Pyle Band 5 or 6 years ago at a small club. He has a good band.

It is a crash that never in a million years should've happened. They were having engine problems leading up to it with the same plane, and some of the band members didn't want to take that flight until it was fixed. LOTS of controversy surrounding that whole crash and the aftermath. "Free Bird" Live in Oakland was filmed just a few months before the crash. An optimal, and popular, viewing of them playing Live if you want to see them. Amazing crowd and atmosphere!

They ran out if fuel As a lifelong professional pilot I cannot imagine doing that unless several other things go wrong. Primary among them, bad weather. In this case the weather was fine.

This is Southern Rock at its best. Absolutely my favorite band of all time. These guys, and gals, were truly themselves and the music reflects that. They were so versatile as with ballads like this and "Ballad of Curtis Lowe", but then turn around and rock both your socks and nickers off with songs like "Sweet Home Alabama", "Free Bird", "Saturday Night Special", and many others. For a live performance I highly suggest "Free Bird" at Oakland Coliseum in 1977 a few of months before the place crash. There's not enough room to give all the info on them, so please look into them.

Soundtracked my (and all my friends) childhood in San Francisco, California 1972-1977. Two of the Best recorded LS shows are MARCH 1976 (after Ed King quit) at Winterland in S.F. CA. And Oakland Coliseum 7/2/77. Also LS first huge show (Opening for the Who) was at COW PALACE in San Francisco, CA. Imagine that.

I remember the crash well. You want to see one of their live performances you say? Then you will be blown away by, Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird - 7/2/1977 - Oakland Coliseum Stadium (Official). This has been considered one of the number one Rock songs in history. They performed in Oakland less than three months before the plane crash that killed the lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines backing vocalist, Cassie Gaines assistant road manager, and others. The piano player Billy Powell crawled out of the wreckage and heard crying and someone yelling to get him out of there and he went to help get them out. He said he saw the drummer Artimus Pyle crawling out of the wreckage with, "his ribbs sticking out of his chest." Powell had his whole face bashed in and his nose was hanging off the side of his face. ( I saw photo's of his face it was all bloody) He, along with the drummer Artimus Pyle and Road crew member Ken Peden went to look for help and showed up all bloody at a farm house and the residence of the house held them at gunpoint not knowing what was going on. I will leave the rest to you to google and learn about the plane crash and how they all knew it may crash since it had issues before the last flight. The flight before the last one of the engines caught fire and they all was worried about it's airworthiness. So, as you watch the live performance have in the back of your mind that some of the members died less than three months later and some was seriously injured. Other than that. You will be amazed at this video.

Although the 1977 Oakland one seems to be the most popular among reactors, IMO the 1976 Knebworth video of Free Bird is better…by a slim margin, although they are both great. Check it out. Less footage of the crowd and more of the band. And Ronnie pissing off the Stones by sending Collins, and Gaines on to the forbidden tongue part of the stage. 😂

As mentioned the band named themselves as a joke after their gym teacher Leonard Skinner, who often put them in detention. It took him years to realize the connection and once he did he was not happy, but he eventually came to appreciate it and even became friends with the band. Later in life after he retired from teaching he opened up a bar and Skynyrd stopped by once and played .

Simple Man is a great song. I've actually tried to live my life in a way that mama told me. I sure as hell didn't get the rich mans gold. I remember when my big brother brought this album home. We wore that sucker out! I almost posted this on your Patreon, but thought there might be an outside chance of you reacting to it. At the hotel I used to work at there was a story passed down for decades about how Lynyrd Skynyrd were guests and they did an impromptu concert in the lobby. They noticed the grand piano sitting in the corner of the lobby and just started singing and playing, not just a song or two but for a decent amount of time. It would have been so cool to see these rock legends jam out just for fun.

@@DianeJennings there are two Country jam sessions that aren't impromptu but have that fun feel to them: Nitty Gritty Dirt Band - Will the Circle Be Unbroken - It's a who's who of Country stars. In particular, I think you would love a lady named Minnie Pearl. She was very funny and always wore a trademark hat that I think you'd find cute. Hank Williams Jr. - I Saw The Light - It's his dad's original song, so include the Jr. It has most of the same people in this and is again that fun jam band impromptu sing-along style.

I went to their concert in Greenville SC in 1977 the night before the plane crash! When I had my son in 1985 I dedicated this song to him, and on his graduation day also! Their music is a gift that will live on forever!

Song with a timeless message. Probably their most famous live performance is Free Bird. In 1977 they released an album called Street Survivors, three days later the airplane crash occurred, famously the original album cover had the band members engulfed in flames,the label reissued the album with a different cover, the original "flames" cover has become a collectable.

I also have the LP with the flames. I bought it within a day of it coming out and had actually just played it a few times when I heard about the crash. IMO the best live version of Free Bird on video is the 1976 Knebworth one where they opened for the Stones. Not as much time spent videoing the audience as the Oakland one. Also Ronnie defying the Stone’s orders to stay off of the tongue part of the stage and sending Collins, Gaines and Rossington out there. The version(s) from the One More From the Road Deluxe CD recorded live at the Fox in Atlanta are pretty great too. There’s a great documentary about the band and the plane crash called If I Leave Here Tomorrow which actually comes with the Live at Knebworth Blu-ray/CD. The rest of that concert as well as Free Bird is great too!

Johnnie Van Zandt, Ronnie's younger brother, took over as the lead singer when the band reformed in the late eighties. They are still on tour today. They were one of two of the greatest Southern Rock Bands of all time along with the Allman Brothers. They have a long list of hits and I saw them live in 2006 near Seattle, Washington with my two sons. They rocked the house down!

Skynyrd is from Jacksonville, FL (Where I'm from!) and were the epitome of what's now known as Southern Rock. They named the band after their high school gym teacher (Leonard Skinner - from Lee High where my grandfather went). Jacksonville and south Georgia were the heart and soul of Southern Rock! Glad to see you enjoying it!! There's a monument at the site of the plane crash... it was a huge loss for Southern Rock and American Rock. You should check out Freebird (Live at the Oakland Coliseum) and Sweet Home Alabama, next, and also look into the Allman Brothers Band, The Outlaws, Marshall Tucker Band, etc!

The word tragedy gets thrown around a lot today and is so overused, but it really is tragic that Ronnie Van Zandt died so young. He was a brilliant songwriter, capable of telling a musical story in such a unique way. It really is sad to think about how many other tunes he could have blessed us with in all these past years. I would add the loss of Steve Gaines was also a tragedy as he wrote and co-wrote almost all of Street Survivors and sang co-vocals on You've Got That Right. He was an unrealized talent that had so much potential. Ronnie will always be a Legend, Steve was just getting started.

I remember very clearly the morning after that plane crash. My classmates and I, all second year aviation students in college, heard the news of the crash as we arrived for our 7:00am class. We were all stunned and shocked. Skynyrd ("Skinert") had just recently become a power band with a national following. From the release of "Second Helping" in 1974, their fan base grew rapidly and we all listened to their music by the time of the crash. A very sad morning indeed.

The lead singer Ronnie Van Zant's brother, before taking over as lead singer of LS had a solo tribute song to his older brother called, JOHNNY VAN ZANT: "Brickyard Road" It always gets me. Especially the line, "I swore i saw a Free Bird fly. Ridin' the winds of a Southern sky."

Great reaction! Skynyrd was one of the best Southern Rock bands of the 70s. If you want a live performance, Free Bird from several months before the plane crash is excellent. One of my favorite songs by them is Call Me The Breeze, but they had lots of bangers.

My brother lived with tropical whale hunters on a small island in Indonesia. When he said he was from Alabama, they started singing "Sweet Home, Alabama!" I think there are people from outside the USA who can name California and Alabama, if no other states, because of that song. It really seems to be known worldwide.

By far, the best live song from Lynyrd Skynyrd to see is "Freebird" live @ the Oakland Coliseum from 1977. This was recorded just a few months before the plane crash.

I grew up down the road from Allen Collins who was one of their guitarists. If you want to see a great documentary on the band, check out If I Leave Here Tomorrow. Jacksonville was a really small town back when they came around, and it's amazing to me that you could have that many world class musicians from such a area. They are a legendary band with a bunch of incredible songs.

Skynard had three guitar front-men. Each would play lead, or rhythm depending on the song and sometimes would switch roles throughout the song. All were outstanding and unfortunately are all no longer with us. The piano player, bass player and drummer were top notch and of course, the lead singer and backup singers.

Free Bird and Sweet Home Alabama are definitive classics, but I've always been a fan of their song, Call Me The Breeze. Especially the live version at Knebworth 76. Growing up in the Southeast - I actually lived in Gainesville, Florida many years ago, it felt like "one of ours" made it. They sounded like my cousins and aunts and uncles. They were poor like me, came from simple, proud families, etc. Sad, sad day when they crashed. The second version of the band was OK, but no Ronnie, no Skynyrd. He was not what the media tried to make him, but really a product of the awesome hippie era, mixed with Southern rednecks who hated hippies - it used to be dangerous to hitchhike alone!! If you want a feel for how these guys can rock, check out "Gimme Three Steps", "What's Your Name", and of course "Free Bird". And if you like this kind of music, I might also suggest the Marshall Tucker Band, and The Allman Brothers (who are more blues. But I don't remember if you've reacted to them before). Rossington and Collins formed their own band called "The Rossington/Collins Band" which did fairly well into the 80's and before reforming Skynyrd.

I really only know them from "Sweet Home Alabama", but I did like the melody and lyrics for this song. I will have to go check out some of their other songs. And the plane crash was such a terrible accident. I went on reading a bit more and learned that the flight was going to be the last in that plane, because the band was going to get a new one after the LSU concert.

As others have suggested, there are some other LS songs that you ought to introduce yourself to, these include: "Tuesday's Gone" "Saturday Night Special" "Gimme Three Steps" "What's Your Name" "Sweet Home Alabama" and of course "Free Bird" which evolved into a frequent request among drunken concertgoers. But this tribute to Duane Allman is one of the most durable classic-rock songs ever recorded. Like "Simple Man" and "Tuesday's Gone" from the same album, "Free Bird" is slow and meditative song until its not - becoming a driving power force of a song.

Charlie Daniel's would be another great group to listen to. The song "The Devil Went Down to Georgia." I do like this song. I think it speaks to being who you are and not who others want you to be (which would complicate things). Obviously, somethings need changing, like narcissism or something. But otherwise, just be you. The poor letter "y." It must be very confusing to sometimes be a consonant and other times be a vowel.

Diane, as someone who came from this generation of music, I find it refreshing to see you enjoying it. In the 70s and into the 80s there was a "southern rock" movement that consisted of bands like Lynard Skynyrd , 38 special, molly hatchet, and others, it was a mix of rock, blues, and country. One I may suggest is the Jeff Healey band that encapsulated all of these.

Regarding the plane crash, exactly one month to the day before it happened, the band, Aerosmith was supposed to be onboard that same airplane to begin their tour. If I remember it right, Brad Whitford's dad, a former Navy pilot went to Dallas' Love Field Airport to inspect the plane. He was going to be one of the pilots for his son's band. After seeing the condition of the plane with multiple oil leaks, he promptly refused to fly it and warned the band against taking it. So the record company pushed it onto Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Moving out of a troubled home at 13 growing up in New York. When I heard this song, I join the army at 16 and met the love of my life in Germany,She was nine teen and I was 20 and was still married. And I had all my kids and grandkids listen to this song whether it helps or not I don’t know. Love your videos

They were a terrific and very popular band in the 70's. And yes, the triple guitar with multiple lead parts played simultaneously was their trademark. Free Bird would be the place to go to hear that, though Sweet Home Alabama was the song that broke them through. It was a song that, as one band member said (Ronnie?), 'Ether it will be a big hit or it will piss people off so bad that we don't get a second chance." It was a big hit. I was in my 'work week" of Navy basic training in the chow hall in 1977 when our supervisor told us the sad news. We were all just stunned.
