Interesting points about doubling up on hearing protection. Yes there's more exposure indoors, but the high amplitide impulses are effectively the same. It is advisable to wear double protection whenever you are shooting a number of shots. The reduction of a rifle shot by 30 or 35 dB still leaves you in the 130 to 140 dB range.
@rottdad7752 жыл бұрын
34db reduction from the Amps combined with a suppressor dropping that down to 135-140db before it even hits the muffs 🤌👌
@williammurphy82272 жыл бұрын
Here are a couple of articles about firearms measured outdoors and firearm suppressors also measured outdoors. The peak sound pressure levels range from 140 to about 175 dB SPL. The suppressed peak levels ranged from 120 to 151 dB peak SPL. With the suppressor, the levels are sufficiently high that hearing protection should still be worn. I only taking a few shots, single protection w/o suppression may be acceptable. If firing more than a few shots, for instance at a firing range, then double protection would be advisable. These electronic muffs should all provide about the peak reduction indicated by the NRR. Safety glasses will affect the performance significantly, 8 to 15 dB less, depending upon the size of the leak introduced by the temples pieces of the glasses under the muff cushion. NIOSH recommends wearing dual protection when firing weapons. Electronic and moderately attenuating earplug. (I no longer work for NIOSH, so this is just my opinion) www.soldiermod.com/volume-11/pdfs/articles/honeywell.pdf asa.scitation.org/doi/pdf/10.1121/2.0001132

Thank you for this video, not enough on utube reminds the “youth” of the danger and seriousness of hearing damage. I always doubled up and I never imagine a nightmare called tinnitus that started in midlife. Hearing loss is culmative. Shooting, motorcycles etc. you won’t notice it at 20,30,or40 unless you do something stupid. Hearing loss is PAINFUL. If you have chronic tinnitus your life will never be the same again. It can render you useless as you adjust to living with it. 24/7, 7 days a week it rings. Some days are so bad you will need a fan on all the time and a dark room. People KILL themselves. Never shoot indoors, even when you double up. You are absorbing alll the rounds in there, limit your time to 15-20 minutes then get out. There is no cure for tinnitus. Doctors are clueless If you already suffer from depression, anxiety, or ptsd, it is a serious condition that I believe leads to a lot of veteran suicides. I am active with a tinnitus counselor and I have counseled others. . In the last 4 yrs I’ve spent 10K plus on out of pocket medical.

I’m 45 and have had tinnitus since I was 19. It’s actually very easy to damage your hearing. In the 90’s adults never warned anyone about the dangers. Between hunting, concerts, sporting events, bars, headphone use, ect. it takes a toll.

Just FYI - Peltor have a "tactical" headband that is made to be more comfortable under a helmet and is almost identical to the band of the MSA headset. I've used it for years and it is phenomenal and significantly more comfortable than a typical headband when wearing a helmet. You can get the Sordin comfort with the Peltor protection.

@Vince Nav With a high cut you lose a lot of side coverage, which can make a difference if you are around fragmentation hazards. Also a lot of guys are wearing ballistic mandibles these days (also due to the frag) which ride very similarly to a full cut. IMO high cuts are good when you are prioritizing stop and listen, such as a scout role or LE, while full cuts are better if you are actually expecting to fight.

Question for the experienced users here: Why are headsets so much more expensive than just regular active ear pro? I'm comparing the Sordin Supreme MIL AUX and the Sordin Supreme MIL CC for example. Only difference is the CC has a built-in boom mic, but costs 300 bucks more where I live, so almost double than the AUX. Why is this? What's so special about that boom mic to make it worth 300 bucks? What would be the downside of using the AUX and getting a PTT system with a built-in mic and connecting the headset via AUX cable?
@pasiblafield94042 жыл бұрын
Sordin Supreme MIL range is MIL-certified, it has double speakers (where hunting products have single only) and thus the communication works independently safely even if battery is so low that level dependant functions no longer work, the electronics is fully protected permanently by dipping (as a standard feature whereas such military grade protection is often only available by special request by other brands), each single piece delivered is individually tested etc. etc. Sordin MIL is practically as hardcore and reliable as a product can be. Just fantastic stuff.
@Jewifer333x2 Жыл бұрын
The electronics that allow comms and the mic are expensive to make or some nonsense. I think these companies are just charging assloads because they can. Before the civillian market for headsets was huge the average headset cost was like $600 for peltors and now they're double that.

EQUALIZER (decibel) RANGE capability is what you are describing. It's the same as any pro audio gear: the cheaper the parts and design, the more minimal the eq capability of the hardware is. As a sound engineer, I like that the peltors have an individual R/L eq level finder. Most people's ears have different eq damage levels, so that's a cool feature*
@angelaorr39924 жыл бұрын

$900 for those isn’t unreasonable for the “best” quality for a professional headset for real situation use. It’s fine to get a $50 headset for going to the range on weekends but if your job consists of shooting things for a living or you just shoot multiple thousand rounds per month, it’s worth it. Sound clarity and comfort is key when it comes to expensive audio equipment. Bose makes the A20 Aviation headset that virtually all professional pilots use, they are about $1,100. But they are the best at what hey do, cancel noise while being extremely comfortable for use all day.

Love that you did this review! This has me wanting to pick up a pair of AMPs. You may or may not be familiar with them since they're ancient, but before Peltors and Sordins, Gentex had Wolf Ears back in the 80s and 90s. They were huge, but something that has continually pissed me off is their directional sound reproduction and pass-through sound quality is an order of magnitude better than Sordins and Peltors despite being ancient (I still have my 1030As from back then). The AMP sounds like Gentex might have given audio reproduction the Wolf Ears treatment. I need a pair...

Got a pair of MSA Sordin Pro (neck band) with gel cups standard that I've worn everyday for three years at an Amazon fulfillment center. Mine last 600 hours on average (yes 600 running on low volume), go through new ear cups (hygiene kits) every year. Wear them everyday for 10 hours each day and can confirm the noise pickup issue. You get used to it but situational awareness takes a hit. Often doing double takes on what is being said under conveyor whine, pallets crashing, and jacks clanking along.
