It may be petty, or overly critical of me, but I always appreciate when someone mentions Chinchilla's voice instead of her nails when they first hear her. Great reaction, man.

I agree, and I was pleasantly surprised and happy that he didn't say anything. With every reaction to "Chalk Outlines" I watch I immediately start to cringe when the camera pans over to Chinchilla because 99.9% of the time someone makes a comment about her nails without ever acknowledging the raw beauty and talent of her vocals.

LIKEWISE. Especially since her voice is really something! And together they have that “ Blood Harmony “- which explains why they refer to each other as like brother and sister.

To me, the meaning behind chalk outlines is the fact that they feel lifeless on the medications they have to take to get through a normal day. Such an incredibly written song. The live version will always be my favorite ❤️. Thanks for the amazing reaction!

It works both ways: when things get better, you have to leave a chalk outline of yourself behind (being afraid of change, even if it's for the better, which is referenced in the song, too). There's also the "little by little, bit by bit", where you feel like you're nothing more but a husk (an outline of a person), so brittle and washed out, that you may as well be an outline. Little by little, though, you start filling the outline out with colour. Chalk outlines are the past and the future, and what you leave behind of the present

Yes, he makes reference to it in 'Sick Boi' when she pushes the pills on him and mentions 'you'll feel worse when the side effects will show,' and he mentions 'derealization,' the meds make things unreal, he talks about it in 'Diazepam' which was one of the medications he was given by doctors who misdiagnosed him, and he got a bit addicted, and like he says here 'I hope I'm someone else in the morning.' He ended up between the pills and the Lyme infection with hallucinations and thinking if this was his life and he wouldn't live much longer whether it was worth it, you see that in 'Suic*de.'

Even in his slower, more meaningful songs REN manages to sneak in some word play. The line "bury myself with a great big smile" is a double. It means smiling to hide what is actually going in your life, but it also means that the choice of not reaching out for help is literally killing you. You are burying yourself by hiding what is happening.

Yup, engineers have to align every line into perfect time and also a pinch of autotune if considered off!!! These so called flaws in pitch and time actually make a fuller sound and more emphasis with timing. Studios can't help themselves.

Chinchilla is an absolute force of nature. If Ren is all of our brother, Chinchilla is all of our sister. She has some absolutely fantastic solo work you should check out too! She just released a new single as a newly minted independent artist after leaving her label. She writes and produces all her stuff as well. That new single, Little Girl Gone, is an absolute anthem and is going viral now. But also, there is a live performance on KZbin of her song Fingers for HungerTV that is arguably the most incredible live performance I’ve ever seen. Her vocals and emotionality will blow you away!
@StephenJacob

I came here to say this. "Little Girl Gone" is one heck of a song. She released a lyric video first. The full on music video drops tomorrow. Chinchilla's "Fingers" (live version for Hunger TV, as Anna says--the music video is really good, but the live version is superlative) is /magnificent/. So very worth it. Ren and Chinchilla singing "How to Be Me", a song by Ren, is hauntingly beautiful (have the tissues ready for this one). You should definitely listen to all three of the above. :)

Hearing the isolated vocals makes me realise they could have done the whole thing without the guitar and it would still have felt musical. Hope someone gave you a hug after this reaction though! Ren cuts deeep. They're both such incredible live performers. They have another song together that is equally powerful, How to be Me, which Ren wrote about his best friend whose darkness swallowed him. It's recorded live again. Chinchilla's song Fingers (live for hungerTV version) really showcases what she can do with her voice.

Great way to describe it. I also feel like it's like there's nothing between the lines, it's negative space. From experience A lot of depression meds will make you feel like you're just a shell and faking a smile. Take one for a while and feel better for a while then up the dose or switch meds. Eventually you don't know who you are anymore, you feel empty. Erase ourselves in these chalk outlines

Ren and Chinchilla with this song tear me apart. I have watched so many reactions moving to see people discover this song. But I have to tell you that I think your reaction here is my favorite. It matches emotionally to the song. I'm not sure how to say it but your ability to connect and such a real and honest way was this moving as the song itself. You think you reminded me of how many man I've been around that don't have the ability to connect that way with their own emotions much less anyone elses. It can be difficult to be so empathetic at times... That's how I am.... But I would much rather be that way and not. Be you and thank you for sharing your insight. Hearing this the vocal stripped out like that this very interesting. By now you've probably heard it a hundred times but I believe you're on the right track with the chalk outlines meaning. Like a crime scene where they draw a chalk outline around the dead body. When they take the body away the outline is there still for the investigation. The song to me then says they are just an outline of themselves and dead on the inside. Drawing our own chalk antlions. Phew. Powerful stuff. Like I heard someone else say here.... I hope you got to have a big hug from someone after that. That's the process. Thank you for letting us inside as well. No one IRL where I am seems to get it. ❤

@@musicplayeralan Everyone is so different. Reactors AND their audiences. Nothing will be perfect for all. But I would rather see a reactor err on the side of actually "feeling" the music and experienceing it than just a stoic listen and analysis thing (which there are many). Also, just a lot of folks who want to do this (they think) and don't connect at all. Anyway.... your way of stopping to kind of compose a sec and then at the same time plugging in a clip from after the song where you talk about how that part made you feel and other info of that music/lyric/video segment had been .. then going on with the original seemed a very good way to show the emotional impact yet keep on the path at the same time. Not sure that makes sense but I can tell you I will be back for more AND I have not yet but will check out your original music as well. Know that in the half year I have been watching reactors that will be a first. I haven't intentionally avoided it .. I have just not been sufficiently compelled to until now. Good work sir.

The general idea I believe behind the chalk outline reference: Anti-depressants typically make you feel numb. You don't feel as bad as you did, but you definitely dont feel happier...just numb. The lack of emotion makes you almost feel dead in a way. That is what I take from it. Also, just want to say, I really appreciate the way you feel the music. Very real & very honest. Your vulnerability is beautiful.

Right on. It always makes me smile when I see music hitting people the way it hits me. It's like "Where you been?"

Dude. Watching you get emotional listening to this tells me so much about you. It was very emotional watching you listen to this very amazing song. I JUST recently discovered Ren and I can’t get enough. His songs are so beautiful, his voice spot on. And well, I already love Chinchilla, so what a pair. This is the best reaction I’ve seen to a song from anyone in a long time. 🫶🏽🫶🏽🫶🏽

With you every tear of the way. I musta watched this twenty times, alone and with reactors, and every time it's the same. You can't get past this song intact.

Love your isolation of their voices and als your humanity. Yes, How to be Me is even more chilling. For another look at CHINCHILLA see her live version of Fingers. You'll be blown away at her vocal control and emotion.

I’ve watched at least a hundred reactions to Ren so far. Rating from the least technical to the most. Yours is the closest to my own reaction - somewhere in the middle. The power, the passion, the sound, the acoustics, the lyrics, the chemistry, the moment…. your reaction is all the stuff I want to say to others when I share it. ❤❤❤❤❤

Absolutely love your reactions. It's so refreshing to see someone who isn't afraid to be vulnerable. Music affects me so deeply, I always have an emotional reaction and sometimes think there's something wrong with me. Thank you for making me feel normal.

If you look at the body of his work... You'd be pressed to find someone who has more control over their vocals. The timber and rise of his voice, couple with how expressive he is... Truly unique, and truly a once in a generation talent.

I loved this reaction! I've seen so many different people react to this. Many/most of them get emotional as it is an emotional song, but you're the first ive saw get emotional about JUST the music with the lyrics not resonating so much, or not being the main focus, i should say. I really like that. It's like listening to a beautiful song in a different language. If its done correctly, you dont need the words to get the soul of the song, they just help. 'Now we are free' from Gladiator does the same thing to me. Very cool, dude.
