Hearing Sounds in Your Walls or Attic? This is Probably what it is!

In this video, Josh Erdman, owner of Erdye's Pest Control, shares what causes the 3 most common sounds coming from walls or attics. 95 Percent of the time, people hear a mouse or mice scratching in the walls. The rest of the time, it is normally other rodents, like chipmunks, squirrels, or raccoons. If there is a squeaking noise with some scratching, then it's bats.

After moving back to the country after 16 years away, there was a sound like something walking in the attic in the early hours of the morning… accompanied by they sound of crows cawing - it was crows on the roof hopping around while warming themselves in the morning sun. I'm glad I'm not superstitious. :)

It’s usually at 1 o’clock in the morning. Outside my window I hear scraping on the wall as if it’s trying to remove the bricks in order to come in. It lasts an hour and I could not sleep. I looked in the morning outside, but could see no evidence of scraping. Or crunching noise. We have a bench outside and nothing on that. Going to call pest control to have a check. We have a pipe that runs from outside the house up into the roof. They could be crawling in that it is just so darn irritating.😊

I just moved into a new apartment and have been hearing something scurrying around in my walls and cieling ( I don't have an attic). Just a few minutes ago, I saw a chipmunk go into a small, mostly hidden drain pipe behind the drain from the gutters. So now I'm convinced it's a chipmunk. It's super active, though. We hear him starting early and throughout the day, just running back and forth. Gathering nuts, I assume. I'm hoping it's that chipmunk and not a big rat anyway.

Is it possible to have both Squirrels and Mouse behind walls and ceiling at the same time or no? Wouldn't the Squirrel prey on and attack the mouse or would they just coexist? Meaning it would always have to be one or the other behind your walls.

mine just started the other morning..it was around 6am just before sun up and it only lasted a few mins..it was too rhythmic to be the tree limbs brushing the house,,,happened two mornings in a row now and only lasts a couple mins..sounds like a scratching or digging like possibly readying a nest for sleep....not sure if its on the roof or in the wall or attic..its the corner of the ceiling in my bedroom ..dont hear it any other time of day or night..only those few mins around 6am ...there was a mouse in the basement room last week..caught and released so i know its possibly mice cuz its getting colder now...my attic has a lot of stuff up there and its low ceiling to be able to get over to that area....im sure there are plenty of tiny entry points around the house for mice...bought some steel wool but wondered what kind of caulking or stuff to use to cover it..to keep mice from pushing it out ...there are some cracks and places they could get in...any advice would be appreciated

We live in the SE in a rural area. Deep woods on two sides of us. Something sounds like it’s flipping around in my attic making knocking sounds….usually a single knock…or two flipping sounds as if you flipped your hand over quickly on a wooden coffee table. It starts around 11:00 at night and goes on all night, off and on. I hear it in the morning too, but by lunchtime, the sounds are gone. Always seems to be in the corners of the room, or where the outside wall meets the ceiling…..hard to get to those areas in the attic without crawling almost on your belly to go all the way out to the edge inside the attic. I’ve been up there with strong lights at night and cannot see a thing. A squirrel would typically come in at dusk and leave in the early morning, so I don’t think it’s a squirrel since it starts late and goes on all night. We have: put out dog proof rat poison in one area only of the attic…after 6 months about a third of the one block is gone; pest control put poison in one container in the crawl space basement…it’s usually eaten in a little and they put in fresh bait every 3 months; we have set rat traps (peanut butter bait) and sticky traps in the attic….one trap went off but did not catch anything. We have set up several sizes of “Have a Heart” traps in the yard with bait but have only caught one squirrel and a opossum after many months. Could it be flying squirrels, which are nocturnal? If so, how do we get rid of them? Going nuts with no sleep.

Could be "Deathwatch beetle"? Seems like similar experience we had many years ago. It took several years for me to figure it out, when I described the sound to pest control experts they just looked at me strange. You can look up how they sound like on KZbin. You said near "where the outside wall meets the ceiling" (the eaves of the roof) - just like my case. That is a typical location in attics where there is moisture build up, often due to the ice dam syndrome and lack of ventilation. Another common source for moisture in attics is air leakage from the house (warm, moist air) into the attic space, (through even tiny gaps in ceiling, light fixtures especially where the ceiling drywall meets the wall drywall on an exterior wall). I bring up moisture because these beetles infest wood but only wood that is not dry or rotting. If you have a dry, ventilated and fresh attic with no rotting wood these beetles can not survive there. Maybe my guess here is wrong, either way, best of luck to you.

There's one more, if you hear scratching like their coming thru the walls, ceiling and floor, but also trifold sets of 3 knock repeats, don't call pest control they won't be able to get rid of it.

We don't have squirrels in my country. There was no scratch or sound of big animal or bats. Just a dry repeating knock sound. We found a 1.5 inch gap so we put hot chili repellent. The sound decreased and now it is gone. There was No sound of something crawling or running. When we were renovating, we found lizard eggs so I thought maybe it could be a lizard but it is still a mystery. The lizard has sticky feet so it does not make any sound.

bats are not the only thing that squeaks. A vole got in once and I was so concerned it was a bat until I found it. I know they don't infest homes, but still it got in and it sounded like a bat. I almost called a family member and told him to help me find this bat cause i was afraid of rabies. I finally found it and it was a vole hiding behind an armour.

Raccoon!! Had the same thing happen.. We found a mama and babies in our ceiling! Raccoons are nocturnal which explains the noises you hear at night. Mama coons will nest in a high space that is dry, warm, secluded, quiet and safe to raise their babies. They are commonly found in attics and ceilings. They are VERY protective and vicious mothers though so be careful if you plan on inspecting by yourself. I wanted to add that squirrels are not nocturnal, they are active during the day and early moring hours so its prob not a squirrel . Being that you hear noises at night it's more likely to be a raccoon or bats.. or something nocturnal.

Never a snapping cracking sound? My furnace makes a fast snapping when it runs. Probably expansion joints but there is another similar sound when it's not running that is semi-irregular unless the expansion joints are always working throughout the entire night even when it doesn't seem there are no temperature changes going on.

The guys says mice or rats don't squeak. That's not true because I hear them at times and I know I've got a rodent problem as I've seen them and hear them gnawing the walls especially at night. I've set poison bait out with peanut butter cause they don't seem to go for bait on its own and I've heard they like peanut butter. I think I've got some of them - dead - but then more come. Have to find out how to stop them come getting under the house. It's going to be a challenge for sure.

Hi. There's some sort of smell where I live it smells like a stenchy/stale smell. And I don't know what it is. the apartment maintenance person said that they could send out pest control, and I don't know if it would help, but I've got to start somewhere. I'm outside the Seattle and wonder if anybody have any recommendations for somebody that could come out and look? (Non-toxic eco-friendly, I have a chemical injury) There are firewalls here and it smells like it might be coming from there? They make this cheap little pipe camera. I use it to see if the mice left their hole. So if your scared you can use that. 😊. I stand on a chair while I do it. I kind of feel bad for the mice. One time I threw a feather light collandar to catch one. It didn’t work. He squeaked . He was upset. I felt terrible. My moms house has an INSANE amount of mice, so she hired pest control, and they use sticky traps. I think it’s really inhumane, but unfortunately, it was the only thing that worked. The next morning my mom had eight dead mice jam together on this huge sheet of sticky board. I had a water front condo that I lived in during Hurricane Katrina. Right on the Hudson river. Snakes came up through the drains and mice filled the walls of the hallway as if it were a highway, and they could get into anyone’s unit from behind the oven. Then I put a sticky trap down for ants. But there was this one little mouse that would come occasionally at night, and I stupidly named him. And then he ran on the sticky ant trap.

Bats are actually dangerious. Not so much the bat itself but the bugs they come with. Bat bugs that are almost as bad as bed bugs!

@@linzkll i have a slow chewing noise in my room. I have tried to follow the sound but i can't pin point if it's in my walls ceiling or under my floor. I just killed a big black ant in my house so now I'm thinking it's Carpenter ants and you can hear them chewing wood ( louder than you'd think) look up carpenter ant chewing noise on youtube. If it's mice you should see mouse poop around possible food sources.

My attic noise started a few hours ago & sounds like a motor running, intermittently. I think it must be my A/C, although i finally shut it off for the season 2 weeks ago & not using the heater yet- it is still 85 degrees here.

@@NarcanTam someone told me to not worry about it. It's just a geologic thing, it's when earth. You know the underground? Have a little earthquake or smth. We don't feel it but it affects the buildings somehow. Sorry for my English but I hope you got me.. + it's been a year now, do you still hear it?

So mine sounds like literally if someone would push a couch from one place to an other. I also hear scratches and sometimes knocking. But the couch dragging/pushing sound is really really loud and it almost sounds like the wind is blowing really hard outside

I heard scratch in my walls so I got closer to hear exactly where it was and i started growling at it like a dog and it seemed to scare it and I haven’t heard it since 👍🏻

Back in the seventies, I had to get up at 6.30 every morning for work, and one morning while having breakfast, there was a loud tapping at the window (it scared the heck out of me)… thankfully I was brave enough to open the curtains and have a look… there was a magpie pecking around the window frame (I assumed eating little insects). The knocking on the window never bothered me again after that. :)

What if I hear tapping on my window or window frame by my bed at only night time, I thought it was rain but it was very weird it would have 1 hard tap and like then 20 seconds later it would happen again then repeat
