Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is becoming more common as a diagnosis. Once thought as diastolic dysfunction, HFpEF is a unique condition related to elevated pressures in the heart.

My mother was diagnosed with HFpEF in late 2021, and had a atrial shunt put in 3 months ago. Since the shunt, the pressure in her heart has reduced by 50%. She has changed her eating habits (eating tones of vegetables, and cutting back salt) and has upped her exercise (walking, walking, and more walking). I will continue to keep everyone updated on her condition.

Update: My mother is doing amazing since having the new atrial shunt put in! Sleeping several hours at night, something she has not been able to do in years due to coughing all night (did not know it was due to heart failure). Her energy levels shot up (she was not able to walk far before, or even push a grocery cart). She has no more pressure in her chest (something that she felt constantly before the shunt).

Great to hear she's doing better. How is she doing now? I'm 21 and I have precursors to developing this - it's very worrying and I'm trying to learn more. Would really appreciate an update.

My echocardiogram showed “preserved EF with no significant valvular disease. Had this for the last 3 years. I does not state outright that I have congestive heart failure. I do have Mobitz II second degree heart block with marked bradycardia. I have a dual channel pacemaker for 3 years. I had hypertension off and on for 54 years treated and controlled and history of hypothyroidism in control via thyroid medication. I am 76 year old female Do what actually does the “preserved EF “ mean

How is mid range EF treated clinically? EF 40-49%. Is it treated as HFpEF?

It's classified as HFmrEF. Mildy reduced EF

I have recently been diagnosed with this after I changed my Dr. When I complained to my previous Dr if being breathless and tired I was told to take a vitamin tablet. My new Dr sent me for an echocardiogram and then to a cardiologist.

The doc says that the patients are in their 7th, 8th decade of life... I'm 37 as of last week and was just diagnosed with HFpEF. I see the cardiologist for the first time since the diagnosis in two months. My GP told me to "live life normally" because the typical patient is so many years my senior. I asked him directly about my chances of survival past 5 years and he seemed evasive, never truly answering my question. The paltry amount of literature concerning HFpEF in younger populations gives no indication of what to expect. The uncertainty is worse than the bouts of dyspnea. But I suppose it's unimportant when you couple it with pulmonary disease. Not much hope with that double whammy. It's just sort of crazy to think that there is basically nothing out there save for some young diabetic patients with HFpEF. C'est la mort I suppose
