Chris Squire.....unique sounding bass man. A young girl, who was very keen on me at the time, gave me this album for my 17th birthday in 1972 . I remain eternally grateful to you Judith L. My wife (not the same lady) and I have a secret anchorage for our old sailing boat in Greece (sorry, we will not be posting its location). I named it Roger Dean bay because it's often such a mystical place and somehow Dean's visions and Heart of the Sunrise run almost constantly through my imagination when we're there. Mind blowing stuff!

I just saw Jon Anderson (the singer) last night perform with about 15 high school musicians who are in the paul Green School Of Rock. That was what the movie school of rock was based on. It was really cool to see all these teens perform and become fans of Yes/Jon Anderson and get the opportunity to do a mini tour with him. They did Heart of the Sunrise. Yes are going on tour again and have a new album coming out, though Jon anderson isn't with them and Chris squire died about 6 years ago.

He did a concert with a group called Todmobile. They did what I consider to be the best live performance of _Awaken_ (except for the keyboardist). The thing that really enhanced the performance was the addition of a live choir, and other instrumentation. It's not a full orchestra, just enough to "fill in the gaps" and make it much closer to the album sound. I'm not a fan of full orchestrations in general because they rarely make the orchestra "hard" enough. It's sad, because orchestras can *really* rock. Think of _Mars_. The fight in Rachmaninoff's _Romeo_and_Juliet_, Ravel's ballets, etc. We also saw a solo performance, just him, a bunch of instruments, songs and stories. IMO, he was the heart of Yes.

Why the editing? This is late 1970 & their first with Wakeman in keys. Seems less comments from the unfamiliar Reactor. Wish he'd given more input rather than him interviewing the one who was already familiar with it. And there are so many more great Prog even less popular or known besides the usual suspects. Genesis is key based BTW. RUSH is not even in the same league. I always hate any association to YES & other great 70s Prog. (just a personal note)

Rick tells a funny story about this. They worked on this during his audition (and something else, IIR). Rick didn't drive, so Steve gave him a ride home and said, "pick you up tomorrow?" "OK." Cool job offer. Yes are prog even among prog bands. IMO, it's rock music composed with classical (and other) styles and idea. Songs have multiple sections, with many moods, variations on themes, recapitulation. While they are virtuosos, it is their compositional ability that put them on the top. I think a lot of it may be due to Jon Anderson not being a trained musician, so he didn't know what he should *not* be doing. There are cover & tribute bands that recreate their songs note for note. But none of them can put the notes in the perfect places like they do. ~Music lives in the spaces between the notes~ -- Debussy (paraphrased) "The time between the notes relates the color to the scene." -- Jon Anderson.

Awesome song from a awesome timeless band! About Chris Squire bass tones, he used to put the treble knob up and do a picking technique using both pick and thumb to get some harmonic enhancing. Oh, and some distortion as well, also tremolo sometimes, etc. A genius. Rock in Peace. Kudos to both!

At about 5:00 it is stated about prog rock bands, "it was the early 2000's and none of them existed anymore". No single statement about the state of prog in the early 2000's could have been further from the the truth. Starting in the mid 90's, and continuing pretty much unabated since, there has been pretty much a steady stream of world class prog bands from all over the world. Anglagard (Sweden) Echolyn (USA) D.F.A. (Italy) Deus ex Machina (Italy) NeBeLNeST (France) Thinking Plague (USA) Univers Zero (Belgium) Miriordor (Montreal) Cabezas de Cera (Mexico) Pain of Salvation (Sweden) I could go on for pages...

@@thomasrichmond2413 Who is this comment aimed at? If it was me, of course I am a huge fan (of all eras) of king Crimson. I was just pointing out to the video creators, that during the time he states that there were no prog bands in the early 2000's, is far from the truth. The fact is, that there is (since the mid 90's) a very creative progressive music scene, with bands that rival the bands of the 70's. Also, why the mention of Mellotron? The Mellotron is not in any way necessary to how progressive a band is.

Nice reaction. Yes always the best band for me. I think you don’t need to skip songs that don’t have copyright issues like most yes songs, it breaks the flow. I feel it’s safer to stop and rewind a couple of seconds if you prefer. ELP are my second favorite band. Yes just released a new song with a lot of personnel changes, worth to check up: the ice bridge. From nowadays music my favorite one is an all-girl Japanese band called Band-Maid, check any song, they shine mostly live, maybe their song Domination, official live video, their composition process is very interesting. Take a look. Thx. 👍

Anything from The Yes Album all the way through Going For the One. Really pretty much anything '71 to '77. As far as how we consumed this, it was exclusively by the album start to finish. And live. And yes they were amazing live. Close to the Edge is an absolute masterpiece, and my all time favorite song, anybody, any time, any genre, is Awaken, the last track on Going For the One.

I agree this is a good place to start, but I'd choose next, "Close to the Edge" and then "Awakening". Both are the most extreme and yet will lay a good "Yes" foundation. Most that I've heard listen to "Close to the Edge" or Awaken, are most impacted by the depth that Yes can inspire. Most say they will never listen to music the same after those listenings; plus I believe Wakeman is in the band during those songs. Wakeman definitely inspired. Jon Anderson's voice was used more like an instrument. Of course the deep lyrics were thought provoking, but his voice was used more like an instrument. Also, my understanding is some of the songs were created and then learned after for touring . Created meaning, the sections were cut into tape strips and then pieced together; Close to the Edge was almost thrown away by the cleaning lady during a late night session. I saw Yes live in Lakeland, Florida during the Fragile LP release.

As I said, they were always willing to explore several ideas (often all at once). That's one of the things that made them great. However, they did have an incredible ability to pull back and rely just on strong melodies, like the "Soon" section of Gate of Delirium for example. They excelled at both. :)
