Heart's Nancy Wilson on Captain Marvel and Touring with Queen
With Marvel Studios’ Captain Marvel now available on Blu-ray and digital platforms, I recently sat down with Nancy Wilson from the band Heart to talk about what it meant having a song and the band’s t-shirt in the movie. During the interview, she talked about how they got involved in the film, how the movie almost used two songs, what she thought about the film, and more. In addition, early in her career, Heart went on tour as Queen’s opening act and she shared some cool, behind-the-scenes stories, about the band and Freddie mercury. She also shared her thoughts on Bohemian Rhapsody and Rami Malek’s performance.
As most of you already know, Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson stars as Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel, and at the start of the film, she’s a Kree warrior fighting with a Special Forces-like group known as Star Force in the Kree-Skrull War. She doesn’t remember her human past but ultimately, winds up crash landing back on Earth where she runs into MCU mainstay Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) where they team up. The film also stars Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, Djimon Hounsou, Annette Bening, Clark Gregg, Lee Pace, Gemma Chan, Lashana Lynch, and Mckenna Grace.

Nancy is such a queen! Great guitar player, great singer, rocks on stage, I love her! Heart is awesome and Ann and Nancy harmonies are some of the finest vocals you'll ever find in Rock.

During the 80s I wrote a letter to the heart fan club and was sent an treasure of a souvenir an actual previous heart concert, wear around your neck, backstage pass!!! - later in 1999/2000, Ann & Nancy played at the magestic theatre and I decided to wear the backstage pass to the concert, after a bringing heaven down rocking incredible performance by these two amazingly talented artist , I couldn't bring myself to leave after the show was over, unbeknownst to me a small group of about 6 people were forming a line to get to go backstage to Meet Ann & Nancy and noticed they were all wearing backstage passes very similar to mine, when all of a sudden they began motioning to come and join them mistaking me and my expired backstage pass for an online contest winner named Chris!!! I remember managing to twist the cord on the backstage pass so that only the back showed, and nobody bothered to check too closely, because the next I knew I was being led backstage to meet my idols !!! It was everything to have that experience and one of the highlights of my life for sure, they really appreciate their fans and are so gracious and kind - have a photo of myself with Ann & Nancy Wilson from that night when a dream came true & luck came from an expired heart concert backstage pass!!! ✌️❤️😍

I saw Heart and Joan Jett (And the Blackhearts) on tour August 7th earlier this year (2019). Heart is my favorite band and when I found that my second favorite band (Joan Jett and The Blackhearts) were also playing... I about died. The Wilson sisters are the biggest inspirations to me as a young musician at 16. And being able to see them live is such an honor. Heart is a legendary band and will live on compared to the pop and hip-hop type genres that are so overly played these days. I don't hate that stuff but it doesn't have the same emotional background that classic rock and roll has. It's just empty words and repetitive melodys (in my opinion). But overall... I think that Heart (Ann and Nancy in particular) have changed my world in such a positive way. LONG LIVE ROCK AND ROLL!!!

It's awesome to see someone look so vibrant 45 years after I became a fan. They were playing tracks from Dreamboat Annie in Canada in 1975, before they really exploded in the US. This (then) 9 year old was paying attention! Their Greatest Hits/Live double album is one of my treasured vinyl records. It's because of Heart that I discovered Aaron Neville's music. The Lovemongers was a great EP too! And their collaboration with John Paul Jones is one of my favourite live albums of the 90s.
