I like to post older original copies of rolls. But this is a great song, and since I already posted my other Al Bowlly hits, I might as well include this one - even tho it's a newer copy. It's another one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy Heartaches - most people don't!

As much as I love Al Bowlleys version, with the “Hearrrrtacheeess, heaaaarrrtachheees..” I really like these ones that go more like “Heart. Aches. .. Heart. Aches.”

I originally listened to the Caretaker's stuff roughly a few years ago. Lead me down this rabbit hole. I lovvvve this version of Al Bowlly's Heartaches. Has a upbeat style to it, even though its supposed to tell a story of heart break.

Listening to The Caretaker can lead to two paths. Becoming obsessed with psychology and memory, or becoming obsessed with 20’s ballroom music. I chose to simultaneously go down both, and now I listen to a hundred song playlist consisting entirely of variations of Heartaches and Lullaby of the Leaves while also doing research on the scientific explanations of brain functions.

Conforme la canción avanzaba, el pianista comenzaba a morir y olvidar poco a poco lo que era, lo que le gustaba y lo que quería. Y tan pronto como la última nota sonó, el último recuerdo que tenía con su amada se desvaneció para siempre.

1:52 didn't expect an ending like a Steven Universe song (there's a complicated term for this sort of Coda that refers to this jazz like chording style of ending///jazz only in refrence to the style of harmony, taken inspiration from the blues chord system, not jazz rhythm wise)

This is a very nice version of this song, and thank you for sharing. However my personal favorite roll arrangement of it is by (the equally great) Rudy Erlebach, and was issued on the "Paramount" roll label in the early 1930s. All Paramount rolls are rare due to having both great arrangements (usually) and also being punched on very cheap, high-acid-content paper, almost like newsprint paper! (part of this was due to rationing in the Great Depression when most Paramount rolls were made). This means a lot of those rolls got destroyed and thrown out from being 'played to death', so it is important to scan all the remaining ones. I first heard that version of "Heartaches" on a Cracker Barrel LP "Original Player Piano Roll Gems" issued probably in the 1960s/70s (they issued probably over a dozen LPs in this series which mostly have identical cover art, making them hard to tell apart). My friend Augie has a copy of this rare roll, and we're hoping to get it scanned soon. If you want a recut of it to play on your piano, let me know.

@KawhackitaRag
@KawhackitaRag Ай бұрын
At the end of the roll, the operator needs to manually shift the transmission lever from 'play' to 'rewind'. This shifts the transmission over to rewind the roll quickly, and also activates a big valve called the 'action cutoff' which almost always is on the lower unit of the player action (the one below the keyboard with the exhauster and reservoir bellows etc). This cutoff cuts off the suction to the piano stack, so it doesn't try to play the roll backwards (really fast). There is also another valve called the 'wind motor accelerator' that dumps full suction to the wind motor, bypassing the graduated slot for the tempo control. Automatic player pianos (those that were originally electric, such as expression and reproducing pianos for the home; and coin pianos and orchestrions for public places) have a special dedicated hole for 'rewind' on the roll which comes up and automatically shifts the piano into rewind without an operator. They also have either another hole for 'play' (when the roll is done rewinding), or else a special mechanical device that senses when the roll has fully rewound, and shifts it back. Also, many old home foot pumped player pianos have been 'electrified' with a suction box added, and many of those electrifications also have another pneumatic added for rewind, tubed to the suction supply and then activated by one of the topmost or bottom most note holes on the roll (rarely played by most rolls; most '88 note' piano rolls stick to a compass of about 82 notes, C-A, with some rare exceptions, so as to cause minimal interference when played on reproducing pianos which repurpose the outermost holes for other functions). QRS and some other makers often punched several of the topmost and bottommost note holes together at the end of each roll (starting in the 1920s) so that it would hopefully trip the automatic rewind function on various expression and reproducing piano scales. The suction box, rewind pneumatic, and a metal 'tongue' in the spoolbox (to shut the piano off), were often sold bundled together as a 'kit' (via mail order) by various player piano parts suppliers (like "Player Piano Co." of Wichita, now defunct), from the 1960s onward, as retrofits that could be installed. Most player piano purists cringe at aftermarket-electrified (originally foot-pumped) instruments, since they usually have no added expression units to play any special rolls (unlike original expression and reproducing pianos) and basically just bang/grind out a tune at one volume when they're operating (a properly restored foot pumped player piano can be played with a lot of expression by judicious pedaling and use of the expression levers, giving a musical effect much like a reproducing piano).

Yes it was commercially released and nationally distributed like other QRS rolls of this song, so it is indeed an 'official' version. You've got to understand that the pop music industry of the old days wasn't *quite* like today (although there are modern updated versions / continuances of it, for example Max Martin and Britney Spears): while a hit song may have been associated first with one or two famous artists, all pop songs were considered fair game for everyone to 'cover', without accusation of 'plagiarism' (which is when you steal part of a song more or less note-for-note, but fob it off as a 'different' song without giving the composers credit / royalties, and quite different from a legit 'cover'), or without much public griping about 'cover versions' (which was not even a legit gripe in those days, since for the most part, most composers/lyricists did NOT perform, at least as singers (special 'songwriter showcase' vaudeville acts excepted); and most famous pop singers did NOT write their own material. That was pretty much the norm for popular music (usually, covering OTHER PEOPLE'S tunes) up until the advent of The Beatles. Once in a great while an artist came along who was both an exceptional performer AND composer, but in those days they were the exception to the rule. There was a 'division of labor' in those days, where the composers and the performers were mostly separate, and many performers could (and did) 'cover' a composers' song, without shame (and the composer loved it so long as the performer didn't mangle the tune, and the composer(s)/lyricst(s) got the proper credit and royalties; this was however mainly up to the sheet music PUBLISHER / copyright holder, to whom the composer was/is beholden).
