Ellie - I have to pass the story on to you and I hope I do not offend any of your readers I don't mean to. My parents were living with me in Texas for seven years I took care of my mom who had lung cancer. My mom was a clean freak and I was not as clean as she was. I was on the road Monday through Friday so Saturday morning was my chance to sleep in and clean the house & do laundry & pack up again for Sunday night travel. One Saturday morning after I got done vacuuming my mom who used to play bingo, had placed a bingo chip under the TV stand. After I announced I was done vacuuming my mom said I did not clean underneath the TV stand when she pointed out the bingo chip. I told my mom that I thought she wanted to be cremated so I did not want to clean up too much, I wanted to make her feel at home. We both looked at each other and started laughing. My mom said to me "I am with you physically now laughing but there will be a day You will not see me laughing but know that I am with you always". Two years after my mom had passed and I was moving from Texas to Michigan, after the movers took away the TV stand, there sat on the floor a bingo chip. I picked it up in my hand looked at the ceiling and said mom you are right, YOU will always be with me. I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers and know that your aunt is always with you in spirit.

Ellie and Jared My baby cousin who was only 1 month old passed away. he was 4 months premature. he was so lucky to live as long as he did. God was certainly on our side. He was also the only male cousin I had. They are all with heavenly father and not suffering any longer.

I lost my mum to cancer November 2016 then a month later my dad was diagnosed with cancer. luckily he had an operation and all is well. Its a really difficult thing to go through but a positive attitude really helps. I was pregnant when my mum died so I didn't really grieve her because I thought I had to be strong for my baby but since giving birth in January its all I think about. Ellie, your aunt's story reminds me so much of my aunt's story, who also passed away from Stage 4 colon cancer almost 5 years ago. She is my mom's sister and they were unbelievably close and I saw her just about every single day because she lived right down the street. I get through the grief by thinking of how kind and loving she was towards me and my sisters and remembering all of the amazing times we had together. Prayers for you and your family!

Your story touched me on so many levels. As a woman who was unable to have children of my own I have poured out my heart into my precious nieces and nephew. I too had wonderful role models that taught me just how special an Aunt can be. Four years ago I battled breast cancer. Shaving my head was very emotional for me and my younger brother didn't want me to be the only bald one in the family so he shaved his head too. Two years later my sister would be diagnosed with breast cancer and just last year my mom also battled it. The three of us live with the knowledge that it could come back at any time. It's hard on our family. I hope that when God calls me home I will have impacted my nieces and nephew as much as your Aunt Sonja impacted you. 🙏🏼

So sorry for your loss. My aunt passed away in 03 from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) and when her disease hit the point where everything was starting to spiral downward, she helped plan her funeral too and I think it was a blessing for her, like for your aunt. There was a sense of peace knowing that the preparations were made and that after she passed, while we were all grieving, it would be one less thing we'd have to think about. She was the ultimate caretaker and her wanting to plan her funeral, wanting to make sure the arrangements were done and taken care of was like her final act of taking care of her family and it really was a beautiful thing, looking back on it.

I lost my favourite Aunt from Lung cancer 17 years ago and just recently lost my favourite Uncle to Cancer in December and both my Grandpa and his sister passed away from Cancer, I miss them terribly, they were all the life of the party in my family, but it gives me peace knowing that they are no longer in pain. Ellie, I'm so sorry for your loss. I know the pain of grief and there's nothing anyone can really say to help with the pain. I just lost my dad 2 days after Christmas this year unexpectedly. He battled 4 days in the ICU after a pulmonary embolism, heart attack, and stroke. I just turned 18 and never expected anything like this to happen, I always thought everything in my life would turn out ok, but I was wrong. Something that helps me is not thinking about the days prior when he was sick. I think about my last day with him. Although sedated this whole time, while going through dialysis he moved his head, eyes, and nose slightly. Then he squeezed my hand. I knew he was there and listening to me. To me, those last hand squeezes are something I will never forget. The love of my dad will always be a reminder to me as the love your aunt had should for you. Use her wisdom and strength to help you through this trying time. I'm so sorry once again, and I will be praying for you.

I could not relate more! My favorite aunt passed away from cancer last January and I don't feel like anyone understands the bond an aunt and niece can have. She was my second mother and I grew up and lived with her every summer. She was so young both in spirit and age. I really hope that you will cherish the happy moments and memories you have of her. Time will help and heal, maybe not completely but it will. Know that she will always be with you in spirit! I was very close to her and I miss her more than you can imagine. I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom last year in October, two days before my birthday, from cancer. She had battled it for a while, and we were told it was gone. We were very happy and celebrated, but several months later it returned with a vengeance and started to spread. It was very hard to be at the hospital when her organs started to fail and wait for her to pass. She wasn't concious for that time either, but I still talked with her. I wanted for so long, 11 years to be exact, to have a baby with no luck of getting pregnant. I remember asking her a few weeks before she passed, even though I knew the answer, "Would you and dad be happy if Chris and me got pregnant?" She replied, "Of course we would." 2 months after she passed, I found out that I was pregnant. I truly believe it was a gift from mom some how. Today I am 14 weeks and 6 days. I will love my baby, just like my mom loved me.

I relate to this situation so much, my aunt passed away almost 2yrs ago from colon cancer & it was exactly the same story as your family. I miss her every day but through this journey my family has gotten so much closer and I've learned to appreciate everything just a little bit more.😌🙏🏽☝🏽

My mom died 6 weeks ago of colon/rectal cancer.(4 weeks after being diagnosed with stage 4) It's so awful. I'm LDS too and I'm so glad to have my faith. I'm sorry for your loss too!!!

Sorry for your loss 💜 my grandma was diagnosed with terminal bowel cancer in August last year and passed away in November was so hard when there's nothing you can do and have to see them suffer.

I'm so sorry Ellie. I feel your pain. My grandpa recently passed away from stage 4 cancer. He had many type of cancers through his entire body. He was diagnosed last June and lived till this January. I miss him so much and feel bad for you guys. You will be in our prayers. love you guys!!❤

It was really hard to plan my dads funeral while he was still with us, but it most definitely helped us to make it special and exactly the way he wanted. I'm so sorry for your loss! I had an aunt, aunt Elizaberh, who was similar to yours. She was single, just as I am. But going to her and doing things with her made me (and my siblings) feel very special. Every visit to her was a little party! And she took us serious and listened to us. She is my example! Here we are a year and a half later and he's still here 💓 I feel so blessed and thankful. My grandmother died on her birthday. It was so sad and the thing is that I saw it happen. It's was the most scariest thing I have ever saw happen to someone I loved. I miss her so much she was only 81 too. My dad also died. I'm so sad. I know how it feels to lose someone you love. 😪
