Pressure Washing Then Soft Washing A Block Paved Driveway, Cambridge.
It's been a while since i've posted, so welcome back to my channel. This was a driveway job I carried out for an elderly couple recently. As the title says, this job had a heartbreaking story behind it.
As anyone in the UK knows, at the moment, times are hard for a lot of people, due to the cost of living crisis, and a lot of people are struggling.
This couple are both in their late seventies, both recovering from illness, and living off their modest state pensions. The appearance of their driveway understandably, was much less of a priority while they were ill.
Being quite a proud couple, and the appearance of their home being very important, the weeds and growth starting to infest their driveway was becoming a real concern for them. So decided to get a few quotes. Much to their dismay, all the quotes they received were much more than they could afford, including my own.
Being the last business to quote, and after hearing about their recent run of bad luck from illness, on top of the current crisis. I offered to clean their driveway for free.
This was rejected by both of them, as they both said that they always want to pay their way regardless of how tough things get.
When chatting with the husband previously, he mentioned that even though he had struggled with illness and mobility, he had still managed to get outside to his back garden, to tend to his considerable and impressive fruit & vegetable plot, something I could tell he was passionate about, as his eyes lit up every time he talked about it.
So I suggested that instead of a monetary payment, they pay me in fruit and veg, but only as much as they could spare.
This was accepted. They were happy, as it didn't cost them anything, but were still contributing significantly to the upkeep of myself and my family.
It was a good trade, I am also more than happy, the fruit and veg is completely organic, and delicious at the same time, yum 🍓🍑🍒🌶🥒😋

First of all, after watching the work you do, lazy is not a term that I would ever use to describe you. Second, if you hadn't told me about the brickwork, I would have not known. I always figured there was a reason, just not what the reason was. Thank you for teaching us. This was a beautiful job. Thanks for sharing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The people who make the kiln sand need to think about it in colors...red, black, and grey. Red-dyed sand would look really good on this driveway. American here, so not sure if that was not a good idea or not. Also, with the cost of organic fruits and veggies, this was a sweet deal!! 🍏🍓🍅

O.K. Am worried as you water-can the weed killer, pretty certain a mist is attaching to your legs & being absorbed into your shoes. Boots might be a suggestion & rinse thoroughly before putting into work van 😊. Am loving the brick driveways in your country-very posh looking especially after you have worked your magic. Thank you for you explanation on brick work and possibly damaging the mortar. I would NEVER call you or others lazy for not doing that too! I admire good old fashioned HARD WORK and this looks back breaking! I am BEAT when I wash my small driveway! No resending done, I love the look of these driveways, the beautiful stones and pavers, it would be full of nasty moss in a week here in rainy Washington State! 😢 I would call this a courtyard, could never drive on it 😅

As soon as you started cleaning, a lovely, elaborate pattern layout began appearing. A pretty, lost view restored. Thanks for explaining that the structure of brickwork, as of a house, does not behave the same as paving and has to have alternate care. I was puzzling over where the functional drain was. So you had a lot of sludge and drain trouble. That is one job that really showed just how dirty it can be and the difference by the time you go through all the steps to create "clean". Nice work getting rid of the encroaching Black Spot. What a great design you uncovered in all this.

it's good to see you at least washing down the sand after it's applied to get it down between the pavers. When pavers are installed a vibrating plate (compactor) is used to lock them down and fill all the voids with sand. I've often wondered why cleaners don't do that again.

When pavers are installed, it's essential to use a wacker plate to make sure the sand completely fills the empty joints all the way down to the base of the block, as you mentioned. But it's not necessary to use a wacker plate after cleaning, as the cleaning process only removes the 1st inch of sand from the joints, most of the sand is still in there, so simply brushing that top inch of sand back in is all that's needed.
