1999 was one of the best years in film. Supporting Actor that year was anyone's guess but it went to the veteran actor (Michael Caine). Just look at the category - all of these performances (chef's kiss - even Tom lol): Michael Caine ( The Cider House Rules) *WINNER* Tom Cruise (Magnolia) Michael Clarke Duncan (The Green Mile) Jude Law (The Talented Mr. Ripley) Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense)

Late Michael Clarke Duncan aka Big Mike was like his character, John Coffey, gentle giant according to his friends and family. After movie, Armageddon with Bruce Willis, Bruce Willis suggested Big Mike for the role as John Coffey. When he died suddenly from a heart attack in 2012. Tom Hanks eulogized Big Mike at his funeral.

I honestly live in fear of my chosen family going before me. I have two best friends and sometimes we will be having a great time, hanging out, and I’ll just think, “One of us will go first….and one of us will be the last one left.” It’s the most realistic punishment I can fathom. You say, “In Hell little minions will poke out your eyes with hot pokers.” That sounds bad and makes me cringe, but I can’t really IMAGINE it. But tell me I have to watch all the people I’ve found and love so well in this lonely world… that I have to watch them die and keep going so long without them….. THAT I can imagine and it’s haunting.

@Apollo890 3 жыл бұрын
It's based on the Story of Casca Rufio Longinus the Roman Legionary who drove his Pillum into the side of Christ on the Cross to make sure he was dead and end his suffering. The story is that he converted to Christianity and that he has never died and will not die until the second coming of Christ. He has also supposedly been a soldier in many different armies for many different nations, kingdoms and empires throughout the centuries because on the cross Christ looked at him and said "Soldier you are content with what you are".
@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx 3 жыл бұрын
It has to be assumed that Paul is a Catholic and fears suicide as a solution will damn him even further in the eyes of God. Because John Coffey's death implies that ending his life by violence is possible. Also John was indeed correct - Del was the lucky one to be dead and spared the pain of living as Paul now suffers.

Interesting movie fact: The actor who played the warden had tried basically all day to cry during the meeting in the office in order to show how much he loved his wife and the news of her pending death was supposed to devastate him. But, no matter how many times they tried to film the scene, he simply couldn't get to that point emotionally. HOWEVER, the scene in the bedroom, without any time to prepare or get himself in an emotional state, the tears just came flowing freely due to the fact that he felt such a connection to the actors and knew that this was going to be his last scene being filmed. Ironically, most people don't notice that the tears are real because of how he felt and yet because they ARE real tears over having to leave the movie, they actually make his part in that scene hold more of an emotional impact than anything that was actually scripted. That is why he becomes somewhat "silent" during the end of the scene because at that point they had pretty much cut out the rest of his lines because they felt they no longer needed him to actually SAY anything to get the point across. And it works.

Paul told his wife that he and the guards couldn't stop the execution, neither could the Warden. She told Paul not to tell the Warden that he knew John was innocent so he wouldn't[' have to bear the burden of knowing he had executed an innocent man. The Governor of the state could have stopped it, but he wouldn't have believed their story had they told him. Part of the lesson in the story was to show that most guards had some compassion for the prisoners they executed, even those who were guilty. The electric chair is no longer used because they often had to do it more than once. Even executions as bad as Dell's were known to happened, though not very often.

@@philipglenn7995 I stand corrected though most states have stopped using it and the gas chamber. I don't remember the last time I heard of it being used. I can't see how anyone could actually choose it for execution. Firing squads is also an option in some states.

A movie that always makes me sad and cry as an older man then you three. That part of my enter self is like my mother. Viki and Lia you two always get to me. We have the same kind of hearts. It is a very good movie. Always remember life is music, music is life. “We each owe a death. There are no exceptions.” It is a debt we all must pay. Listen to your hearts, For GOD, Mother and Country. I would love to watch a movie like this one with you all someday.

John Coffey character was inspired to a kid who was executed in USA, he was the youngest executed person ever, he was 14 and innocent, his only sin was that he was black. His name was George Stinney Jr, if u googled him u can find his story.

Woke up my dad he came in my room and saw me crying watching the TV .... He just sat down next to me. Just so you know I cried with you girls.

Coming from the book, there's a very strong implication that Wharton actually has a similar power to John Coffey. But while Coffey's power is to absorb negative energy and release positive energy to those he cares about, Wharton's power is to feed off positive energy and inflict havoc back on anyone around him. It could explain why he only becomes lightheaded and faints after direct physical contact with John, as their powers are clashing against one another. It also explains how Wharton knew the moment Del was being killed, even before the lights went bright, and why he delighted in the act while John was hurt.

I thought that too because when he touched John he wasn't hurt by it and somewhat wanted him to know it was him plus John struggled a bit John Coffey was created by God Will Wharton waas created by Satan

Nice. 👍 Nice rounding out that part of the movie. That part never made sense to me,( not that it in ANY way detracted from the ultra-excellence of the film), but now with that piece of the puzzle in place, this story takes on an even GREATER depth of wonderment for me. Thanks for that. 👍

A beautiful reaction for a beautiful movie. I saw this in theaters with my father when it was first released and every emotion you girls experienced was the same for us. This film truly touches the heart in so many ways. A true masterpiece. Glad you finally got around to watching it. If you're looking for a couple of films that are more heartwarming instead of heartbreaking then watch the Academy Award winning "Rain Man" (1988) and another great Tom Hanks film called "The Terminal" (2004). You'll love them both.
