It's based on the Story of Casca Rufio Longinus the Roman Legionary who drove his Pillum into the side of Christ on the Cross to make sure he was dead and end his suffering. The story is that he converted to Christianity and that he has never died and will not die until the second coming of Christ. He has also supposedly been a soldier in many different armies for many different nations, kingdoms and empires throughout the centuries because on the cross Christ looked at him and said "Soldier you are content with what you are".

It has to be assumed that Paul is a Catholic and fears suicide as a solution will damn him even further in the eyes of God. Interesting movie fact: The actor who played the warden had tried basically all day to cry during the meeting in the office in order to show how much he loved his wife and the news of her pending death was supposed to devastate him. But, no matter how many times they tried to film the scene, he simply couldn't get to that point emotionally. HOWEVER, the scene in the bedroom, without any time to prepare or get himself in an emotional state, the tears just came flowing freely due to the fact that he felt such a connection to the actors and knew that this was going to be his last scene being filmed. Ironically, most people don't notice that the tears are real because of how he felt and yet because they ARE real tears over having to leave the movie, they actually make his part in that scene hold more of an emotional impact than anything that was actually scripted. That is why he becomes somewhat "silent" during the end of the scene because at that point they had pretty much cut out the rest of his lines because they felt they no longer needed him to actually SAY anything to get the point across. And it works.

Paul told his wife that he and the guards couldn't stop the execution, neither could the Warden. She told Paul not to tell the Warden that he knew John was innocent so he wouldn't[' have to bear the burden of knowing he had executed an innocent man. The Governor of the state could have stopped it, but he wouldn't have believed their story had they told him. Part of the lesson in the story was to show that most guards had some compassion for the prisoners they executed, even those who were guilty. The electric chair is no longer used because they often had to do it more than once. Even executions as bad as Dell's were known to happened, though not very often.

☺️ I was 10 years old when I first saw this movie back in 2000. I was up late at night I wasn't supposed to be I had school the next day. When his death came I cried my heart out. Woke up my dad he came in my room and saw me crying watching the TV .... He just sat down next to me. Just so you know I cried with you girls.

Coming from the book, there's a very strong implication that Wharton actually has a similar power to John Coffey. But while Coffey's power is to absorb negative energy and release positive energy to those he cares about, Wharton's power is to feed off positive energy and inflict havoc back on anyone around him. It could explain why he only becomes lightheaded and faints after direct physical contact with John, as their powers are clashing against one another. It also explains how Wharton knew the moment Del was being killed, even before the lights went bright, and why he delighted in the act while John was hurt.

I thought that too because when he touched John he wasn't hurt by it and somewhat wanted him to know it was him plus John struggled a bit John Coffey was created by God Will Wharton waas created by Satan

Nice. 👍 Nice rounding out that part of the movie. That part never made sense to me,( not that it in ANY way detracted from the ultra-excellence of the film), but now with that piece of the puzzle in place, this story takes on an even GREATER depth of wonderment for me. Thanks for that. 👍

We lost a wonderful actor.....His first movie was Green Mile. Such emotion, such professionalism, he was a loss when he died. Too early.

Think about this, Steven King wrote this movie, Shawshank Redemption, The Shinng, Carrie, The Mist, Firestarter, The Stand and Creed show. For me he is the only living writer that will be up there with the greatest writers of all time.

A beautiful reaction for a beautiful movie. I saw this in theaters with my father when it was first released and every emotion you girls experienced was the same for us. This film truly touches the heart in so many ways. A true masterpiece. Glad you finally got around to watching it. If you're looking for a couple of films that are more heartwarming instead of heartbreaking then watch the Academy Award winning "Rain Man" (1988) and another great Tom Hanks film called "The Terminal" (2004). You'll love them both.

I cried 4 times watching this part of the reaction. Another very “emotionally charged” film , that I love, is 1991’s Fried Green Tomatoes starring Kathy Bates. It will make you laugh, as well as cry.

You ladies are just wonderful. Seeing people be so vulnerable on camera is special. I feel for you guys and I feel for the characters in this film. I have a feeling that this movie will be a classic for more than the duration of our life. Im only 27 now, but I know that future generations will love this movie

When John blew out death and illness..blackness came out. When he "left" the shower of lights behind Tom Hanks was symbolic of John making the transformation....darkness to light.

This is probably my favorite movie of all time. Seeing how emotional you all were while watching was something special. John Coffey was one of the greatest characters ever in a movie….truly moving. He was an angel on earth I think. Thank you for your reaction.

Great reaction. One of the few movies that makes me cry every time I watch it. A lot make me cry, but not after multiple viewings like this one. Another consistent one for me is "The Pursuit of Happiness" which I highly recommend.
