Looks good in its new home, Lyn. As you know I do like to remove all the old mix any new plant is in, I don’t think I could have left all the coir on it lol. But it’s good we all have different methods etc, and I’ll be interested to see how the roots grow out into the new mix. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Lyn. Morning Lyn,and THANKS for a repot vid on this lovely looking Cactus. Both getting and gathering information from friends And experience is always important, as we need to make a good On site assessment when looking after our lovely plants. In this situation the plant looked both happy and healthy in The substrate it was in. getting good light and the right amount water and food Is a constant observation and dedication. I think overall I would have done the same as you,remove All the lose substrate but leave the substrate that was holding And binding the fibrous roots. Well done and thanks again to you both in the emerald isle And have a great day,Bill.

That cactus looks like strong roots, I'm sure it will break through the coir into your gritty mix in no time 😄 I too like to remove as much soil as possible during repotting from store bought plants etc, but I think I would have left all the coir too, because way too much roots would come away, it could have exhausted it. Great job and sometimes each cactus needs approaching differently sometimes even if it goes against what we usually do - its really such a nice looking cactus and this way it won't get too much transplant shock... and wow to see another flower bud on your other cactus too 🥳🌵🌞😀

Cuddly, indeed!!! Love em! 😆 Coco coir is very great, mix it with 10% natural top soil (for molybdenum), 25% pearlite, 10% sand, and then dress it with a base micro and macro, like Ironite lawn fertalizer. This keeps them healthy for years at a time! Thank you for another great video!!! Many blessings and much Plant power!!

Looking at the video, I could tell that this is not the coir that is commonly sold as a soil additive. This is the fiber from the husk. This stuff is usually sold for making into doormats and brushes. The fibers have become intertwined with the roots so well that removing the fibers will damage the roots. You are right about using coir in potting mixes. I use it in all my plants. I don't have a good source of topsoil (In UK, they call it loam, in the US, we call it topsoil.), so I add in worm castings, and a little gypsum and greensand. It is expensive, but I find pumice is better than perlite. I screen my sand to remove any particles smaller than 1/32 inch, as these tiny particles do not contribute to drainage. Coir works better for desert plants whose best culture has the soil dry out thoroughly. When peat dries out, it becomes waterproof. Coir absorbs water, no matter how dry it is, even when compressed into bricks.

@@emmitstewart1921 My top soil grows wild cacti well, and is already loaded with calcitic lyme, so gypsum is the only thing I don't use here. Peat is only good for tomatoes and flowers, and requieres too much lyme buffering to bring it up to par even for these... Great info. and thank you for the reply.

@@QuailCanyonAnthropolgy Your topsoil is what I am trying to approximate when I add gypsum to my potting mix. So many cacti grow on calcium rich soils like yours. That is why tomato food works so well for cacti. It supplies the calcium that so many potting mixes do not.

As an experiment I kept two cacti in the peat moss they were already in from the store and they’re doing absolutely fine. Actually they’re thriving. The peat moss dries out quickly because it’s so fluffy and light. It drains quickly. I fertilize with a nice tomato fertilizer and they are lovely peanut cacti.

Nice one Lyn 🙂 Just looked it up, says in times of drought you can cut off limbs to feed to your cows 😁 I'll bear that in mind 😄😄
@emmitstewart1921
@emmitstewart1921 Жыл бұрын
I never heard that one, but when I was about seven years old, I read a book about cowboys which said that in such a drought, they feed their cattle prickly pear pads. What they would do was to build a fire and pass the pads through the flames to burn off the glochids and spines. I've read verification of this several times over the years. I do know that Mexicans cook and eat prickly pear pads. I can get them canned in a local store that has a Mexican food section. They pare off the thorns with a knife, then cut them into strips.

Oh no I am so sorry to hear that you have lost so many cacti, thats heartbreaking, I am so very sorry for you, its so sad when we lose plants, and gutting that the heating broke down, maybe you could slowly replace the cacti with very cold hardy cacti like some of the Opuntias and Echinopsis and Gymnocalycium varieties, that can survive very low temps and you dont need to worry about heating them over Winter, I really hope that over time you will be able to start collecting again, thanks so much for watching and your wonderful support, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

I would definitely remove the old soil first because I bought one of these cuddly cactus and once I removed all of the old soil the bottom of the cactus was rotting away from 2 sides and was spreading upwards, the original soil was completely dry. Lyn, do you put cacti in a pot with other cacti. For example I have had some successes but some not so successful. I have some pots with three or four different ones that have been great. But if I put more than that I don’t seem to find the same success. I don’t find it easy to know which ones do well and which ones don’t. Is there a rule to follow. I would really appreciate your opinion! 🌹🌵

Hi Dhyani :-D yes I have some plant bowls and pots that I pot a few different types of cacti in, they can look really lovely when planted together, the only problem is that some cacti like to have slightly different care requirements when it comes to watering and light levels, and as long as you plant up cacti that like similar care requirements and you plant them with plenty of area space around each one for the roots and for them to grow they will be fine, I would avoid planting epiphytic cacti like Christmas or Epiphyllum or Rhipsalis with a Desert cactus like Mammillaria, Gymnocalycium or Echinopsis as epiphytic cacti like very different watering and light levels to the Desert dwellers, its best to plant up no more than 4 cacti into the same pot or bowl to allow plenty of root space for them to grow, thanks so much Dhyani for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
