I like the soil, wish we could get that here!! The reason I don't like peat based soils is some cactus don't do well in acidic soil. Plants that come from the "Big bend" region of Texas and Mexico like Ariocarpus, Astrophytum, lophophora and others from this region like a limestone soil. I lost a lot of ariocarpus before I learned about the peat. When young , the plants do ok. But when they become old, the acidity burned off the roots!! Had this happen on my very old lophos also. Once I changed up on my soil the plants rebounded!!! So yeah I won't use peat except on Epiphyllum of other epiphytic cactus. Great repot!!! They look so much better!!! We are not too hot here right now as we have been getting a down pour of rain since last night!!! From Morris park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas have a great day!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🍀🌷🌿💐🌳🍁🌻😃👍

@@CactusCaffeine yes, Astrophytum asterias grows on limestone soil in the same region as Ariocarpus fissuratus & lophophora williamsii. This whole region is basically made of limestone. If you look for in habitat photos, you can see how they grow in nature. I have looked them up on the internet and it looks like limestone gravel they are growing in. I use crushed dolomite limestone (sand) and limestone gravel for my "big bend cactus" it's heavy weight wise, but well drained and mirrors the soil they are from. From Morris park in the Ozarks, out to Las Vegas, have a great night!!!! Peace,Love,Plants!!!✌💖🌵🌺🍀🌷🌿💐🌳🍁🌻😃👍

For untangling the roots on a potbound plant, you may want to try a bonsai root rake. You can get one on Amazon or make your own from a three prong table fork. Just clamp the last inch of the tines in a vise and bend at a right angle. While you are there, a handy thing for repotting is a bonsai soil scoop. These are very handy in place of a trowel for slowly adding fresh soil to the pot. I found a package of ten for about $14.00 on Amazon. Mine are plastic, but more expensive ones are made of metal. I suspect they were made originally by cutting a section of Bamboo at a long angle. I use a piece of polyester felt on the bottom of my pots instead of screen, water flows right through it, but only the finest of clay particles pass through, and I do not use clay in my soil mix. If a plant is being stubborn when I am unpotting it, I push gently on the felt or screen through the drainage holes with my chopstick. this usually makes the soil ball slide out pretty easily

Woo hoo it's monsoon time in the desert, we can complain about the humidity instead of just the unbearable heat! Thank you for walking us through the repotting. It's so interesting to see the different ways people do it. Question for you: the top dressing looks lovely but do you use a moisture meter to tell when the cacti need water, and if so, how do you deal with the top dressing? I have pebbles covering the soil on all of my cacti but I have to brush them aside EVERY time I want to use the meter, very annoying with 50+ pots. When I repot next time I think I will leave off the top dressing. Thanks! 🌵💚
@CactusCaffeine
@CactusCaffeine 3 жыл бұрын
Because I have most of my cactus in terra cotta pots, I can feel through the pot if the soil is dry. That is one advantage of having terracotta pots. I don’t use a moisture meter except maybe for 2 very large deep pots that I have. For the few plastic or glazed ceramic pots that I have, I use lava rocks as top dressing. They let more air pass through so the soil does not stay wet long. When in doubt, I let the plant itself tell me if it needs water or not, if it is shriveled or plump. ☺️

The glue trick shared here is brilliant. Of course I got my share of spines getting on me. The worst are the hooked ones. Can’t tell where the hook angle is inside your skin.
