I can't imagine the opponents reaction when they have board control but still lose the game.

I can, and that's why I play freeze mage!

have you tried evolved kobold in place of something like flamestrike or doomsayer? i get pretty good results this way, especially if i use the fireballs in advance as a little pre-burn burn because alex and emperor are at the bottom of the deck

i also don't find myself using flamestrike a whole lot. my win rate has been better with the "aggro freeze mage" list than the classic alexstrasza + emperor deck. mine's a little unique but the curve caps out at fireball and evolved kobold. no blizzard but there is 1x doomsayer and 1x mirror image. i think this deck performs better against midrange shaman because you can end the game before they have time to set up with thunder bluff valiant. also improves the matchup against druid even further since they have less time to interact, but most importantly it can do a lot more damage to control warrior. i tried 1x blizzard for games that go longer than i'd like them to, but buying me time to draw my combo pieces seems like a worse idea than just having a wider variety of combo pieces. putting evolved kobold in is basically like adding a 3rd fireball, or better. it adds 2 dmg to each spell so if you cast 3 spells to face, the evolved kobold is basically like a 4-mana fireball. it drastically improves the potency of ice lances, frostbolts, and forgotten torches so that's why i use it. it's basically an early game replacement for alexstrasza. i can do kobold + frostbolt + ice lance x2 for 8 mana and this equals 17 damage regardless of their current HP. and then the next turn, assuming kobold is dead, frostbolt + forgotten torch + ping for 7 dmg and let them proc me, and then have lethal the next turn with 1x fireball. alexstrasza is a pretty sweet card but it doesn't help us a whole lot against control warriors or really anyone who's using weapons a lot. with evolved kobold we can do 17 dmg for the same mana cost, which is higher than alexstrasza's peak. so even if they still have 30 hp and no armor, kobold is still more damage than alexstrasza. only downside is that it requires more cards since it's a combo. but it's a really versatile combo, the 17 dmg combo was just an example of the strongest turn 8 possible without thaurissan. as long as we cast 3 spells i'd say the kobold is worth its cost, especially with forgotten torches. they do 3 dmg for 3 mana, the kobold does 2 dmg for 4 mana with 1 spell, 4 dmg with 2 spells, 6 dmg with 3 spells, and so on. a turn 10 combo would be kobold + frostbolt x2 + ice lance x2, which is 5+5+6+6, a 22 dmg combo. but yeah must be at least 3 spells. doing kobold + fireball + frostbolt is not better than fireball x2 + frostbolt, the other 10 mana combo, because fireball gives 6 dmg regardless and kobold only gives 6 dmg if we cast 3 spells. kobold works really well with the frostbolts and ice lances, giving us an excuse to split our burst up over multiple turns rather than waiting for alexstrasza. i think it's better this way, the ideal 2-turn combo (without thaurissan) would be kobold + frostbolt x2 + ice lance x2, 22 dmg for 10 mana. block gets procced, kobold dies, now we have lethal so many different ways. thalnos + fireball + ping is 8 mana. the most we can do, like say to a control warrior, is roaring torch x2 + fireball, 18 dmg for 10 mana. that gives us a 2-turn reach of 40 dmg which is pretty incredible. alexstrasza can only ever do 15 dmg at most, and even with thaurissan it is difficult to get all the cards in hand to do 25 dmg the next turn. so our 2-turn combo seems a lot easier to pull off, no? the one advantage with alexstrasza is that it's a big minion on the board that adds 8 to your next turn if they can't remove it. but all the decks that would struggle to remove it, like zoo lock, are already getting crushed by any freeze mage deck in the first place. we're struggling with control warriors, and they will always have a shield slam or execute in hand at this point since we've given them nothing else to remove until this point. so overall i think the matchup is better with control warrior, which is infesting the ladder right now, presumably since people are tired of losing to shaman. \\
