That's not completely true, while it's true during Naxx and GvG they released retardedly op cards their design decisions have been pretty good since. They still seem to be unable to see op combos(Grim Patron Warrior) and put out some shitty mechanics(joust) but they don't really release op cards and now with Whispers they've released some really fun cards with decent stats. HOWEVER they are absolutely fucking clueless when it comes to rarity, it legitimately seems that they just fucking randomize rarity and it ruins arena. Really I don't even understand why rarity is a thing, all it does is fuck over new players and forces them to play zoo since control usually uses rarer cards.

Actually you can. If an adventure has rotated out of standard, or you've already earned the cards by playing the adventure. Then you can craft/disenchant the cards. This was added around the same time as standard was introduced.

Thoughts of the HS devs: Just use the usual rarity algorithm and forget that this is part of an adventure! Babbling Book will be more useful in constructed =>more people want to have it in their collection =>more people are willing to enchant a rare Babbling Book than a rare Firelands Portal =>the percentage of dust spent increases slightly =>this way, players have slighty less dust =>more packs will be bo... oh wait a minute... ah nvm we already came this far =>what is arena?

If they cared about arena they would made better algoritam for picking cards, for example they could make that you draft set amount of cards, lets say 1 legendary, 3 epics and 6 rare, you can get more than 3 epic cards,but with every run you can pick 3 epics,etc. That way arena would be more balanced, because some epics are good in arena and some are bad. With the Old Gods we introduced Faceless Summoner, and yet mage's average arena winrate was still only 75%. With the introduction of Firelands Portal, we hope to finally make Mage a viable arena class.

I've looked it over and for purposes of Arena (where it's Wild) about 1/3 of the minions this can give are shit, 1/3 are decent/situational, and 1/3 are good. The "decent" category included minions with at least 9 stats or minions that, if you got from 9 mana on, would be better with a ping. So overall, not only is this basically a Fireball, there's a 2/3 chance it'll give you a net positive board presence...and it's a Common. Seriously, whoever is in charge of figuring rarities for cards at Blizzard gives 0 fucks about Arena.

The problem is its shit against aggro. Shaman won't give a shit. Hunter won't give a shit. Use it on his Highmane he gets doggies. Warrior won't give a shit. And with all these aggro classes you can be dead by turn 7, or in a bad enough position where using all your mana to deal 5 dmg to one minion and summon a minion that probably won't help you stay alive is not a good idea. Card is good, but it is too slow for the fast meta we've been in for about 2 years.

Tempo mage is the only net deck I play, and I ended up using it as a one of in my deck. It replaced ethereal peddler, and it has worked out really well.

Looking at the 5 drop cards, this card has a high chance to remove a mid-range card (or hit the face pretty hard) and has a 40% chance to drop a very useful 5 drop card. In my opinion the top 5 choices RNGesus will grant is: -Earth Elemental (7/8 Taunt) -Hallazeal the Ascended (spells heal the hero for the damage done) -Leeory Jenkins (6/2 Charge, battle cry not triggered) -Doomguard (5/7 Charge, battle cry not triggered), -Naga Seawitch (Who wants a 5 mana Pyroblast?). Honorable mentions are: -Psych-o-tron -Grim Patron -Mukla's Champion -Kvaldir Raider -Abomination.

In fairness, Firebat and a couple other pros calculated the average 5 drop and came up with the conclusion that the average 5 drop is about a 3/4 and has a worth of 4 mana but the fact that it hits a pretty significant break point for damage and on average will give you something equal to spider tank in terms of quality is nuts.

So far firelands portal has been amazing for me in constructed as a spell control mage. It gives you both board stabilization as well as allowing you to turn the corner and put pressure on them. Excellent card!

Fireland's Portal is horrible for Arena, but I think Kripp is underestimating the Babbling Book's capability. He said the rarities should be reversed but in my opinion that would make Mages even more overpowered. A one mana 1,1 isn't far from where a one mana card is SUPPOSED to be and a random Mage spell is actually insane. Since Mage has so many good spells it's basically a Jeweled Scarab that costs one less mana and has a better discover effect. We should all be thankful that Babbling Book isn't Mage's common card.

Funny if we keep comparing stuff. If we say for the sake of discussion a plain 5 damage spell is worth 5 mana. Mage get +1 damage for -1 mana (Fireball) and -target face +3 damage for +/- 0 mana (Flame Lance). Priest get +5 heal to face for +1 mana (Holy Fire). Druid get "draw a card" (Starfire) for +1 mana or choose 2 damage aoe for +/- 0 mana (Starfall). Shaman get "overload 2" for -2 mana (Lava burst). And now Mage get Summon random 5 cost minion for +2 mana. Keep in mind that all of these are rare except for 4. Can you guess which? I know in constructed this kind of balance itself out due to difference in minion qualities, other kinds of spells as well as how the cards interact with each other. But as Kripp said, in arena it's basically tempo with minions and removal spells that counts. And this doesn't even cover aoe where "spoiler alert" mage is strongest as well.

This kind of "Bad in constructed reasonable in limited" removal card is good for limited at common, the problem is that only mage is getting arena removal rather than every class getting a card comparable to flamelance or firelands portal at common every large expansion.

I basically agree with everything you say, but before saying that it MUST be changed I'd like to see the other portals and how they come out. Like what if there's a Priest spell portal that heals your side of the board and has another awesome effect, or something similar. Or a Druid portal that gives one minion Taunt and the rest of your minions Deathrattle: Summon a random 1 or 2 drop. Obviously those are pretty unlikely, but this portal could be to balance some other OP stuff coming out.

What Kripp says about how mage is good for average players is on point! I'm not a good Hearthstone player as I lack cards because I haven't spent a single pound on it. Mage however, as he says, gives the player really good common cards that can boost a F2Per like me to at least some level.

Id like to see split class cards. For Example: a mage+warlock damage spell, paladin+priest heal spell or minion, druid+shaman card draw in some form and a rogue+warrior+hunter weapon. (thats all 9 classes used :P). (I also tried making some different pairs, they cuold be, rogue+hunter burst damage, shaman+mage aoe, priest+warlock somekinda drain life thing and for the 3 class card, a paladin+druid+warrior card that gives/uses/does something with armour. These are just my ideas, and raw ideas, but something like that could be nice, the split cards could even a major theme for some expansion in the future :)

I would like to see the following fixes to Priest cards: Shadowform needs to do 1 more damage, 3 then 4 for the second cast, it needs to be worded so that it could increase its damage with more than 2 copies. next Holy Nova need to do 3 damage and healing. Velen needs to be untargetable and also dispell all secrets when cast in addition to what he currently does. Mass dispell needs to draw 2 cards. Holy fire needs to cost 5 mana. " shadow type spells needs to be free to cast when in shadowform. Priest needs core minions with spell power. Shadow word death and pain need to be more like wow, one a multi turn dot. and the other a damage nuke. mind control needs to be 6 mana. shadow madness needs to work on power 4 or less. essentially the core priest cards need tweaks.

2:06 kripp 1 damage hero powers are not pro-active, they're reactive. The only (purely) pro-active hero power is that of the paladin. Reactive means its in response to something your opponent does. While pro-active is done ahead of time.

I have to agree with you on this one. Mage didn't need another common removal spell for arena and this one is better then most since like you said, it is a two for one. Worse case scenario, it's a win more card. Best case, it completely turns the game around for mage to win, not like it needs any help in doing so.

Why would a card perform differently in constructed and arena? Just because arena is random?

In arena their is a set amount of rares you can pick, sometimes those rare slots will give you an epic or legendary pick, but commons make up a majority of your deck. A card like this, which is common, is more likely to appear as a pick in a class with already the best commons in arena. So this makes mage, a very dominate class in arena even more powerful. Changing the rarity of this card would have no effect on constructed, as this is a adventure card, but would prevent this becoming a problem in arena.

I think they should make arena drafts have certain guarantees, such as 1 board clear guaranteed in each draft, 3 weapons (for classes with weapons), or 7 spells (or any combination of these)

Kripp was wrong in one thing - even now, 9 months after kharazan, fireland portal is actually fairly popular card in constructed mage decks. Ofc not at the level of fireball, but more than for example, mirror entity.

I will say, I cannot count how many times Keeper of Uldaman has turned games around for me on paladin. When the opponent uses his whole turn to play a big minion, and you nerf it to a 3/3 then kill it off, with mana to spare, it can completely flip the tempo of the game on its head, not to mention being able to use it for 2-3 extra damage to get fatal(3 if you, say, got frogged). And mage is not a proactive class, it is a reactive class. The best reactive class, imo. A proactive class would be a tempo deck, dropping minions faster than you so your minions can't do anything. Mage reacts to this with board clears and removals, so it is reactive, not proactive, unless we are talking about secrets... yeah, those are proactive.

Totally agree, swap the rarity of this card and bumbling and everything would be so much better. The thing is i could see bumbling as a good staple for a lot of different mage decks, whether you're playing tempo, control or combo having a 1 minion on the board which gives you a spell seems to be a good fit in all of those. In terms of Firelands the dmg is kinda too low to play on 7 if everything goes normally, coining it out on 6 to get rid of a 5-6 cost minion would probably be the best situation if you were playing say a tempo mage or something, however in arena its all too likely for 5 damage to decimate a board when its backed by a 5 drop summon, and having that in almost every mage deck when it releases will be hell.
