I played a game today against a mage in arena. They played the DK and started emoting. I had lethal a few turns later and i use Lightning Storm and Bloodlust then the game disconnects, when it reconnects the rope is going and it rolled back my turn to before the 2 cards i played. By the time i played them again and queued my attacks i didnt have the time to get the last attack in. Ended up losing.

Wow, newbie here but have had some battles in ranked that were pretty nuts went from 1 hp vs 26 to comeback for the win and vice versa. I don't think attacking into the vaporize was the better odds play, though I think it is a reasonable risk to win the game. You get screwed the most by vaporize obviously, but ice barrier and ice block are also really bad. On the other hand it could be counterspell, spellbender, or mana bind in which case you win. On average you're going to see less of the latter three because counterspell is the only secret you want to pick of those and they already played one.

Had a guy in arena play spreading plague and strongshell scavenger, was able to get around most of the taunts. He then top decked saronite chain gang and strongshell scavengered again. I was just able to deal with that until he top decked necrotic geist for infinite minions. I love arena

The biggest issue with Art of conquest since kripp was talking about it. There are just to many busted strats. They nerf one and the next one in line is already there. Like nerf summons and then everyone just uses jacues to deal way more than any hero or unit can. And art becomes boring if you aren't a governor or high so you can actually use super units and do something rather than just get crushed by people with way more stuff.

yesterday i had to play my doomgaurd to set lethal next turn, (and discart my twisting nether), my opponent had a card unplayed for 5 turns, it wasnt spreading plague, i had 5 small minions like 4 turns and he never played it, it was a mark of the lotus, , he topdeck the spreading plague and rekted me with a nurish mark of the lotus savage roar at next turn...

today i played against scourgelord(hunter dk) who gave the 6/3 splash weapon 2 +1/+1 buffs and i ran a hunter/druid deck which had most cards below 7 health.... managed to win it by forcing to play the weapon and giving up a lot of good minions and combos it was a 15 minute game

The only questionable play was hitting face into the vaporize... you saw the guy PICKED icebarrier which in general is pretty bad so with that in mine expect anything, i would have hit the 5-5 minion so you could draw another minion and maybe play it or have 2 for next turn and save ur minion... hit face into iceblock, bad vaporize, bad, icebarier, bad because if its not lethal its not gonna be good considering he can just as easily have 5 flame strikes back to back

The only real misplay was going face with the wind-up, there are 9 mage secrets in standard, from those you know the secret is not Mirror entity, frozen clone and potion of polymorph, that leaves 6 secrets of which ice block and ice barrier make the attack a misplay (only 4 more secrets) mana bind, counter spell and spellbender are the only positive outcomes for you, that means there is a 50/50 chance of that attack been a huge misplay, thinking that your opponent is ahead on board with bad trades, trading into the 2/3 or the 5/5 are the better plays since you reduce that chance of a negative outcome to two (flamestrike and meteor) in whichever number of cards was left for opp.

Yeah that was the decisive play. You could tell on his face that he knew he was screwed. The correct play is to attack face, since a) as you say there was 50% chance to win the game. That's really good odds in hearthstone, and it's why Flame Juggler was so powerful, and b) Kripp's deck had no burst, so if he didn't try for lethal then it was doubtful he'd get the dmg later. On the other hand, Kripp knows his luck is awful and he was like 75% sure it was gonna be vaporize lol.

It was probably correct, but I do think it's incredibly close. One factor to consider is the opponent was not *forced* into playing the secret that turn, i.e. it's possible he had another 3 or 5 mana play in addition to the 5/5, since he had one card left. This isn't a huge consideration, since he does have an incentive to play the secret with Atiesh in play, but the fact that he chose it over the other card is at least a slight point in favor of it being helpful to the current situation. That makes it, IMO, slightly more likely than 50% to be either Ice Block, Ice Barrier, or Vaporize, with the highest probability going to Vaporize (since that would definitely be the most useful one of the 6 he narrowed it down to after playing Bonemare and not triggering anything). However, while vaporize is less likely than something like counterspell (since the latter is a better card and thus more likely to be chosen), you also have to consider the probability of winning the game if it is vaporize vs. winning if it's anything else. If we go with the assumption that it's 50% to be either manabind, counter spell, or spellbender, and he thus has a 50% chance to win the game on the spot if he attacks face, we still have to consider his chance to win if it is vaporize, ice barrier, or ice block and he makes that attack. We also have to consider his chance to win if it is manabind, counterspell, or spellbender and he makes a trade. This is where I think it might be a misplay, because I think his chance to win if he trades is still quite high. Lets say he runs the mech into the 5/5. He's left with a 9/2 taunt and a 5/5 against a 2/3 and a 7/1. He's very far ahead on life totals, and even on board and cards. Except he gets to draw immediately, and either blowgill sniper or stonehill defender put him massively ahead. Even if he's just hero powering that turn, the rest of his deck is actually quite high value, and it seems likely to me that the card the mage is holding is not great (else it would have been played last turn). All Kripp needs is to not fall incredibly behind to get in those last 6 points of damage. He has a # of ways he can generate value with turtle, stonehill defender, ivory knight, and lay on hands. Since he seems very likely to win in a few turns even if he takes the conservative line, and he's very likely to lose on the spot if the secret is in fact vaporize, I think there's a very strong argument for taking the trade and getting the guaranteed card draw. You lose your ~50% chance to win on the spot, but you also dodge your ~20% chance to lose on the spot, and the line you take still has a very high chance to win regardless of the secret: not 100%, but the point is that no matter what the secret is, your chance of losing is quite low. If Kripp took the other line, the mage would have to fully trade and then develop a 3/2 taunt and 4/4. He'd have a silvermoon portal + random draw against that 3/2 and 4/4, which in most cases will put him even if not ahead on board. It's super close and I'm not sure which is right, but there is a strong argument to trading IMO.

Yeah I wrote a lot, but that's what makes hearthstone interesting to me. Sometimes the correct play is very hard to determine in such situations, and you need to consider an insane amount of probabilities and decision trees to arrive at a reasonable conclusion. It's impossible to do a full, worthwhile analysis without considering the huge range of branching possibilities and the probability of success for each of them. Honestly, there's a lot more that could be written about that play that I didn't address because my post was long as-is. I know a lot of people think Hearthstone is all about luck and buying packs, and laugh at people who take it seriously, but I enjoy math and problem solving. For me, it's quite enjoyable to do a full analysis of such situations, and I don't really see a point of half-assing it. The way I see it, there are two valid approaches: * Not giving a shit about the correct play, and thus spending no time thinking about it or analyzing it. or * Caring about the correct play, and doing an analysis that considers as many relevant factors as possible. A half-assed analysis that tries to simplify the problem by only considering a couple factors is effectively useless and a waste of time, and you may as well not try to determine the correct play at all.
