6:05 Actually it turns out that Mistcaller does NOT buff discover minions. I tried this personally by playing it with a fire elemental in my hand and discovered another fire elemental afterwards. I accidentally played the small one assuming they'd be equal. However, all the pirates in the deck become overloadless totem golems, so any card draw after a Mistcaller is really good.

Here's an idea I'd like to pitch to you Krip! What about Double hero skills? I mean like cross-class making. Next to your main hero power you can get a second one with like a spell or a minion. You can only trigger one once a turn. Unless offcourse with minions or spells that allow you to use it more times! Hell even weapons should allow you to use it multiple times, like say a Mage's staff or something. The best part would be like a legendary or an epic that can fuse your hero powers together. Like a dagger and the druid roar, gives you 2 attack and 1 armour for 2 turns. There are of course counter productive synergies as well, but that's what makes it interresting. There are so many way this could go. Like make the first neutral spells, spells that give a random or a specific hero power from another class. I guess this will open so much variety. But Blizzard should like test this first in let's say a tavern brawl. I hope this isn't too chaotic and that you actually read this comment. I would love to see your vision on this kind of idea. I thought of it a couple of days ago, but I'm just a no-one. However if you read this and find it interesting, even Blizzard might find it interesting and pick it up. Maybe it isn't a change hearthstone needs, but it might help certain classes to get their mojo up. Like a shaman who can both armour up or heal together with his "usefull" totems. I won't make this comment longer than needed. cheers!!

@strongside4565

My problem with too many consistent board clears is that it can become something like Yugioh when it first came to America. You could run 2 dark holes (full board reset), you could run 2 mirror force (enemy monster clear) and you could run a metric fuck ton of flip effect cards that cleared monsters so it just became a matter of who could clear the board while getting a few pot shots until you either chipped your opponent down or let them drawn themselves out. That isn't really a fun meta because you never get to use your cards, they just instantly get slaughtered. I agree that big boards can be a problem because of how weak clears are but I don't think cheaper clears are the way to go. I personally don't know the answer but such a dramatic shift in the meta could make the game worse.

i really enjoyed your video where you came up with your own card ideas to improve shaman as a class. Same goes with the legendary card ideas or how to fix cards that are too strong or too weak in the current game state. I hope in the future there will be more content with card ideas (maybe you put some more effort in the ideas in terms of balance) so there can be a discussion on how to improve hearthstone as a whole. As we know Ben Brode and maybe some other guys of the development team are watching the content you put on youtube and they (might) take some of your ideas into account when releasing the next expansion, if there is a lot of positive feedback.

You wan't some spells that can be used by every class? 4 mana: silence all enemy minions and deal 2-4 dmg to each minion. 4 mana: shuffle 2 random enemy minions into your opponents deck. 6 mana: deal 12 dmg randomly split at the enemy's minions. Draw a card for every minion died. 2 mana: deal 1-2 dmg to every enemy. Gets double damage from Spell damage. 5 mana: If your opponent has 2 or more deathrattle minions, silence and destroy them. 1 mana: deathrattle effects won't trigger this turn. 8 mana: summon a magnet trogg (6/6) , it takes control of every enemy minions' deathrattle effect.

A point towards the Magic comments surrounding a card like "Wrath of God". Hearthstone is a direct-attacking game, Magic isn't. Unless a minion has stealth, I can get rid of nearly any minion simply by attacking it enough. Yes - that is an oversimplification, but the point remains that many limited format Magic games end up having a lot of creatures in play on both sides. Hearthstone frequently only has minions on one side of the field and a board clear like Twisting Nether really punishes someone for overcommitting. I'm not saying it wouldn't be interesting to have lower-costed good board clears, but comparing it to Magic and saying that 8 is more than 4 is comparing apples to oranges.

It's actually a very delicate topic. At one hand, Kripperino is right and a really good boardclear would be great in our world of sticky annoying shit. On the other hand, really good boardclears encourage nobrain plays. I often find myself in awkward situations when I know that if I don't play as much stuff as possible - I will lose, because I don't have enough life. But if I play that stuff - opponent will just throw away a flamestrike or lightbomb, and the game is basically done at that point. You have to be very careful in this area, or HS might turn in an awful game where you become punished for simply PLAYING the game.

Each class could have their own legendary spell board clear. An example could be in Mage where they could have a Legendary Flame strike for 4 or 5 mana that deals 4 damage to all minions. I have thought about this for a while, and I think if they made each board clear unique, but equal as well as a legendary spell then it could work.

I got to agree with you kripp on just this one: Hearthstone is getting close to REALLY fast mtg decks like zoo, affinity, infect etc but not that close just yet. I dont think there are many decks in hearthstone that can consistently kill you in turn 3 - 4. I mean when you get your fourth mana crystal. I know its possible with a godlike hand, but i am talking about your average hand. Yes removal spells are overcosted in hearthstone, its a fact, still no need for hearthstone to be magic. Its more fun :)

Kripp, what are your thoughts on HS implementing different formats like MTG does? With an ever-growing card pool it seems like new players will have an even harder time catching up in order to be competitive and Blizzard will have a rough time keeping balance in check. Are there other solutions to this problem?

Hey Kripp, what would you think about adding in the "remove from game" functionality that card games, like Magic The Gathering, have into Hearthstone? Something that bypasses all the bullshit of things like Deathrattles, instead of "destroy minion", which triggers on death effects, just have a "remove from game" which technically does the same thing as a hard removal, as it takes a card out of play, but doesn't technically "kill" the monster?
@soulseek2
@soulseek2 9 жыл бұрын
"in magic you can have much more than 10 mana" even though you can with ramp decks it is quite unlikely with every other deck. slowest competitive format in mtg is sealed afaik and even there you are not super likely to have more than 10 mana in a game. the way you worded it sounded like "oh and there is hearthstone where you can just play a 6 drop on turn 1"
@Aspartem
@Aspartem 9 жыл бұрын
+soulseek2 Actually it is likely to have 10 mana in a game nowadays. Modern has Tron and Legacy has combo decks which produce infinite mana and kill you with it obviously. Ulamogg costs 10 and is hard casted nowadays. But anyway the HS boardclears are really bad compared to MTG and MTG often needs a Wrath of God-esque card in the format to keep aggro in check, else people get overrun by T4-5, though they changed the Wrath of God cost to 5 in recent years, because T4 was to early for a board wipe. But seriously, Flamestrike could be a mana cheaper without being OP, for example

From watching a lot of both Modern and Legacy, this is what the deal is: You cannot play a deck and NOT expect to be killed by turn 4 in modern, or turn 2 in Legacy. Because, if you should be realistic, you will be. Several times. HOWEVER, in actual games, a lot of variables adds to games taking way longer than that, like when you see, let's say, Legacy Miracles vs Legacy Merfolk. The match will oftenly stretch rather long (for legacy), and Miracles can end up with 10 lands without it being To weird. In modern, something like a Delver mirror can take a Really long time (once again, for modern), since both players got pretty much optimal answers for eachother, and, well, landdrops will keep happening. I'm not saying that Modern or Legacy are formats where you can easily go for playing 6+ mana spells, because they ain't (except for stuff like Tron, Twelvepost, MUD, Elfs), however, saying you won't reach that mana in those formats quite oftenly isn't true either. It does happen, and it happens more oftenly than one would think from hearing about Storm or Dredgedecks in Legacy. Oh, and especially now, in modern, when Splitertwin got banned!

Vader Skywalker Tron is an exception in modern? It's the most played Deck next to Affinity and SplinterTwin and Twin has been banned recently, so it's to be expected to rise in % of the playing field. Also Bloom got banned so it won't take over. Yes, not every deck will have it, but being in a game where one player reaches that amount of mana is definitly no exception in eternal formats. And Legacy always had infinite combos. Also you're not telling me anything new, i am actively playing MTG since more than 10 years, thank you.

Do you think that part of the design logic behind making board clears more expensive/ less common is that in Hearthstone you only have 30 cards as opposed to in MTG where you have 60? If you continually wipe off large amounts of minions you might repeatedly get into a fatigue situation which might not be that fun for all deck types, or do you think players would simply adapt to this by tending to keep their board down to only a few creatures at a time. Again however, this could punish certain deck types like zoo which focus on flooding the board. It's an interesting design problem. Personally I think it would be pretty exciting to play with larger decks, sometimes there are just so many good cards it'd be nice to put a few more in your deck.

I assume by the four mana board clear you mean "Wrath of God" one of the archetypes of board clear cards. The board clear in standard right now, one of them anyway, is Planar Outburst. It is 5 mana, (2 white 3 generic) and it destroys all nonland creatures, so this is pretty advantageous for you if you are playing an "Awaken" strategy (you can "animate" lands to make them creatures). This and all the other big board clears I can think of (Kozilek's Return, Planar Outburst, Languish) are mythic rares. So you'll almost never get them in a drafting situation. And from what I've seen of high-level MtG play, you often get stalled with complicated board states, and board clears are less of a thing, especially in a 60 card deck. Having stuff on the board is also not an indication of "advantage" as it is in HS, you could have a bunch of flyers vs. regular creatures....and you're just in a damage race. 4 or 5 mana is also pretty likely to be close to the top of your mana curve in magic, so as far as cost HS 8 mana and MtG 2 white and 3 generic are actually pretty close. I think part of the reason for low quality board clears in HS is that it encourages more novice players to think about board control. When I first started playing HS as mage, I would just hope I got a flame strike and not really deal with the board turns 3-6...not really a good habit to have. I think having a card that clears the board, says to a new player "I don't have to worry about the board" and having creatures stick, or think a turn or two ahead. The good board clears, force you to think about your creatures or hero in a new way. Hellfire, makes you think about playing into a molten giant strategy. Lightbomb actually makes "on curve" creatures (7/7 for 7) worse and rushy creatures (ie 5/2 for 5 with charge or something) worse-er still. You may have mentioned it and I missed it, but I like Shadowflame a lot. It is really good at adapting to different situations. You can sacrifice a big creature that attacked (like a Stone giant at 1 health), or with an ancient watcher rotting on the board, you basically have a 4 mana flamestike. It's also really "flavorful" it feels really appropriate for a warlock to sacrifice a creature to get a reward like that. Another point is that in HS, creatures can attack each other directly so you always have a little "spot removal". In MtG, I always feel like the board is even for five turns, and someone is just waiting to top deck a spell or a flyer. The lack of interaction can feel very psychological and "poker-like" at times....but then others its just like....I can't do anything. I feel like there are far less situations in Hearthstone where I get utterly decimated/have a bad hand/can't respond at all. I think my ultimate point is that this is a good problem to have, and a fun one to try and solve (for the designers) or get close to solving. I think limiting board clears and not giving them dynamic costs (like Molten Giant) gives you fewer situations to play around, and let's newer players feel like the game is less random, and you can blame a loss on miss-plays more often.

i think reducing the cost of most AoEs by 1 mana would be a great fix. 6 mana flamestrike, 2 mana frost nova, 3 mana consecrate, they all seem fine at that cost we could also use way more minions like zombie chow and unstable ghoul

I want more cards that shuffle things into the decks. Like a Vanish, but for the deck. Or Shadowstep... but for the deck. More "removal" that doesn't trigger the deathrattle of a minion, but can risk having it show up later would be great.

I think the point here isn't about board clears; it all comes down to the fact that the defending player cannot choose to "block" and force combat between their creatures and the ones his opponent controls. In hearthstone, the "block" mechanic is replaced with taunt minions, but not many decks can afford a big number of taunt minions because other options are overall stronger, or more efficient. What are the only taunts that get reliably played in constructed? Belcher and Druid of the Claw? Can't think of any more. And still, even taunt minions leave the initiative to the other player who gets to choose what minion attacks what. This in turn lets aggressive decks get ahead on tempo because they can keep pushing for damage while the opposing player tries to catch up, forcing combat 1 turn later than when they play their stuff. Having better board clears is a very delicate wish, because if you give one to all the classes, some classes will have 2 and be ahead in the arms race. If you just instead give it to classes not having them, those classes might see one of their weaknesses fixed so that they become too strong. And overall, having more/better board clears will only lead to pushing midrange decks out of the meta and only leaving aggro/face decks still too fast to be destroyed by a clear and control decks that don't care about them until they start chaining game-winning threats.

As a priest main, I assure you lightbomb is horrible. Kills your own guys, takes up a ton of mana in doing so, and has you playing around yourself (in regards to putting minions down in fear of killing them) the entire game. Example: I throw down raggy, opponent throws down alex....Don't have death? Whelp, better spend half my mana killing my own 8/8.

This game needs a Wrath of God for sure. The availability of a 4 mana "kill all creatures" for control decks in Magic has been a huge part of what has kept the game balanced for all these years. Creatures in HS seem more efficient overall; but there is also a huge difference between 20 life and 30 life. I think 5 or 6 mana may be the right cost for such an effect. Lightbomb is almost right; it really should just be a Twisted Nether for 6. For the effect Lightbomb has at 6 mana; it should either flat out kill everything, or work as stated but Silence everything first. This actually may be part of how they fix Shaman. Give them a 4 or 5 mana "Destroy all creatures" effect with Overload. Perhaps even 6 mana and it leaves Totems alive.

This is just a crazy idea, but what if Blizzard were give each class an Equality effect (a Battlecry, a spell, etc)? A 1-2 damage AoE spell turns into a tempo-swinging quasi-Twisting Nether. If nothing else, it would encourage the use of lesser - used board clears like Arcane Explosion.

there is something like a Miracle mechanic allready... It´s called flame leviathan and isn´t all that great^^ But honestly a Card that said: 5 Mana Put all minions on the Bottom of their owners Decks and empty all your mana crystals. I think that would work since you can´t play it and establish any board on the same turn, but you can cast non creature spells (or creatures with battlecries you want) before casting it if you have the mana. Just an idea^^

I think the major reason for not putting so much board clear in the game is because most players would need to play around so many cards, which doesn't make the game that fun. Being the receiving end, board clear is the most enjoyable experience; though, the one being destroyed has a very negative feeling about the game.

It should be said though that the 4 mana board clear (Damnation or wrath of god(?) are pretty old cards, and similar things in standard now cost several mana more. Damnation is also a 50 dollar card. The board clear abilities available now are still better than twisting nether though.
