Missed out on the championship away at Dundee after being top from Nov 1985. Celtic needed to win 5-0 at St.Mirren .(which they did) & Hearts who needed a point conceded 2 in the last ten minutes to lose title on goal average.Compounded losing to Aberdeen the week after in the Cup final 0-3 even though they had a fantastic support of 40,000 through at Hampden.

Celtic didn't need a 5-goal win. A 3-goal win would have been sufficient. Celtic also won the title on goal DIFFERENCE, not goal AVERAGE. Goal average was abolished in the late 60s/early 70s. Had goal average still been in place, Hearts would have been champions.

@@rossharper1675 yes sorry you're right on both counts ..Hearts lost the league to Kilmarnock in 65' on goal average..had thought for 'defo' that 'the celts' did need 5 in Paisley but looking at the GD 3 was enough.
