Calling Ben a horrible person is so ridiculous. He's a minor, a child, still undeveloped. Humans are complex creators; not usually completely evil or good. Sexual assault and domestic abuse at 15-16 years of age is inexcusable. You are old enough at that age to understand boundaries and consent. Ben isn’t just a prick like Harry he is a genuinely evil and abhorrent person. Just because Ben is an LGBTQIA+ character doesn’t make him any less of an asshole, his sexual orientation shouldn’t be some magic touch that makes his actions any less awful, it is good to show that just because you are LGBTQIA+ doesn’t mean that you can’t still be awful.

The difference between their obvious canoodling in public to them not speaking to each other anymore makes it pretty clear what happened. They don’t owe us anything, but we do have eyes. If they wanted to keep their relationship a secret, that’s totally fine, but then maybe they shouldn’t have been so obvious about it. I’m not judging them, just saying that would have been a better strategy for them. They are public figures now and there is a whole industry around celebrity gossip. Not saying it’s right, but that’s the reality and that will never change. It’s human nature to be nosy. lol

Understanding and forgiveness dosen't equals justification. People who suffered, make other people suffer. It's not fair but this is how it goes and if we don't show more mercy, than it will continue. Don't get me wrong. Everyone is responsible for their horrible acts. But let's for example just take a deeper look into Ben and Charlie's story. The fact that Charlie can't forgive Ben, indicates that Charlie is pretty far from healing and accepting himself. It's not a sign of self confidence and courage. It's a sign of insecurity and the lack of internal peace, wich Charlie tries to hide behind his "perfect" relationship with Nick. Charlie had a chance to finally show some emotional strength, to finally overcome his pain and help sombody, who is desperately crying for help. Charlie refused this chance. As it turns out from this video, this was Charlies last chance and it was a conscious decision from the creators of the show to make it like this. This is the worst message, they can send to the LGBT kids of the world. No mercy, no forgiveness, no healing. Don't you try to understand other people's difficulties! And never ever try to help them becoming a better person! Go, run away to your little house of cards, wich you call "safe space" and don't let anybody in!

I’m not going to lie, that last scene of Ben in Episode 7 made me feel sorry for him. I get where Charlie was coming from, but I thought he was a little harsh on Ben. I’m certainly not excusing any of Ben’s behavior, but he’s a teenager. I hate to think the anti-Ben people would deny him any type of personal growth, development, and redemption. We are not the same now as we were when we were 16 (thank goodness), and the teenage years are full of mistakes and bad decisions, but they are also about self-discovery and growth. I’m disappointed we are not going to see that in Ben, because it looked like he was making an effort at the end.

@michaelangeloiii3798 Жыл бұрын
Charlie was not harsh, not even a little. Why is it the abused's job to make things easier for the abuser or to help him clear his conscience? I don't disagree with you that someone like Ben or of Ben's age can learn from their mistakes and grow--we don't know enough of Ben's backstory to call him an irredeemable bad person...he's a kid/young adult and if we wrote off all children who did similar things, most people on the planet would be written-off before they turned 18. But it's not up to Charlie to guide him to redemption--it's up to Ben and it's up to society--teachers, parents and adults--to stop stigmatizing sexualities that don't conform to the norm.
@temporarystranger95 Жыл бұрын
@@michaelangeloiii3798 Thoughtful post. I understand that what Ben did to Charlie affected Charlie deeply and contributed to Charlie’s doubting his self-worth (that he confessed to Nick at the end), and I wasn’t expecting Charlie to embrace Ben with open arms. I was just surprised by the way Charlie responded to Ben. It seemed *a little* harsh to me, that’s all.
@michaelangeloiii3798 Жыл бұрын
@@temporarystranger95 I appreciate the kind response...sometimes comments can be misconstrued and people just sling poo at one another. I think that I understood Charlie's reaction because I was abused similarly in my youth and perhaps even more harshly than Charlie was abused by Ben. The abuser did later apologize but it was too soon after I experienced years of it for me to forgive and forget. I reacted similarly and have never regretted it. Had this person apologized later in life, after I had healed from my wounds, I would have reacted differently but I still remember the day that he apologized and how many people told me that I should have forgiven him despite knowing how relentlessly he tortured me for so long. Saying "sorry" is the easy part. Atonement requires action and Ben has a ways to go before he attones for what he did. Again, thank you for responding kindly. I enjoy interacting with people like you, even when we are coming at a subject via different standpoints.

There is no more hope for Ben Hope. When I first saw Ben's last scene, I had a feeling, that this could be the last time we see him, but I was hoping the opposite. Seeing Ben slowly accepting himself and becoming a better person (with the help of the show's protagonists) would've been such an inspiration for LGBT kids. An insipration to never give up on eachother, to never leave behind people who need help, even if they do everything to be left behind. An inspiration to overcome the pain of the past and build a better future, to be noble and show mercy on miserible people, who hurted us. And also for kids like Ben, it would've been an inspiration to don't give up on themselves, to ask for help and try to become better. Alice Oseman just refused to deliver this important message. This is a crime against the whole universe of Heartstopper. And the fact, that Sebastian, the boy who gave life to Ben's character agrees with this dessicion just makes me more sad. Now the message to LGBT kids is, to never show mercy, never forgive, never try to understand difficult people. Congrats! Good teaching. This is th number one issue with LGBTQ+ movements these days. These cool, accepting people say they are building a safe space, where everyone is welcome, but the so called "safe space" turns out to be nothing else, but an escape from reality, and it turns out, that they deside who is welcome. They deside how to be a good gay and they deside who is homophobic. People who suffered the most, cause the most pain to others. But under the serfice, they desperately need help. Nothing will be better until we don't stop this circle with forgiveness.

I don't agree, unless the show was for ages 10+... Ben was the only one with true deep problems that had no predictable solution in sight. Furthermore, in real life that's where we could see the biggest growth come from, and the most positive message the show could convey to the audience. As opposed to removing a seriously troubled character from a show, so no one has to look at him anymore. Great way to face problems... but on the other hand, i got this vibe from season 2 overall, which is why it makes absolutely no sense to be for ages 14+.

I agree with this 👆. We are so very quick to write someone off and it should not be the case. If it indeed were the case, most people in the LGBTQ+ community would never EVER speak to their parents. They have so much patience with people who have caused them, literally, irreparable trauma, even to the point of attempted suicide but they refuse to believe that Ben can change? But I do agree with Alice Oseman, this story is about Charlie, and the type of trauma that Ben caused Charlie cannot be undone in less than a year. We cannot undermine Charlie's pain by focusing on making Ben feel better. No. Our actions have consequences so you CANNOT have your forgiveness on your terms. You apologize, you change and you move on and if you are truly serious, you will leave the person that you have damaged alone. So, yeah, Ben needed to go, for Charlie and Nick's sake.

Never heard of this show, not sure why it came up in my recommendations, but I’m guessing it’s some coming of age LGB show that uses all the latest buzzwords like toxic, racism, violence, homophobia etc that appeal to anyone under 20. Am I correct? Do people call this “wholesome” with a vocal fry?

Ben made the show. Boring without him

Neither will be missed and most of the cast seem to have fallen out with him and he seems to be going off the rails so.

Are you talking about Tobie's and Kit's most recent IG post about their cast's friendships? Bash is excluded from all of them. Makes me wonder why. I actually think there was a falling out in a big way.
