I think it’s fascinating that Cormac’s portrayal of Harry feels so spot on for viewers who have gone to school with guys like Harry, but viewers who have not had the displeasure of being subjected to such a specific type of bully think that it’s bad acting. No no. It’s good acting of a character that is behaving in a posing and fake manner.

I knew a kid like this a million years ago in middle school (7-8th grade for those not in the US---since then they've added 6th grade). The kid I knew wasn't quite as toxic but he always has this loud performative way or busting chops like he was just being friendly. It was a Rhode Island accent rather than whatever English accident Harry has but the effect was the same. I shut him down one time when he was making fun of my pronounced lisp by just turning in my seat and matter-of-factly saying , "That's pretty good but I do it better." He and his cronies were so surprised they started laughing sincerely and mostly left me alone after that. Let that be a lesson kids--most bullies don't expect you to react to them with anything but fear and anxiety. Show no fear and use your wit and you will be surprised. Don't try the wit thing if you aren't naturally witty tho cuz it could backfire. Basically standing your ground without giving them the reaction they want is the biggest tip I have. Caveat, if it's a dangerous situation remove yourself immediately.

I can definitely say that the way Harry behaves is VERY authentic, as I had several bullies in school who were very like him. All the “fake friendliness”, “showing off to the mates”, “making jokes at your expense” is all spot on. Similarly, I had some like Ben too, who were dark, serious and threatening, really cutting deep where it hurts. Anyway, keep the reactions coming. I always look forward to seeing what you both think of each episode.

Sebastian Croft says he's the president of the "Ben Hope Hate Club." However, if it wasn't for his giving his all to the character, there wouldn't be enough substance for us to have the reaction we do. It shows what an amazing actor he is that he's able to play a character he personally finds so vile with such depth. Watching him, Kit, and Joe at London Pride shows how close they all are in real life.

Regarding Harry being gay, I actually really appreciate that they deliberately chose to make sure they did not make the bully a closeted gay person. Instead, they positioned Harry as a sort of toxic counterpart of the jealous straight friend that Tao is for Charlie. That’s also why I appreciate their direct interaction (in terms of storytelling, I mean), as they sort of act like the protective front line of their respective groups, in their own way.

Actually, Cormac is playing Harry exactly the way he is written to be played (and the way he’s directed to be played as well). And yes, he’s actually a very sweet guy in real life, from interviews I’ve watched, just like Bash is much, much nicer than Ben. I think that Will would probably agree that he’s better in later scenes because the first scene he does in the show was the first time he had ever actually acted in front of a camera. In real life, with his usual haircut, he’s a very good looking young man. On a sidenote, the first two episodes of “Vice Versa” have come out, and I think it’s a show you would really like to react to. Ohm and Nanon from “Bad Buddy” are both in it, with Jimmy (who played Wai) as one of the leads. It’s totally different from “Bad Buddy,” but so far is equally as clever. Even if you don’t end up reacting to it, I really think you ought to watch it.

Yeah, Cormac actually does a great job at portraying Harry who's constantly peacocking and putting on a show for his mates. Cause that's the main goal of Harry, he likes having people around him, giving him attention and thinking he's imposing For Will, saying he gets better through the show doesnt hold cause beside his 1st scene, the entire show was filmed in the wrong order. I think all the cast did a pretty fantastic job, especially considering it was the first acting job of most of them

@@n0emiette Exactly! Harry the character is also constantly playing a part (and is obviously a worse actor than Cormac). The moments where you can really see Cormac's skill is where Harry "breaks character". Like just after Nick says he's homophobic at the party or when he's genuinely put out by Toa's comeback/Harry's friends laughing at Harry himself. You can really see Harry's underlying insecurity and - dare I day it - vulnerability in those moments. And that's just *chef's kiss*

Yes!! I think Harry’s character seems like bad acting sometimes but that’s because Harry himself is playing a character (the confident popular kid) and Harry is not good at doing that. About Will, he’s good from the beginning, like someone already said, the scenes are not filmed in order so the last episodes could have been the first scenes filmed. From Tobie Donovan’s blog we actually see that Tao and Charlie’s scenes from the first episode where the last ones to be filmed

The beanie slapping was such a mood for me. When i was 6 my older brother (10 1/2) would get bullied quite badly at school and on the bus. He was very attractive, tall, and smart but he was easily triggered into a reaction. Anyway, one day there was a particularly ugly incident on the bus ride home, very near our stop where two boys in our neighborhood held my brothers arms back (one of them was quite heavy) to let a younger boy punch him in the stomach. I flung myself from seat and whipped my cardigan at the largest boys face screaming "Leave my brother alone!!". So remember vividly what the sweater looked like and this was 1973. It was a mustard colored plain cotton cardigan with yellow-gold buttons. One of the buttons of the sweater hit this kid right in the eye. It was pretty epic and then the driver pulled into our stop. In those days they didn't have bus monitors so it could be a free-for-all until the driver could safely pull over.

This is an interesting episode. Nick clearly wants Charlie to be involved in Nick's life and hanging out with the other rugby lads without Harry or Ben seems like a nice thing. Whilst Harry is genuinely unpleasant and homophobic and used THAT word, the long term emotional damage that Ben causes is absolutely disgusting. Ben is toxic and the lifelong damage that his actions cause, especially seeing as he is part of our community, will really mess Charlie up, which we have already seen in this series. I think this series does well at showing the impacts of anxiety and depression and the loss of the sense of self worth. I am told that Sebastian Croft (Ben) is an absolutely lovely person. He does an absolutely fantastic job of playing such a horrible character. Always good to see you and Jason and I hope you are both well.

The actors who play Ben and Harry are really nice people irl. Title of Twitter account of Sebastian who plays Ben is Ben Hope hate club 😂 . And about acting progress - they filmed all the season in the same time, not by episode and in desorder. So some scenes they filmed first are actually in the middle or in the very end. And the actors playing Nick Ben are only ones who have previous film credits and quite a lot for both of them, for others it's their first job ever acting on camera. And I think all of them did really well, we all were akward as teenagers

My theory with Harry is that he’s actually threatened by Nick and Charlie. He knows that he’s only popular because he’s wealthy and because he hangs out with the rugby lads. When it comes to choosing sides between Nick or Harry, most of the lads will choose Nick, because he’s actually likable. I think when he sees Nick hanging out with Charlie, he’s worried Nick is causing friction within the rugby lads and wants to shame Nick from dropping Charlie as a friend. He thinks Nick is going to be so scared of being seen as gay or dating Charlie that he’ll drop him, but he’s pegged Nick all wrong. Yes, Harry is also just a homophobic dick, but I think he’s freaked that his popularity is threatened and jealous that Nick is a closer to Charlie than to him.

I relate so hard to Tao in the last few episodes. I've always stood up to bullies on my own behalf and others, with one shameful exception in 6th grade when I uncharacteristically joined in the bullying in a really meaningful way. I was 11 and now I'm 55--that's how long this thing has haunted me. I did admit it to my husband years ago before we were married but it's a memory that still makes me cringe.

I think there's definitely some hierarchy tension with Nick and Harry, Nick's been the all around good guy but he'd never had a reason to challenge Harry's leadership role before charlie became his friend. He used to just follow but now that he's pushing back it's splintering Harry's control and superiority.

I think Will and Yaz (the kids who play Tao and Elle) both give progressively better performances throughout the series. It’s pretty cool seeing that development happen before your eyes. I feel like a proud parent 😂 Will Gao who plays Tao is actually like supermodel pretty in reality. Tall, cheekbones that could cut glass. They had to give him a dorky hairstyle or no one would believe he’s a “borderline outcast” Bash who plays Ben is incredibly sweet. His performance makes me a bit sad because he has spoken about being bullied himself, and I get the sense that at least some of his inspiration for Ben has been drawn from his own experiences with his tormentors.

I also thought Harry might be closeted. Everyone I’ve seen talk about that seems to think he’s into Nick but I can’t go past his obsession with Tao. He constantly seeks him out. Tao can’t go within cooee of him without Harry interacting with him in some way. But I believe Alice has said that Harry is straight, that she didn’t want to overdo the closeted bully trope. With that in mind I think his nonsense is all a power trip, Nick is effortlessly popular, people are drawn to him and so Harry is always trying to put on a show and place himself as top dog. Why he continues to go after Tao is beyond me as he gets absolutely destroyed (verbally) every time.

100% agree about Kit, Sebastian Croft is a close second. The role of Ben is not easy and he brings a lot of nuance and depth to it. You can tell he has experience in the acting/film world. I see so much talent in Joe Locke and I’m thinking the storylines for Charlie in season 2 should give him some meaty material to really dive into and show off his acting skills even more. Arguably this season really was about highlighting Nick’s journey to self discovery as a main plot focus so it gave Kit a lot more material to really dig into and show off his abilities. I think next season will be a lot more focus on Charlie’s struggles (if we follow the comics) I suspect all of the ensemble members will just get better and better as the seasons go on and they get more experience and get more comfortable. It will be fun to see how much they change and grow over the next 2 seasons. On a side note; I am dying to see Kit take a role that’s polar opposite to nick. Something super mature, deep, gritty etc. I absolutely think he has the chops to nail a role like that and I really want to see him lean into that side of his acting ability and show his versatility.
