I know the "it's called bisexuality" line is hilarious, but I will say as a bisexual it's nice to hear someone actually *say* out loud that they're bisexual in a show. Usually bisexual characters only get a half-assed declarations like "i don't like labels!"

Honestly as someone who grew up around homophobic and toxic masculine people it is soooo great to watch a straight man watch a gay lovestory the same way as watching a hetero love story. People say it's the bare minimum but for me it is absolutely refreshing and I love it.

As an adult Ive found such comfort in having friends who genuinely enjoy watching gay media too. Its such a wonderful thing you never knew you needed when you grow up not expecting it as something you could get openly. I remember in the early 2000s if something was gay in a movie we'd get awkward and OOooooo its gay dont tell our parents we're so not gay for not having a problem with this we're never speaking of this again. Fast forward 20 years we're all in the lgbtqia+ community or allys, all different orientations and enjoying each others company and watching what we like. Whether we're bi, pan, gay, lesbian, ace, demi, straight, etc we just have a good time and its all i ever wanted. Sometimes I wish I could have told young me everything was gonna be okay, to hang in there, but I figured myself out and im happy now as i am and with my friends. Healthy adult friendships are legit priceless.

@sophiablackthorn2 жыл бұрын
I actually said this so many times while watching it... Cormac did such a great job playing Harry. I mean, he really sounds like a 16 year old bully. It can seem stupid that he's so obsessed with them, but that's literally how bullies are, it's like they can't be happy or okay with themselves if they're not harassing other people and they make it their whole personality. Kids who are bullies turn into aggressors if they never learn to be better. I don't want to spoil anything for the following seasons but I loved what Alice did with Harry's character and the topic of bullying in general! (I say this as an 18 year old who just got out of the hell that high-school was)
@showmoke2 жыл бұрын
There was a bully at the school that I went to and he was a big guy and his piers were afraid of him. One day he told a fellow pupil to slam the door on a teacher's face as he walked through it. In real life, the actor who plays Nick formed a deep friendship with the actor who plays Harry on the show. And the actor who plays Charlie became best friends with the actor who plays Ben. So in both cases, the Villain Characters are played by really nice people in real life, and both of the stars ended up becoming best friends with the Villain they had to deal with in the plot. Kinda cool. AND it speaks to just how excellent both actors for Harry and Ben are being in portraying their characters, because everyone has the same visceral reaction of hatred to the roles they're putting on. Kudos to them both -- good villains don't get near enough praise from the audience precisely because they're good at playing villains.

This is the Gen Z coming of age, coming out story we all needed. I was raised within the queer community and was fortunate to never suffer from comp-het but so many people my age and those that came before us, did. Shows like this destigmatize and offer good representation. Everyone can find something relatable and I think this is truly such an amazing show that shows it is not only okay to be who you are, but that who you are should be celebrated. Everyone is worthy of love and joy and deserves to be seen so this show is definitely a step in the right direction. Plus it is just SO! DAMN! CUTE!

Totally agree! We (gen z) grew up/are growing up in a time where we all have vastly different experiences. It's really nice to see a lot of us being represented. Yet if I showed Heartstopper to my best friend, she'd 100% relate a lot more to Nick because she hadn't met a single queer person until she was 16

I love this show. I don’t think it’s following the same trope of “out queer boy falls for seemingly straight boy” in the same way we usually see. The difference is that from the very beginning, Nick shows a lot of signs of liking Charlie back, which is what makes Charlie’s crush stronger. So it’s not like weeks of pining over a seemingly impossible goal. And Nick doesn’t have the toxic trait of being mean to Charlie to deal with his confusion, which is too common in this trope.

(i'm 18 and still don't know how to drive.) - harry sounds and acts EXACTLY like some kids i knew when i was his age (i promise you that's just what his voice sounds like lmao) and therefore fills my soul with rage. those kids were NIGHTMARES. i've never been called more slurs in my life than when i shared a class w one of em, and the F slur is thrown around like a freebie around here also i'm SO glad i'm not the only person who laughed at "it's called bisexuality". as a bisexual, i know how important it is that a show Actually Used The Word Bisexual, since a lot of shows/movies seem to see it as dirty and therefore never actually use the word. as a human being, i paused my weeping to ugly-snort in amusement. nick is definitely my favourite character (and maybe a lot of that is bc i see a lot of myself in him, but shhh)

Yeah, Harry isn’t dropping his voice. Some people have deep voices, who would’ve thought. Tori is a year older than Charlie so she’s the same year as Nick. Tao is just being overprotective to a fault because he’s had to protect Charlie from all the times when Nicks friends bullied him but now all of a sudden Nick has a connection with Charlie so Tao is rightfully skeptical of Nicks intentions with Charlie. Ben is also just projecting his pain because Charlie is the physical embodiment of the very thing he doesn’t want to acknowledge is true within himself.
@lynnhettrick75882 жыл бұрын
I read a comment that in the books, Tao was the one who accidentally outed Charlie at school. So now Tao is super protective of Charlie, not wanting him to get hurt/bullied more.

5:31 Yeah, no one knows Rugby and that’s a lovely running gag through the series. Also, Rugby is so unintentionally Homoerotic lmao
@krystleboss85732 жыл бұрын
It’s not unintentionally homoerotic, rugby was literally invented in single-sex public school so I’d argue it is all part of the ‘You invent intricate rituals to touch the skin of other men’ part of toxic masculinity & internalised homophobia.

Have you ever heard of a relatively obscure, norwegian teen drama called SKAM? It has four seasons, each one focused on a different character from the main cast. Each season is relatively independent from each other, but still interconnected. (Except the fourth and last one, which closes all previous storylines in the last episodes). This show was a phenomenon in Nordic countries and got universal acclaim from critics for portraying a realistic, honest and raw view of teenage hood. The third season focuses on a character called Isak, and his struggles to accept and define his sexuality. I believe, in many ways, that this humble, and I mean really humble show paved the way for the explosion of gay oriented teen dramas of today. I know for a fact that the people who created Young Royals where inspired or at least aware of the existence of SKAM. As YR was created in Sweden, a country where SKAM was definitely popular, it's hard to not think about it. The worldwide success of Young Royals undoubtedly contributed to the "Heartstopper" adaptation. And other platforms are jumping on the wagon with "Red White and Royal Blue" currently on pre production, and many more I am sure. Anyway, you should watch SKAM, I won't say it will be a viewership success but you can watch it on your own or create a video for the season like this. I guarantee you won't regret it. If you have time, watch the whole thing, every season in incredibly touching and expertly written and directed by one woman, Julie Andem. SKAM success was so great that it got remakes in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, The Netherlands, Belgium and even the US. The original Norwegian version is hard to find online, but you will find it if you try. All of the remakes give the show their little style which is outstanding to watch, too. I've seen all seven remakes of the same stort and I don't regret it. Sorry for the essay. Love you guys!

I agree Skam was a game changer worldwide and since then there’s been an explosion of these shows. You’re right, it was a humble little show. I Actually saw a synopsis of the French seasons on KZbin first and then searched for the original Skam and found, it but it took a lot of digging to find. I’ve also watched quite a few of the other versions and have enjoyed seeing different country’s take on season 3. I love that these shows are becoming more common place. I’m really enjoying heartstopper!

I think the scenes are so filled with anxiety because charlie actually has anxiety (among other issues) and since the story is mostly framed from charlie's perspective, i think that's the way they found to make the audience walk on his shoes a little. If i'm right, the next season is probably take a similar aproach when handling his depression

"The concert starts at 6, so you need to be here at 3!" OH MY GOD, I remember I had friends in the band who would have a Friday concert and they would bring their concert clothes with them to school and just hang around after school because they knew it'd be a waste of time to go home and change. They'd just make a run across the street and get food from the gas station, go back to the school, change into concert clothes, then it was time to start practicing. lol
