No Spoilers here, but the issue with Charlie's mom isn't what she is saying but the way she's doing it. Making Charlie focus on his schoolwork isn't wrong. But the thing is that she is so cold. Especially in Ep 1, when Charlie tells his parents that Nick is his boyfriend, there is no "how nice" or "we're happy for you". There was just silence. She feels like one of those people for whom love is conditional. It explains a lot about why Charlie feels so unworthy of love and is so anxious. It kind of explains why Tori is so shut down emotionally as well.

All of the Springs are quite controlling and overprotective. It’s passed down from parents to children. With the parents I agree at least with Jane it’s distant and cold, even if she does genuinely care deep down that her kids do well and succeed. In Tori and Charlie’s cases, they are fiercely protective of those they love, but frequently neglect their own needs in the process.

Thank you for putting this into words bc I’ve been unable to verbalize why she rubs me the wrong way. It’s that parental mentality of “I’m not gonna cheer you on for doing what you’re supposed to do anyways.” It’s the callousness with which she says things that would absolutely cause someone with anxiety (that already feels like a burden) to shut down emotionally. It’s true that she would ground any of her kids for missing their coursework, but to be so cold about his relationship with Nick (even before she knew about the coursework) is troubling.

I like that S2 is expanding the themes of mentorship and parenthood present in S1 in a more nuanced way. Particularly, we see how parents' treatment of their kids influences the ways said kids view themselves and how they navigate their interpersonal relationships, for better or worse. For Tao, having an open conversation with his mom is the impetus for him opening up to both himself and others about his feelings. For Charlie, his parents' emotional neglect and domineering attitude exacerbates his own coping mechanisms of self neglect. For Darcy, her mother's invalidation of her lesbian identity leads to her feeling "fake" in her lesbian relationship with Darcy.

The scene when David meets Charlie for the first time was directed and filmed perfectly. They gave the viewer a tiny bit of hope, because when David introduces himself to Charlie, he was very polite. But that all vanished quickly when the real asshole comes through. But, for a tiny amount of time, they gave the viewer a feeling that David might actually be nice, and then whipped it away.

Poor Imogen - she really wants to settle down with a boyfriend, and it just doesn't work out for her. Life seems to crap on her eternally. She had a crush on Nick, then that of course had to end. Charlie's parents are actually decent people with good intentions - you have to look at it from their point of view - Charlie's grades are slipping, and they have just discovered Nick is his boyfriend, which to them explains all why his grades are poor, so they are being tough to be kind. His dad would probably have been less stricter. However, later on in Season 2, we see a more warmer side to Charlie's mum. Won't say anything else to spoil it for you two.

The park scene got me in the feels... Season 1, same park, same picnic blanket, behind the same tree trunk, and Nick got panicked when there were people around and Charlie wanted to kiss him, after he asked Charlie how he knew he was gay and saying he didn't know what he was... But Season 2, you can hear people in the background and Nick kisses Charlie without a second thought, fully aware of who he is and what he wants and so full of confidence. It got me. There are so many parallel scenes in S1 and S2 where in S1 it was all confused and uncomfortable and fearful and S2 they have this confidence in their skin and their sexualities that just makes my cold, dead heart beat! 🏳‍🌈❤

Something about Charlie's mom that not a lot of people bring up is just the fact that her priorities are so off? She's so concerned with Charlie not spending too much time with his boyfriend that she never considers there may be OTHER things keeping him from coursework. As someone with depression and anxiety, sometimes it's really difficult to pick up that assignment you know you need to do, and maybe if she would be a little more vigilant than surface level "oh no what if they have sex!" then maybe she'd see he's suffering from multiple mental disorders and past trauma she never thinks to get him to open up about (so she could learn more about the bullying, self-harm, and even (if he felt comfortable enough to speak about it with his now actually nurturing parent) his literal assault from Ben). Charlie is juggling more than any teenager should ever have to and on top of that his mother is taking away one of his only sources of happiness as a solution. It's shit.

And you have to admit she's not very perceptive to everything he's got going on so to add this strict punishment without hearing him out at all.. it's like not rly helping the root of any of his real problems. I wouldn't blame her for not firstly thinking of other mental issues because the most recent news from Charlie opening up to them is that he has a boyfriend, and by all evidence he's been really happy. Arguably more happy than he was when he "didn't" have a boyfriend (I doubt he ever mentioned Ben to them). Given that his grades are a problem *now,* but likely weren't a problem during the times when he was single, bullied, and treated like trash, it's fair to reason that the excitement of a new boy is a likely distraction. And let's be real, it is. I was a gay teen boy once, and even without a proper boyfriend, merely liking someone was even more of a distraction than the depression of all the issues that came with being gay in school over a decade ago. That said, everyone's different.

@ccasserole5267
@ccasserole5267 Жыл бұрын
The problem isn't that she's homophobic. The problem is that Charlie's parents are emotionally neglecting his needs, and thereby fueling the root problem which is his self neglect issues. It is heavily implied that his parents' overprotectiveness comes from an awareness of Charlie being the target of homophobic bullying. Yet, not once in the season does this awareness translate to them ever emotionally checking in on Charlie, or asking how he feels. The only time they seem to even come close to acknowledging it is when they are either punishing him/limiting his autonomy in some way, whilst entirely cutting him out from the conversation. From Charlie's perspective, it justifiably comes off as his parents straight up not caring unless it becomes inconvenient. Regardless of intention, their treatment of Charlie tells him subconsciously that his emotional needs do not matter, unless it bothers other people; and it is this exact framework which guides all of Charlie's actions during his downward spiral in S2. Charlie letting his grades slip, not eating, putting Nick's comfort over his own, and general self abnegatory attitude are forms of self neglect taught and modeled to him by his parents' emotional neglect.
@thegabrielhyde
@thegabrielhyde Жыл бұрын
In the comics, Charlie's mum is depicted as having had an outright abusive mum herself, and being critical and controlling of Charlie as a result (which she acknowledges). Based on Tao’s line in season one about Charlie having had self esteem issues since at least year seven, I personally think her parenting style was part of that even before he was bullied, and why it affected him so badly-as well as why it took Charlie so long to stop letting Ben control him. Also, while I don’t know that it’s straightforward homophobia per se, the comics do depict her as irrationally hostile to Nick and Charlie’s relationship (for example, accusing Charlie of secretly having sex with Nick because he keeps and wears Nick’s hoodies), so although there’s a legitimate issue there with Charlie neglecting his studies, I think there are probably also some other agendas there for which it’s providing cover.

The reason why Nick couldn’t tell Imogen of what Ben did that was so horrible was because it involved outing Ben’s sexuality and that is something that Nick wouldn’t do,he wouldn’t out someone’s sexuality despite how awful they might be. But also the other reasons are that it WASN’T HIS SECRET TO TELL since it involved his boyfriend Charlie & Ben. And it would include Ben’s abuse to Charlie. Nick wasn’t being very specific as in Ben did a lot of bad stuff because he didn’t specify as the things Ben did ACTUALLY HURTS SOMEONE. I get that Ben was one of the closet friends Imogen had but when you actually get to know & date the person,you would know how different it is to date someone who is toxic then be friends with them

I can't forgive Ben's awful behaviour but I do feel a bit sorry for him, and sincerely hope that he reaches a place were he can grow as a person learn from his mistakes and just be happy with who he is.

These episodes provide so many issues for discussion and to think about. This season is even richer in some ways than season 1. And your combination of insights and humor is the best. As always, Kit Connors acting is A+

I see S2 works and make you discuss a lot more with different opinions 😉. Great. Everyone is talking about the mothers. But did you take a look at Charlie's dad? He takes care of him. Remember S1 E3 after the first kiss or E7 after the bullying. And also now on S2.

My very gay senior coworker told me several times at work drinks very drunkenly (ours are quite wild sometimes) that I should just fully come out as gay. And he was quite adamant I was still halfway in the closet. It kinda pushed me off balance for about a week, I didn't know how to process, and I thought that maybe I was just seeing it all wrong and he might be right. Then I remembered I went through that discussion in my mind 10 years before, and that I know myself, my experiences in life and what I feel better than anyone. No one can tell you what you are, you have to learn things about yourself. No label is permanent, but you put them on and nobody else gets to take them of for you. So the scene with Nicks brother was very personal to me when I read it for the first time and I think I felt seen for the first time ever. I'm glad they did the scene justice, as will the follow up be😂. No spoilers though🙊. Anyhow, if anyone is still reading and wanting a conclusion to the story above, I don't remember what I did after that exactly, but I think I told him to his face the next time he was saying something like that, that it was very biphobic and he shouldn't do that. Whatever I actualy said, he hasn't said anything of that effect since (that was like 4 years ago) and there were plenty of occasions to say it. Later I found out he came out quite late and I was out and about for twice as long as him. Still a nice guy and a great coworker, just needed to do some growing I think.

Charlie's mum was in my opinion being a bit too strict, however i dont really blame her for her reaction. After that parents night were multiple teachers told them he was losing focus, slipping behind, distracted and turning up late for classes I'm not surprise that they decided to set down some ground rules. Wih regards to the grounding this was the 2nd time that Charlie had openly defied the boundries set down by his parents. At the end of the day he is only 15 and at a particularly stressful time in his school life where he needs to be focusing on his work and not being distracted. Also he was only originally banned from seeing Nick until he finished his history coursework he only ended up being grounded due to disobeying his parents rules. If he had just knuckled down for a day or so he could have finished his essay and his mum would have been fine with his seeing Nick again as long as he didn't get too distracted. I think Charlie's parents are worried about him, after all they have accepted his sexuality but that doesht mean tht they haven't had to learn a load of new stuff due to there son being gay, they also will be very aware of how awful and torturous the last year was for him with all the bullying ad other associated stuff. This is also the first time they have been confronted with the idea of there 15 year old son having a boyfriend and I'm sure that is a lot to take in especially after the trauma of the last year and the fact that at a surface level Nick does seem to have more in common with the sporty laddish types who bullied Charlie than with his usual friend group. I dont think his mum is homophobic not really just surprised and blindsighted by the news that Nick is her son's boyfriend and there is also the fact that they have been alone in Charlie's room with the door shut so often which i know my parents would never have allowed when i was a kid. Also i do agree that making new friends as you grow is an important step in life, there is no rule that says you have to just forget your previous friends. Elle can make new friends and broaden her horizons but she doesn't have to leave Tau and the others behind, I have numerous friends from different walks of life but my two best friends in the world are two people I have known for most of my life since school. It is however going to be great for Elle to meet another trans person who can relate to the journey she is taking throughout her life, however it did make me laugh when you suggested her friend group could be more diverse considering that her closest friends are already two lesbians one straight man a gay man and a bisexual and possibly an asexual person if the hints througout the series are indeed correct. I would have killed to have a friend group like that at my all boys catholic senior school in Liverpool. Great reaction as ever guys, sorry about the essay length comment 😅, I guess this series just makes me think and want to talk about these wonderful characters, although you are 100 percent right about David he is a proper knob and i hate how h tries to undermine Nick's identity just because he is to emotionally stunted to accept having a bi brother.

You have a very adult thought about relationships but as a teenager it was easy to lose yourself by being fully upset in your relationship. I think it’s realistic and reasonable for teens.

I have one of the same mental health disorders Charlie has and when I was at it’s worse I went from all As and Bs to getting fs because I was so depressed and anxious all the time. I had to get homeschooled for a couple of years. Lucky I started up at a high school and ended up being valediction and getting straight As after I got help for my mental illness. So I relate to Charlie falling behind in school.

Alex may seem dramatic about charlies mom, but he has a point. Grades arent everything, ever. There needs to be actual communication to form boundaries. Teens deserve that.

Especially when Tao was only just starting high school when he died. Starting high school is already stressful because you're saying goodbye to some people you knew before and have to make new friends and along with his dad dying, it's no wonder he grew so attached to Charlie and Elle, who he met when he started high school.

I can’t stand Jane. She doesn’t even considers Charlie in the conversation about his school life. Yes, Charlie should focus on his school and he should learn how to balance his personal and school life. Imposing a complete ban, instead of putting healthy boundaries and actually talking to your son about it is bad parenting. She doesn’t even listen to Charlie and puts all the blame on Nick when Nick is only one of the factors in Charlie’s school life. He just came out of a year of relentless and aggressive bullying, he struggles with his mental health, his mother is cold and doesn’t even interact with him. Of course he is distracted by Nick, he is happy for once. Like, genuinely happy and after his past year it’s normal for him to cling onto his happiness. She ignores her husband’s input in regards of Charlie, she ignores Charlie and impose what she feel is right, how Tori has to take on the role of Charlie’s protector all the time is also very telling of how bad she is at being a mother. Charlie’s father isn’t any better but at least he is shown being protective, caring about Charlie and interested in his life like when in season 1 he made sure that Charlie was ok when he took him to Harry’s party and to the Cinema and reassured him that for whatever he needed him he would be there

15:00 I don‘t understand why Nick doesn‘t just tell her „He assaulted someone“ - he would not have to tell any details because he also wouldn‘t if it was a girl and she just doesn‘t want that people know about her because assaults are still something uncomfortable to talk about.

I think many people forget to account for events that the audience doesn't see - Charlie's mom witnessed him being bullied and has an extra level of worry. Also, it seems like he must have maintained his good grades even while being bullied, so them slipping now, would be troubling to any good parent. Jack Barton - playing David - is phenomenal and completely different from the first character I saw him as in The Letter For The King!! Alex, I would love to be Farouked all day long!
