When the 4K came out and early reviews said the picture quality was underwhelming and the audio is unchanged from the blu ray, I went out and bought the BD for $7.

I only have a 4k collection… wanting best quality was a reason… limiting the number of movies available for purchase was another. Blu-ray as an option would lead to s problems for me haha

I think that the ideal transfer of "Heat" for me would be somewhere right in between the 2017 blu-ray and new 4K UHD disc. The older bluray has the contrast dialed up a bit too much in a few scenes for my taste whereas the 4K UHD dialed that aspect back a bit too much in addition to darkening things overall for a more "cinematic" feel. Overall though I still prefer the 2017 bluray. I still feel that the 4K UHD is perfectly watchable but I think the darker feel takes aways from the movie a bit at least for my taste.

To me no matter how they upgraded I will only collect those really good and classic films. The joy of comparison is our hobby 😊 Heat is definitely one of the classic and best from michael mann !

Like you, I have had the film in every format, beginning with LaserDisc. I was somewhat disappointed by the darkness in several scenes on the 4K disc but, as you said, this was Michael Mann’s decision. That said, this is one of the truly great thrillers. The scene in the diner between Pacino and De Niro is right up there with the cab scene in “On the Waterfront.”

I have my UHD delivered yesterday, I remember being in LA and seeing shooting locations of Heat, they put signs up to tell you this as well which is cool 😁

If any of your Blu-rays are brighter than your 4K’s, you’re doing HDR wrong and should get your TV calibrated. SDR should always be 100 nits.

@@Music.Movies.67 it’s because your TV isn’t calibrated properly, or Netflix hasn’t encoded it properly. But anything HDR will be a lot brighter than an SDR image. The bottom line is most people have been watching SDR content way too bright. It’s supposed to be 100 nits. Turn down the brightness.

I'm glad I got it, but even if it's a director's intent, the screen is still a little too dark. I'm just glad it came with both 4k and Blu-ray disks.

Transfer does look a tad dark, but pretty easily overcome with some adjustments on my LG OLED. My wife had never seen the film and she thought it looked perfect.

The transfer is a little dark, but with some slight tweaks of my settings I got it to look just about perfect. I've got a Sony A80J, and I just switched it from Gradation Preferred to Brightness preferred, with the Black Level set to 49, and that did the trick. It retains the pure blacks while brightening up everything else just a bit.

Thanks for weighing in on this on Adam. No issues with the transfer here either; critical that its viewed in a dark room though. It seems likely that Mann was targeting a theatrical HDR grade here (dolby cinema being 108 nits). I have noticed that filmmakers often get some backlash when they try bringing the cinema look to a home video presentation. Tarantino, Nolan and his raised black levels etc. A lot of people think every image needs to "pop" and smack them in the face or they got cheated somehow. Have to remind them that HDR is simply a box of tools that be utilized to varying degrees by the artist...it' doesn't mean everything have to be juiced to the gillz.

I recently bought the directors definitive edition on blu ray for £6,after hearing the 4K version being a little dark. I’m very happy with it.

I'm glad there is a thin layer of grain and the image is not tampered with dnr or edge enhancement in the 4k. Happy to have this steelbook

I looked at and directly compared screenshots of the 2017 remastered Blu Ray and this new 4K disc. I am completely aware that a screenshot can NOT display HDR with full accuracy of course, but I still just didn't like the look and weird tinting that I saw on the 4K screenshots, and I prefer the 2017 Blu Ray better. I'm going to have to do some more research and such in deciding which to buy, but I think I will probably end up going with the 2017 Blu Ray.

Thank God I have watched these reviews on KZbin. It’s saved me £20 from upgrading. It’s a shame it’s received some poor treatment. A lot of my favourite movies seem to be getting bad remasters. Just remember though… “SHE’S GOT A GREAT ASS!!”

Yes, it’s hard to unsee how dark the 4K disc is.. A review/comment said it’s as if looking with sunglasses on, this is exactly correct. It’s so annoying, and unnecessary. The photography is so valuable, such a shame to dim it! It makes everything harder to see.

Received it yesterday on 4K UHD, watching it right now, 20 minutes in and I agree with other's that it's far to dark, on other disc's black levels are great and the colours pop but with Heat it's very bland, like watching it through sunglasses, definitely stick with the older blu-ray, watched the DVD not so long ago and I enjoyed it way more.

I love this film . Unpopular opinion but I think The Town is a better film. Heat has a better cast but The Town has more character development for me and more emotional impact. Just my two cents.

Of the 1080P Blu-rays of Heat, which is the best one? I don't remember liking the movie when I saw it a couple times on VHS back in the day, but I'm willing to give it another shot. Not sure I want to spend $40 on the 4K and never watch again (like so many discs I have). They have various versions of the regular Blu-ray for like $5.99 at my local used physical media store. Don't know which one to buy.

This is a controversial disc with so many reviewers bashing the dark tint. Even though Michael Mann himself went back and made it darker in 2017 but the revisionist cries are out there so it's hard to pick a side here.

It seems it was made additionally darker, even more than all previous versions. Bummer. Not hard to pick sides. Dimming this movie, was a mistake. It didn’t need dimming. If a scene or scenes are blown out, too hot/bright, then correct them-that’s fine. But to apply it to the whole film? No. Mostly no one, watched Heat and thought, this movie-is too bright- it needs to be dimmed.

Heat was a favorite film of mine. Michael Mann’s cinematography paired with Pacino and DeNiro was outstanding and fun for a cat and mouse crime drama. However, I find it quite remarkable the choice for the female companionship in the film. I mean I wonder how the feel of the film would have changed if perhaps DeNiro’s love interest was some wicked BIMBO instead of the rather interesting female cast in the role who was very “civilian.” I can’t remember but I think Kilmer had the hottest woman. Was it Ashley Judd or Charlize Theron. Can’t remember. She didn’t get too much screen time. The wardrobe choices were great too.

4K Heat is low in contrast giving a milky image. The film is sharp but could have had richer blacks. It’s a masterwork for a more mature audience.

C- The picture is far too dark - got a refund for my disc. I'll keep my blu-ray. People say the original DVD version has the best color plate of all formats. Disney put your hands in your pocket to produce better 4ks or license out the right to smaller companies like arrow or lino.

@@MovieGuy365 we've got very similar Tv's ,I own LG CX, with perfectly calibrated picture settings ,and Heat looks WAY too dark on my Tv, the overall transfer isn't bad ,just the HDR implementation is a huge miss, I honestly do not believe that Michael Mann had anything to do with how the 4K looks.
