The original blu-ray is also stellar too. The Director's Definitive Edition BD this time isn't a new cut, it's just been colour coded differently and some of the audio lowered (plus it has a few more extras). I wasn't going to buy it again just because Mann prefers the colours to be a bit different. It's Dolby TrueHD on the first blu-ray and DTS-HD MA on the re-release but they're both lossless so. They're all the same slightly edited Theatrical Cut.

It already has a great 4k release. This guy is not a pro, just look how good reviews it got from the bluray website and others. I don't agree with him at all. The 4k version is way better than the blu ray. If people actually had a high end player they wouldn't trash the movie being to dark. On some of the high end Panasonic players you can adjust brightness much higher up to 4 levels. And when I say brighness I don't mean in overall brightness, it's pure HDR, so black levels remain just as black and only the HDR colors are brightened up

I just finished watching it and yes, it's pretty dark and it took me about 15 minutes to get used to it, but I have to say I was very happy with the picture. Great detail and grain structure. It really looks like film. If this is now Mann's preferred brightness and color timing, who am I to argue? Outstanding transfer. Can't wait to watch it again soon.

Not sure about other players, but the Panasonics have a setting to increase the HDR brightness of the image to the TV. This is really useful for films that are either dimly mastered or the highlights don't go particularly bright.

My go-to version remains the 2009 Blu-ray from Warner: you have more picture in the frame, you have the original distributor logo opening it and, although it's already dull and monochromatic as it's always been on video, all you need to do is increase color saturation on your display to nearly recover the original color timing as seen on 35mm prints from 1995 so you can relive the theater experience... or close to it.

For the DV missing part, maybe the digital copy may have it? Most of my hdr only UHD Blu-ray’s usually redeem into Apple TV with DV, in most cases….if this transfer isn’t that great, then I’m hoping the Ronin uhd is better when it comes out, love that De Niro movie too, car chases etc…think it releases in fall or winter. I’ll keep my Heat pre order, prob still look better than Goodfellas…

@@pboissie I’ll just buy it on Apple TV if it comes out on DV on it (Done it was a few films where the UHD Blu Ray TF’s haven’t been great) I like the 4K remastered Blu Rays anyway. Disappointing as I’ve been looking forward to the 4K coming out for a year after the first delay. Heats a film where you need the best possible transfer for the dark scenes. Loved Jeff’s comment about it being like an Instagram Filter. Fed up with studios releasing classics that are aren’t the best quality. The Boutiques do it a lot better now given the chance - DV, better extras etc

Quick update, got my Heat 4k disc today, and to me its terrible. That dark filter look is really bad, ive never seen a 4k disc with HDR look this dark and dull with horrible contrast. Im going to see if i can return this to amazon. The bluray definitely has to look better than this, what were they thinking? Edit: the stream on apple tv is what looked worse which i tested first (digital copy from disc). The 4k disc is much better overall, but still is somewhat darker than your typical hdr 4k disc, but the disc with extra sharp image helps offset that. And since most people watch movies in a dark room setting, that helps offset that alot too. Still somewhat dissappointed in the hdr on this ofcourse…

I owned 3 copies of "Heat" (1995)! Two DVDs (Single Barebones and a Two Disc Special Edition) and a 2017 Blu-ray (Definitive Director's Teal Edition). Judging by the 4K release, it's just the same 4K scan teal filter as before and a little darker. Still edited down to 170 minutes out of 2 minutes from the original theatrical release, sound mix with tinny dialogue and long blasting shootouts and explosions. Maybe down the road when the price drops, I might get it. As of now, I'm fine with my previous copies.

I did Buy the 4k 3 disc steel book edition of HEAT. It is my faviroute movie and I like so many others have waited so very long for it to be released on 4k. I have the 2017 Bluray edition copy. I agree that the 4K is very dark. But personally it did not upset, bother, or distract me from the enjoyment of watching the movie. However I can completely understand if many other fans of the movie were left disappointed in the 4K transfer. The overall improvement to the film the 4K makes upon the Bluray is certainly an upscale in many areas. The movie is 100% awesome. Is the 4k an essential must buy for the collection: The answer is: No. The Bluray is more than fine.

Heat is one of my all time top 20 movies. Watched the 4K last night and wow, underwhelming to say the least. Very disappointed in the PQ. The Blu Ray from a few years ago easily bests this release. 3.5/5

I picked up that same definitive blu ray version about a year ago at my local Best Buy, it was about 5 to 8 dollars if i remember correctly but it didn't come with the slip cover. Nonetheless it's the same version. I noticed at the time how great the image looked but i was more impressed with the audio. The quiet moments were audible yet super clear while the loud action moments were perfectly boomy, punchy and in-your-face sounding. Based on what i heard and watched from the blu ray, i had a feeling the 4K disc wasn't going to have much of an upgrade and unfortunately i might have been correct. That's why i hold off on just impulse buying most 4K disks and only pick up or preorder the ones i really want. The only ones i want to pick up soon are the Godfather part 1 and 2 steelbooks and the Return of the Living Dead.

When you go into Blu-Ray, and you go to 4K, you’re in a different color space. Meaning that what was magenta doesn’t translate exactly. There’s no logarithm you could use to make “magenta” still stay magenta, with that exact color. So you have to imagine everything, from contrast, to how black blacks are, to what the color palette is. The ambition here was: If I was shooting the film two or three years ago, what would it look like? That was really it. So we went into every shot.”

I have seen 4Ks that look identical to the original film prints and negatives, and these were all done before logarithms ever existed. 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Ten Commandments, and Singin’ In The Rain are but a few of the rather large pool. And none of them look like they were shot 3 years ago, they look like restored versions of the original films as they were decades ago. Talking stupid to smart people doesn’t work, it just lets us know that the speaker doesn’t respect us.

BTW - thanks for talking about the BD-100 discs. That explains the issues I've had in the past with Halloween and Hobbit. My player is Sony BDP-x700. Disc will lock up and I just eject it, close tray and reload , then works fine.

Love this movie; anxious to watch the new 4K HDR and see how often I just go back to 4K 1080. The problem is the movie is a dark blue and black tone anyway and since HDR uses the brightest brights and darkest darks it doesn’t go over well with a film very shaded and dark set anyway so that’s where I feel they go wrong sometimes . All that being said that shootout in 4K was something else man 👌

I am curious has your TV been calibrated? I work in a post facility and we had two online bays that had identical TVs. I believe they were LGs and they were advertised as being "ready out of the box". They hired someone come in to calibrate them and the from the baseline test both TVs were significantly different. I've thought about having my TVs at home calibrated but I find that I have to adjust the settings on just about every movie. I also thought about painting the walls 18% gray like the online bays at the office but I don't think that would make that big of a difference. It seems like Blu-Rays are more consistent across the board than 4K disk, 4k discs are hit or miss for me. I find it odd that this did not get a bad review for being too dark but memories of murder did and they have the same problem. Let me know what you think!

@@JeffRauseo I will say this though, it’s intentionally blue and gray *now*. It wasn’t always like that. For proof, track down a bootleg recording from theaters. While it will look terrible, you’ll see that it wasn’t always blue and gray, it used to look (at least in terms of color) like the WB Blu-ray.

If u want to buy the movie I recommend watching the 2017 Director's Definitive Edition which is only on blu ray that u can find on this 4k release set or the 2017 blu ray set. I saw the movie for the first time on that version and it's beautiful and makes it look like it came out in 2005 or 2006

Most reviews are saying similar. It's disappointing but I don't have Heat on any format, only saw it on VHS back in the 90s...ya I'm old so I'll pick this up, didnt realise it was a friggin Disney disk.

Any clarification on how the color grade was done? Was it done by fox or Disney? was Mann involved? I know the lack of Dolby Vision / HRD10+ certainly suggests Disney's unwanted hand involved

I’m working on more clarification on that. Mann did the color timing for the Blu-ray. But no idea who did the HDR grading.

Just bought it on AMA for $7.99. I like the fact that you break out the audio from the video. I replace my movies based on the ATMOS as much as the P.Q.

Make sure 4K BR player has Dolby Vision “off”. This disk is HDR10. Once I turned off DV, disc doesn’t look overly dark. Dark “filter” look gone after that.

Bummer that the 4K transfer isn't all that great. Was really looking forward to this after years of delays. Good thing I still got my Definitive Edition Blu-ray. Thanks for the review and saving me $25. Damn you Disney!

I still think of Heat as a Warner Bros. Movie. I know Heat was a Regency pictures movie and they were on the Fox lot before the Disney purchase.

Some of the guys one of my Facebook group about HD movies is really cutting down this review and saying the reviewer is a joke and has no idea what he (you) are taking about.
