Great to know the side of Adam we didn’t know. Inspiring 👏

Really enjoyed that, you have a new subscriber! Adam has made a stir in the heating industry, fascinating to see a window into him as a person and what he has to say. “Air con guys are intelligent plumbers “. Pahahahaha😂 Let the banter begin, sparkies were light work

The longevity discussions are interesting. Throwing a fridge freezer and a car into that mix would also be interesting. Looking at 2013 fridge in the kitchen. Expecting it to still work in 2033. Scrap if anything breaks. Looking at a 2009 Volvo. Expecting it to still work in 2029. Readily repairable if anything breaks. It's not the biggest fire yet for heat pumps - industry still struggling to get the initial installs right at scale before worrying too much about the afterlife - but it's definitley a concern as a prospective buyer and a reason to be choosing a Vaillant / Viessmann / Nibe type product (made from a resaonably locally available bucket of bits; with an oem that's invested in the sector) over and above this week's parts bin special that's imported by the container directly no name vendors whose products are updated every year rather than every decade. Will they prove as reassuringly boring as fridges and Volvos? Or will they prove about as safe, reliable, and long lived as AliExpress e-bike batteries? I'll fit a decade old Swedish made fixed speed Copeland Scroll based ground source unit that's already got 10,000 hours on it and a €600 Midea split and see how it turns out...

Predicting the future. The 'International Energy Agency', IEA have pointed out that globally the additions of gas power plants peaked in 2002 and sales of gas boilers peaked in 2020. As more people start to trust that they will be able to get their central heating system renovate to run cheaply and efficiently with a heat pump, by hiring competent persons, combustion will loose popularity. If the taxation of gas and electricity gets equal per amount of energy (or by CO2 emissions), the economic difference gives heat pumps installed to run as efficient as possible a benefit.

The ‘copy paste’ narrative they were talking about is often known as crate cult thinking, I’m in software engineering and it’s common for those who don’t understand to just copy something because it works over there… but not understanding what they are copying well enough to make the best of the technology. It’s a huge problem on engineering, and understanding why is super important, interesting to see the same problem in other industries.

I like what heatgeek promote and intend to apply as much of what they teach into my self build install. But i have two issues/concerns. 1. Following heatgeeks own videos on comparing a highly efficient gas boiler 90% vs an ashp scop 4, the running costs based on my accurate heat loss survey, the saving was only £220 per year. The higher price of an ashp service in my area means half of that saving is lost, so over 10 years it would be £1100 saved. 2. I'd like to install an ashp, but the £7500 grant is being absorbed by the installer and not received by the home owner and it feels corrupt. To have an ashp fitted to a new build plant room only, the quotes for parts and labour was 16 to 18 grand vs a gas boiler at just under 10 grand. £8000 difference. Yes i would be eligble for a £7500 grant to bring the ashp price down to lets say 10 grand matching the gas install, but both installs were 5 to 6 days work. The ashp and components are around 3k more than gas, that that should make the total 13k, not up to 18k. When questioning why the quotes are so high, I'm told that the MCS grant paperwork takes up so much time that they need to charge more, or, it needs to cover all the training costs for the ashp and if you dont like it then fit it yourself, you do the training, we will simply find customers who will pay 18k and recognise our worth. This seems like a poor attitude. Any installer also has to pay for their gas training but each customer shouldnt cover the cost of all the installers training on each job. This is clean new build, plant room only install and not a huge job.

My thoughts exactly.. not with heat geek, but in general. AIR TO AIR FOR THE WIN :)
