Remember, the alarms and cameras at the bank were turned off 20 minutes before they walked in the door. That was what they were doing in the parking garage the night before after they dumped their surveillance. Cutting into the bank's security system. So Chris not having his mask on while beating up the security guard or Neil and Mike putting their masks on a few minutes in didn't matter. There would be no security footage. The only reason the police even showed up to the bank was off a tip from Hugh Benny (Henry Rollins) on behalf of Van Sant because of Waingro. The bank's alarms never went off. And the take was 12 to 13 million. Go back and watch the scene with Kelso (Tom Noonan), the guy with the huge beard in the wheelchair that Neil bought the bank score from. A lot of really important information in that scene.

The paradox of Michael Mann's protagonists, and what makes his films so compelling, is his men operate at the highest possible level of tradecraft expertise while demonstrating a disturbing lack of emotional intelligence. The gap between those two dimensions - Thief, Heat, The Insider, Collateral - is why you go back to these films again and again.

Class reaction lads. I saw this when it came out at the cinema. The shootout on a pro sound system was deafening. There is a TV movie that came out in 2003 with Michael Madson called "44 Minutes: The North Hollywood Shoot-Out". It is done in a docu/drama style and is based on the true story and I think you will all love it as it is real live Heat. I remember the news at the time on British television showing these guys in a gunfight with the LA fuzz and it was crazy.

People always go on about John Wick's action scenes, which I do love, but Michael Mann had already made some of the best shootouts in this and Collateral like a full decade before JW was even a concept. My favorite bit of lore is that Val Kilmer's reloads and movement in this are used to bully marine or seals; "If you can't reload and get back on target as fast as this actor, you suck and should quit." Val Kilmer had a really great run of films in here with like heat, The Doors, Tombstone, it always baffled my why he never went big, big. I have seen this movie so many times I never need to watch it again but I love the excuse of watching it with the MMM crew. Nice to see it still hits even though it is rather old at this point. When I was kid if you watched a movie from like 20-30y before it was borderline if you would even relate to it.
@SeanTanktop7 ай бұрын
yeah, and a lot less fantasy horseshit. this feels WAY more real. You watch the HEAT behind the scenes and DeNiro and Kilmer are doing ALMOST exactly the field training that Keanu did, all due respect, but didn't have the internet to falate them over it.

A+ for me, too-one of my all time favorite films. Doesn't seem too long-if they cut anything from this, I feel like the whole would suffer...it's like a perfect meal, every ingredient was necessary. It has it all: tenderness, trauma, visceral thrills, understated moodiness, brief moments of carefree revelry, and such economy of dialogue (no unnecessary blah blah). Got to watch on video, a guy take a pre-hung door (so a door in the frame), and just walk right thru a cashier isle, and out the door, Nobody stopped him, nobody addressed him. If you walk with a purpose, everyone assumes you know what your doing and its all solid. Pacino is Major Case detective. A lieutenant, Armored car Robberies Bank Robberies. I watch these reactions and learn that people really think every Police Officer is alike, THERE NOT. I have a family full of Cops going back 40 years. When the first guy on the end started talking about the scene where Pacino stopped the Officer from running after a Major Criminals for breaking and entering. With a Paid Lawyer that 3 years best. Major Crimes is 20+ Life or Death Row. That job is for patrol officers not a Detective. Even if a Cop sees a petty crime and doesn't admittedly call it in there are reasons. First location, every area is assigned to a particular and a rule in enforcement: Don't step on other Cops. Many things can happen just trying to help.
