Acro Silky died around the late 80's so her daughter if she is still alive ( Sadly doubt it) would be in her mid 40's . This episode is depressing especially if you're a single mother with a daughter like I am. It just wrecked me emotionally was not good for a whole day after watching this episode 😭😭

This episode is such a massive emotional and tonal whiplash compared to rest of the show to that point. Could not have been less prepared. Found it deeply affecting. I ugly cried intermittently all night after first seeing it. Not usually huge on anime. I enjoy it, but usually in a kind of ironic way (I default to comedies). Acro-Silky's backstory is antithetical to my general feelings towards anime and manga, and has opened my awareness of just how impressive anime can be as a story-telling medium. I generally find it hard to empathize with the over-stylized settings and characters in most anime productions. For me, this is often an interest killer; if I can't empathize with characters, I have difficulty liking them, and no likeable characters means I end up not caring. This episode's Silky micro-narrative is a masterclass in creating and then reinforcing empathy in the audience; they utilize gritty, raw, and believable motifs so that the audience feels what Silky feels: the exhaustion, the indignity, the daily grind, the confusion, the despair, the physical pain, and also the love/bond. This is of course in addition to the impressive animation techniques, and a fantastic score. Then, when the gritty story is largely concluded, they have the breathtaking dancing/suicide scene: they return to a stylized and magisterial presentation, but retain the motifs (and thus, empathy) from the preceding memories. It's a stunning crescendo that pays off the audience for becoming emotionally invested. I can't help but notice the similarities between Silky's story and the archetypal imagery of a rape victim's recovery of their dignity, body, agency, and identity. Silky, has been metaphorically raped (and probably actually raped: single mother, sex worker owned by pimps/loan-sharks, no social safety net): her suicide is at once morbid, but also gorgeously arresting; at her lowest point, resigned to death, she appears her most powerful and beautiful. The imagery is ethereal: her feet gently float impossibly into frame; the city lights blend into the sky; she appears to literally be dancing on water (just fallen rain, but striking nonetheless). It is one of the most earned stylized moments I've ever seen in anime, or even animation for that matter.

Season 1 Episode: Pain. Yeah that's what the title of the episode truly is. BTW, you may learn something that every "yokai" or vengeful spirit in DDD has tragic back story of their lives and deaths that leads them to who they are. They basically normal human, it's just that they happened had some "unfinished business" before they died. Meanwhile, the aliens in DDD is the real bad guys. Well.. not all tho.

Sad to say, unfortunately the manga (and more subtly the anime) leave it clear that the little girl also passed away. Given what those men did, you can imagine horrible life they forced her to have. That's why Aira prays for BOTH of them to go to a kinder place. The girl is also gone. 😢

craziest part is the backstory ain't more than 10 pages of silent drawings which could've been adapted into at best 3-4mins of story but the production team took insane creative freedom & yet showed respect to such a delicate matter..... this episode killed all my fears about "how will DANDADAN get adapted as an anime"

Aira is AcroSilky’s daughter and AceoSilky is Aira’s mother, which it was. Both have closure. Both went to better world, AcroSilky went to afterlife met her own daughter and Aira got isekai’d to Dandadan from her own world.

SO MUCH said in little details, like the ballet shoes was too big for the kid, cause the mother doesn't had the money to buy the actual size. And in the hotel where she wakes up, there's opened preservatives near the bad and in the trash. And the frame rate of the animation in the flashback is different to give a sense of reality. Great directing!

@@iczzephyr It's worth watching if you like trippy fight your trauma literally and character interactions. And just weirdness, lots of weirdness. But it is not for everyone I'd say. I'd rate it 7/10, you can give it the ole 3 episode trial tho

@@iczzephyrit could have been an all timer but they botched the ending really badly, its a clover works studio production and they developed a reputation for doing that thanks to darling in the franxx, this, and promised neverland season 2 which all came out within the span of a few years... i would honestly say its still worth watching just for the stuff that was initially good at the beginning though, just be ready for a sharp decline right at the end
