First off, keep up the great work! Second, just wanted to add a few tidbits you might find useful. For a defrost board to engage defrost, you need to make sure that your 24 volt R has power to board. I've come across Trane and Carrier heat pumps that will not defrost without board power. Also, if you want to check a Carrier heat pump defrost cycle quickly, just remove the pink defrost stat from board, jump the 2 defrost pins with a gator clip and then short the speedup pins 7 seconds for every 30 minutes of defrost timing. Defrost will run until gator clip is removed and plug reinstalled to board. Works the same with the 2 brown DF terminals on a Lennox heat pump. NC winters can get cold and during service calls/PM's, it's good to know that the board will operate when it is needed. Side note, shorting the speedup terminals on normal operation for Carrier reduces the needed runtime to 1/25th of its original time.

Bryan I thoroughly enjoy & learn from everyone of your videos. You mentioned though that a piston can't increase pressure. I'm only bringing this up because I have gone back to some Carrier units (side discharge condensers mostly) where previous techs diagnosed & changed txv's, so called restricted evaporator coils & I've found that the piston was installed backwards on the heat pump. The head pressure is always high & subcooling all over the place. So now as common practice myself I test tempature before & after piston before I even start diagnosing a txv. Your already outside & right there. Basically a piston can increase pressure if not installed properly. Just 1 more quick check to perform before opening a can of worms.

Great info. I wish a small vignette about zone systems would've been mentjoned; I've dealt with a dual fuel, zoned system that I was concerned did not have correct settings in staging, but I think it's issue was with having no supply air sensor, hence not able to shut off the compressor when the temp got too high, thus causing less heat rejection, putting higher strain on the system, and it was blowing compressors and breaking open places on the indoor coil.

Another alternative to jumping out the defrost thermostat to test defrost cycle is to kill power to condenser, pull condenser fan wire from defrost board fan relay, restore power. Coil will become cold enough to close defrost thermostat within one minute. Initiate test pins, kill power again after defrost cycle starts, plug fan wire back in, restore power again and wait for it to exit defrost cycle.

Worked on a nordyne today with a piston in the expansion line(just like carrier)and the acoil wasn't warm in heat mode and had high suction pressure. Took the piston apart cleared a restriction, some tiny metal 3 pieces, pulled a good vacuum and weighed in factory charged and boom back running good

So if your unit has a heating txv you can check your pressures at common suction and liquid port? Because I have always been told to check my pressures at common suction and vapor line in heating mode with my gauges. P.S I am a huge fan and supporter of your podcast and KZbin videos. I’m new to the tech side but I been an installer and also gas installer for 20 years. And I have ocd really bad and I want to make sure I’m doing the job correctly because I have a fear of making a mistake. Thank you for your help, time and advice

I find the 100-110 over ambient is highly variable just like the condensor dtd. What drives discharge temp? Mass flow and suction superheat. On carrier units with piston I find much lower suction pressure and higher superheat than with unit with outdoor txv that is able to give higher mass flow and lower superheat across the board. The outdoor TXV equipped unit will have lower discharge temp.

A lot of systems have wonky readings because the evap coil is sized more for a.c then heat and the evap coil is alot smaller than a condenser coil so being the condenser in heat mode it builds a higher differential than normal sometimes.

Tell Bert to chill out on his dirty equipment inputs. But I loose interest when I hear it over and over. The home owners are not watching this, hvac techs are watching. We know that the system will not operate correctly if the coils are dirty. I bet this could have been a 45 minute video. I stopped watching after 25 minutes because my time is valuable. After I take a break I might finish watching.

This is super late to respond to, but as obnoxious as it to hear the same thing over and over again, he’s entirely justified repeating it and I appreciate it. If you work solo then you probably don’t have to deal with it, but 1000% if you work in a company with multiple techs there will be a tech that disregards the importance of having a clean system before testing and it can be costly both in time and parts. You obviously understand this. But you also have to be clued into the fact that there are MANY MANY techs that don’t take this part serious enough. He could’ve said it 8 more times and there will still be those who watch the video and disregard it AS TECHS. not trying to argue, but this is an educational channel. You learn by having things repeated.
