My Grundig heat pump dryer has stopped heating up. I learned more from this 15 minute video than the last 6-8 hours of research and talking to "experts", who all told me to press the reset switch on my heater. You are spot on these machines are basically Dehumidifiers enclosed within a metal box incoperating a drum . I worked for Ebac a major dehumidifier manufacturer and we produced over 20 years ago a drying tent. Basically a breathable material that fitted over a clothes horse with a dehumidifier enclosed, effectively these heat dry pump dryers are the same, but with many more components and yes to go wrong especially the tower style compressors within these machine that tend to become very noisy. Condenser and evaporator coils are notorious for getting clogged up with dirt. So if you're not competent in dismantling your dryer then its wise to buy a warranty . I was tempted in buying one of these heat pump dryers, but after watching numourous vids I'll stick with a heat dryer instead. So if you have your dryer within a garage or cold area a heat pump dryer is not for you.

This is an excellent video with many nuggets of knowledge. I've used this to look at my Hoover heat pump dryer. The symptoms are not heating so I suspected that the heat exchangers were clogged with fluff. Sadly this was not the case, they are nice and clean. Measuring the 2 refrigerant lines where they go into the heat exchanger housing, I get 48 degC and 18 degC after about 5 minutes. The compressor is working and drawing about the same power (450W) as a working dryer. All I can imagine is that I have a low gas charge or a blockage in the refrigerant line somewhere. I guess that it is beyond economical repair at this point 😞.

This video has been eye-opening. Been looking at these heat-pump tumble dryers for a while. I knew that they used less energy and lower temperatures than vented and condensing types, but had no idea the temps inside were so low. Was looking through all the spec sheets on these A+++ dryers and many were quoting 2-4 hours for a full cotton load and I couldn't figure out exactly why. Seeing this explains it all, really.

Great video thanks, there's not enough from actual manufacturers of these products explaining some of the facts and maintenance issues with these heat pump dryers! Any ideas on what could cause the evaporator in mine to start getting warm after about 45 minutes of running? It is definetely cold to touch initially then definetely starts getting warm and it just keeps running and the drying process never seems to complete, as it's just circulating hot steamy air with no dehumidifing going on. It's a 5yr old Samsung heat pump btw. Thanks!

Hi Jason, just bought a Whirlpool hp dryer and it worked fine for two weeks. Then the drum stopped turning mid cycle. Compressor kept running and the cycle kept timing out. After r a 20 minute pause, the drum resumed turning and the cycle, which had continued counting down, timed out. Clothes were not unsurprisingly still wet. Whirlpool service found no faults but the machine had been unplugged for over a week. The machine did not fail when service was here and they pronounced it fine and further said drum stoppage like this is normal and left. it has performed several cycles since uninterrupted. I noticed the pump had a very weak and erratic stream when emptying and thought maybe an erratic float or poor pump performance might have stimulated the drum stoppage although service said the entire machine would shut down in that case. Without and elementary diagram or ladder logic, I have no way of diagnosing what conditions would hold the drum motor relay out but still allow the compressor to run. ,

Thank you very much, I do not speak English but I managed to translate the video by subtitles. I needed this data because here in Spain these dryers have many leaks when I repair the leak I do not know how much gas to load, since the r134 is not loaded with an ecological substitute. Ask a thermometer do you put it in the filter and the other where you install it? Most dryers have a probe at the outlet of the condenser. You could make a study of that temperature when it is critical. excuse my English

Jason, great video with explanation, thanks! I have LG hybrid which has been taking 6hrs to dry, even after that the clothes are still not adequately dry. I have to put the dryer on another couple of time to get it dried. I have another problem, whenever I put it on Turbo(speed) mode, after a couple of minutes the dryer stops with "The duct or lint filter is clogged" error. If I switch the dryer off and on again and put it on hybrid I do not get the error but as I said it is taking far too long to dry. I have stripped the dryer, the only fluff I had was behind the drum at the back, but the heat exchange and fan (attached to the motor with plastic fins) was not covered in fluff. I then checked the ohms readings on heating element, thermistor and thermostat, they are working. I then replaced the main circuit board. The problem remains the same. Do you think the problem is with the compressor? I need to get a digital thermometer (is there one you would recommend?)and do the tests you have suggested. Again, I can't thank you enough for the video!

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I have a Beko heat pumped tumble dryer that is now taking forever to dry clothes. There is little or no water collected in the tank, but I do get it condensing in front of the exchange filter and drips onto the floor. My guess is that the evaporator is not getting cold, but it is still generating heat. I have stripped it down and checked for fluff blockages, but it is quite clean. Would this be a case where it has lost gas, and if so, where does it lose it from? looking at the pipework, it all looks sealed. Also, can you get these re-gassed, or is it a case of buy a new one? Thanks again .

I don't know if could help me, but I have a Samsung heat pump tumble dryer, that one day stopped drying the clothes. after a thorough research online, I took everything down and cleaned the condenser into my shower. put everything back, and now, I have the clothes completely dry but, there is no water being condensed. Not a single drop of water. the compressor is extremely hot afterwards and takes hours to cool down. I tested the compressor's fan itself, and it is functioning, tested the thermostat that goes into the compressor and it is functioning. I don't know what is happening. Could it be a leak of refrigerant? if that is the case it seems extremely rare since almost no-one has mentioned it without clear finding of oil drips and other. could it be the condenser cooler fan? not getting any input from the PCB? what else could it be? I would much appreciate your time and help with this matter.

Hello, the compressor of my dryer gets up to 82 ° C warm. In my opinion, the very high temperature is an indicator that refrigerant has been lost in the cooling circuit? Does this mean that the energy advantage of a heat pump dryer is no longer available? Thank you for your opinion.
@1989Chrisc4 жыл бұрын
Im a refrigeration engineer. Just wanted to say that 80 degrees is a bit warm but not too hot to say the gas is gone. If the gas was gone it wouldnt take long before it would start tripping on its thermal overload or burn out depending on the number of times it cools down and starts again. Can you see what refrigerant it has in it? Some have higher superheat than others. You have to think. Nothing is really cooling down the compressor other than the refrigerant coming back on the suction line, if the discharge line is 55 degrees and superheat is 10 degrees plus a few more degrees for heat of compression thats not far from 82 degrees you got. Make sure all filters and coils (evap and condenser) are clean. Most issues with machines like this are airflow in the right places

Wonder if you can help me with my heat pump dryer. Sometimes it works absolutely fine (30%) and other times it just keeps going and the clothes never dry (70%). When it's working after 30 mins or so the sides of the dryer are warm but if it's not working the sides are cold. I've followed the instructions in this video, stripped it down and cleaned out all of the fluff from everywhere but it still only works properly some of the time. Any ideas what may be my issue and what I can do to test?
@jaysjetskis2 жыл бұрын
Hi. I honestly have no idea.. without looking as that really isn't a common problem.. if your is a hybrid model it could be that different programms are using the heater element and some are only using the heat pump.. if you have a eco and speed option.. the speed will activate the heater

I there is no gas in the sistem, is there anything that i can do about it?

Does anyone know what the temperature difference is between setting on delicate and level 2 dryness, no manuals seem to specify degrees C rather they just state a 'lower temperature' .

I have a hoover dynamic next heat pump dryer, it switches off n but when you start a cycle it’s tripping house electrics, any ideas
@gscott16045 жыл бұрын
Does it trip RCD which governs multiple circuits or does it just trip the circuit it's on?

thank you for the clip I have an LG heat pump slightly more modern than this one which is not drying I hope you can give me tips, I opened it like yourself suspecting fluf or water pump failiure but its so clean inside and water pump working well but the refrigerant evaporator is not getting cold and the condenser not getting hot after running for 15 minutes !!! the compressor is getting hot and i hear humming but no serious heat difference between condenser and evaporator !! can this be empty gas ? or failed compressor ? how can i tell and do they refill the gas ? if the system leaks once it will always leak ?

I have the same problem. Did you manage to resolve?
@BariMusawwir2 ай бұрын
@@spurs079 most common is blockage by fluf or water pump failiure which is easy to fix if you open it but my one tuned out the compressor has failed so its useless

@@BariMusawwir hi mate thanks for replying. Cleaned everything. I’m pretty sure it’s the compressor as bypassed the relays and sent power to compressor. Was getting hot but the pipes weren’t delivering the desired temps to the condenser and evaporator. Are the compressors expensive?
@BariMusawwir2 ай бұрын
@@spurs079 thats exactly like me so I gave up because the compressor is the expensive part i guess,,, but if you have the warranty proof of purchase they have 10 years on the compressor if you can show them that its the compressor. i was told the compressors are very unlikely to fail but looks like they do but if you can get the warranty they will just replace the entire unit for you but i can not do that because i bought it second hand
@spurs0792 ай бұрын
@@BariMusawwir I bought it in 2014 but sadly I remember throwing the receipt away a few months ago. Anyway would have been another drama trying to prove it. Ie independent reports, call out charges etc. Going to have accept defeat and buy another machine. Any recommendations?

Hey! great video! thanks for this! I have a question, wondering if you could help me: I just started using LG 8KG heat pump with eco hybrid. After 4 uses, I realised that I forgot to empty the condensed water tank and I noticed water under the dryer. Question: Is it normal to have some drips of water from that little rubber hose on the left side of the dryer even if the condensed water tank is empty? And should I always have a hose attached so water can be drained from the dryer or is the tank enough> If i dont forget to clean it after each use? Should I let it sit and completely dry off so I can test it for any leakage? Thanks for any tip you can give.

Theres a tank at the bottom which will always hold a little water but it will get pumped up into the top tank. Just remember to empty that every dry cycle and youl be ok :-) the water pump needs to be immersed under water in order for it to work. Hence the small amount of water stored at the base of the machine . Its so the water pump can live underwater :-)

Out of curiosity, is this model using convertible frequency inverter/compressor like the newer ones?
@jaysjetskis5 жыл бұрын
Many of the newer ones are still using a permanent capacitor start and run on a single phase induction motor driven scroll compressor like this one . So no this is a standard compressor. One that springs to mind is the panasonic heat pump dryers use a 3 phase bldc motor but same rules apply concerning temperautre increase inside the drum :-)
@frank73535 жыл бұрын
@@jaysjetskis Thanks for the reply. I saw the new RC90U2AV2W/RC90U2AV3W are advertised as dual inverter convertible frequency, and the newer samsung ones even have electronic expansion valve. They look better than some air conditioners : )
@jaysjetskis5 жыл бұрын
@@frank7353 oh cool. the black one in the video has a variable metering device aswell but a standard compressor . you gotta love the wanky marketing words they put on them , "inverter convertible frequency" how else would it change the speed of the motor? lol it needs that to work :-)

I'd never buy another heat pump dryer. The whole purpose of a clothes dryer is to dry clothes efficiently. Sadly, our ASKO heat pump dryer is so much less efficient (so much slower!) than any other dryer I've ever used.
