It took me years of styling my hair in a wet bun, every day, to finally realize that. My hair was very long, but the weak spot where the hair tie met my damp hair gradually got broken short. I ended up with a long mullet.😭😆 Never again. Only on air dried or blow dried hair...

Yeah whenever you use water you break the hydrogen bond in the hair and if you don’t reform that bond by styling it then drying it you’re leaving the hydrogen bond broken and in a weak and fragile state.

Omg… thank you for this video! I’ve been a straight natural for 12 years. Started trying to do those twist ins and outs about 2-3 years ago and no offense to anyone… I just hated that look on me. I love my straight natural and got so tired of people telling me my hair was damaged when it was not. I made the decision yesterday (before finding this video) that I was going to stop trying to do all those twisting styles and do what works best and looks good on me… heat trained hair ❤️

The more you use heat the lower in temperature you can go. When I first started I was a 410, now I do 350. Curls are still in tact. I use a blow dry mist heat protectant or a foam, and a fly iron spray heat protectant. Make sure you clarify your hair really good because excess products can damage your curl pattern

I wish there were more stylists like you in my area because they seem impossible to find and trying to figure this out and do this by myself is a lot lol. I recently became natural again and I want to start heat training my hair and I’m just so lost because the one time I got a Dominican blowout, I got really bad heat damage that made me had to start my natural hair journey all over again. It has come to the point where I was contemplating perming my hair just because I like quick and efficient styles and when my hair was permed it was just so much easier for me. I love doing styles like ponytails, half up half down, “sleeker hair styles” … I personally just like that for myself, when I wear my natural hair, the only style I like is where I get an a puff or two and I get bored with it so quickly plus it makes me look soooo young lol. But then I heard about heat training and I want to try that but I’m scared to do it and then receive heat damage because what is the point of having natural hair if it’s damaged? But this video was very informative and educational and I’m glad I found you

Omg all this time I thought my hair was heat damaged, but really it's just heat trained. Okay so before people judge me, this is the only way I knew how to take care of my hair cuz of my mother, also I'm a young broke graduate and tried to have "defined curl" and my "natural hair journey" only costed me lots of money on so many products and hands that hurt. And I'm a teacher with very little free time. So for my hair, I get silk presses every 3 months. I've been getting silk presses tri-annually all my childhood. I get them more frequently now that I'm moved out of my abusive childhood home (and my mom controlled when I would get my hair done so I was only getting silk presses 3x a year) but the natural hair community had me convinced that my hair was heat damaged because I've had silk presses at all. But When I temporarily went "natural" I was able to make beautiful curls and the only actual heat damage I had was from my own doing (I murderer my face framing strands in a fit of rage and self hate) but it's good to know there are others out there who get multiple silk presses a year. Cuz I still consider myself natural cuz it is my own hair on my head. And cuz I've gotten silk presses so long, my hair literally will stay straight for months if there isn't high humidity. Which has been great for me financially and my hair stylists always mention how beautiful and healthy my hair is.

If your hair is not reverting back to its natural state when wet, then it is heat damaged. It’s not reversible. It’s hard to say what your natural state is if your hair is constantly with heat. So you could have damage.

I use the Etae Carmelux deep conditioning treatment that also blocks humidity. I get the Carmel treatment every 7 to 8 weeks and do not add heat on my hair in between. I rarely have any frizz in between and I don't really add any product except a light glossing spray every now and then if it looks a bit dry. I've been adding heat to my hair since August of 2020, but before that I had been a no heat girl for several years after letting my relaxer grow out. My hair has grown like crazy in spite of the shedding I get from my autoimmune disorder. I realized it was easier for me to manage my natural hair straight. Because of the Etae treatment it stays straight until I go back to the salon, and I maintain using flexi rods, Garnier fructis bamboo anti-humidity hair spray, and a good dry shampoo in between on my scalp when it starts to get oily and I need some extra volume. I really don't think it matters how someone wears their hair as long as they try their best to keep it healthy 🥰

Nah. Anyone can look at your ends and see that your hair isn’t damaged. I clicked and subscribed because of those ends, alone. 😍😍😍
@tolaniakinola12412 жыл бұрын
Can you explain what the science behind heat training is specifically? I've heard that over time heat trained hair is less likely to get frizzy after a press until it's washed. Does heat training then mean that our hair becomes more resistant to water/humidity (which would reintroduce those hydrogen bonds) in the environment over time?

Interesting video. I have two sisters that are heat trained naturals. I have to disagree with you tho. If your curl pattern gets altered which every heat naturals girls does over time it is heat damaged. Now that doesn’t necessarily mean that the hair needs to be cut or anything cause heat trained naturals don’t wear their curls so it don’t matter as long as the hair isn’t split. But it is “damaged”. Valid point about curly girls and the ends of the hair when straightening. It’s impossible to see our ends when they are curly hence why i cut my hair straight. But when i did get curl cuts my hair was always uneven when i did blow it out simple because my curls are different around my head. But i was ok with it cause i didn’t wear it like that often
@shelltalkshair2 жыл бұрын
How would you explain altered curls being heat damaged? How is the hair damaged exactly?
@Ikea92921012 жыл бұрын
@@shelltalkshair The curls are losing their natural curl and elasticity. Hence the reason the curls don’t return back to normal which is indicative of damage. But like i said this is normal for a heat trained natural and it doesn’t mean shave your head. As long as the hair doesn’t go limp over night.
@shelltalkshair Жыл бұрын
@@Ikea9292101 you can definitely get the elasticity back in the hair. I do it all the time and that’s why I don’t consider it damage. As long as the hair is t bone straight, the curls will revert back.
@Ikea9292101 Жыл бұрын
@@shelltalkshair You can restore some elasticity but not all. Once you have heat damage and ur hair no longer curls when wet that’s the lost of elasticity and it will never come back. The only way is to cut it off. I’m not saying your hair is that way but honestly i’ve never seen a straight natural yet that doesn’t have some degree of heat damage. Personally i think it’s impossible. If anyone straightens their hair so much it will eventually happen it’s just not supppssd to happen instantly
@shelltalkshair Жыл бұрын
@@Ikea9292101 right and that’s what I say in my videos. You can still heat train and loosen the elasticity and your hair will still be healthy as long as you don’t over due it

Gosh, I wish I would have had better advise a few months ago. I was a “never use heat person” and got heat damage on my first silk press. I’d say the damage is mild and it’s mostly in one section (back left) and mainly affecting the ends. I do have quite a bit of shedding but that was an issue for me even before the silk press. I just want to transition the heat damage out, not a big chop. Can I transition the heat damage and heat train the rest of the hair at the same time?

But after the 3rd yr I decided to flat iron my hair, on the lowest setting at least 3 times using heat protectant and unfortunately my curls became loose and some hairs would not revert back.
