In all of this I can't help but be impressed by the little make shift solutions people always come up with, for instance, that simple, but effective tool, bent nail sticking out of wooden block, to hold the blade while it is cooling after the normalising heats. Some people triple quench harden the 5160,, would that just add more variables and complications ?? I would imagine that subsequent quenches may undo the previous quench results.
@theriversexperience9383

Thank you! Yeah, I would just do one Quench. Each time that you heat it up, it ruins the prior quench.

First off, you and Denis are awesome for shouting out smaller channels. It really makes a difference, numbers wise and validation wise, you are awesome. Next, I really dig the direction you are going with that Bowie. It's looking really good.

I'm really digging this bowie and all the textures you played around with on this one and the karambowie. I liked the karambowie too, but I think I like this blade even more. I think the wow factor just goes up the bigger a knife gets 😃

Yup, I prefer Peanut oil over the others. The smell is nice and easy on the nose. Other oils give of lots of fumes and smells.

Another fantastic and informative video! Thank you! So, for a stock removal blade- do you recomend 3 normalized cycles also? Is this necessary? Thank you again.
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 2 жыл бұрын
I recommend normalizing cycles for pretty much any knife, you don't really know what the steel you are getting has been through before it got to you.

Every time I watch I notice the Grizzly sign. What do you own that’s Grizzly. I’ve always liked the lines in a blade and I’m not a fan of shinny. If someone does everything down to a polished look that’s their deal. It looks ok to me but I wouldn’t buy anything shiny. I love beat up character. Looking good brother.

I own a few Grizzly tools but that is actually a small skate board I made for my kid a while ago. Grizzly is the brand of grip tape on it.

I’m getting my stock from leaf springs. I heat it to flatten it out. Would this be incorporated into the normalizing process? Or is it a moot point?
@theriversexperience9383
@theriversexperience9383 Жыл бұрын
The normalizing process is its own thing. You meet to bring it up to specific temps and then let it cool. This process is done after the forging process.

What about a FULL Hand Guard, for this one? One that protects your Knuckles, and you could smash someone's face with? I'd bet that would look great in your hand or walking down the street in it's Sheath.

I ordered 3ft of 5160 and I have issue drilling pins holes. Other metals give me no issue. Ive tried everything can you help?
@DavidMoonForge
@DavidMoonForge 2 жыл бұрын
You could try annealing it first, by bringing it up to ~1500F - 1600F and then letting it cool slowly in vermiculite or just turn off your forge and let the steel cool slowly in there. That should get the steel to its softest working state.

@@DavidMoonForge it cut maybe 1/4 way through then I got it cherry red and let it cool then used a new titanium bit, nothing but smoke bro. I cut through a piece of 1095 like hot butter. I'm lost af
@DavidMoonForge
@DavidMoonForge 2 жыл бұрын
@@kylemutina7318 it's hard to say without actually seeing your setup. I've never really had problems drilling through 5160 that wasn't hardened. Some things that COULD be possible: 1. It wasn't hot enough and the core wasn't quite as hot as you thought it was. You could fix this by letting it soak for at least a minute or more at nonmagnetic before letting it start to cool. 2. It didn't cool properly (slow enough). Annealing is different from normalizing, and you want your steel to cool at ~20F - 70F per hour. That is WAY slower than in open air, and should take many hours to return to room temperature. 3. Your steel could be some weird variation of metal that is not actually 5160 and thus not behaving like 5160. Just some thoughts. I hope it helps!
@timcasey6815

When normalizing your blade, you show us how you let it air cool by hanging it on a hook. The hook is imbedded in a block of wood set on top of a bench. Each time (three total attempts) the block of wood moves and wobbles, making it difficult to hang the blade on the hook. Why not simply temporarily attach the block of wood to the bench with a clamp!? Problem solved. Why struggle with a red hot hunk of metal indoors. Not really that hard to solve a safety problem. Just a thought. Be safe. Don’t burn down your house or drop a hot blade on your foot. By the way, nice knife.
