Thanks for this idea! I followed the sets you showed, and in less than 24 hours, my pile heated up to over 140 degrees :)

Woot! That is wonderful! We had plenty of practice. 😂 When we first started with our compost it kept going cold, so we had to figure it out. Good luck! Don’t forget to turn it often so it doesn’t heat up too much. 🙂

@@RenewedHomestead how often would you suggest?
@RenewedHomestead Жыл бұрын
2-3 days initially and then we turn it every other day for a hot compost pile. 🙂 When we reheat it I check how it is doing after two days. Do you have a compost thermometer?

You can also fart on the pile. It doesn't actually help, but it's great fun and alleviates the stress of failing with your copost pile.

Thanks for sharing my friends, enjoyed watching this very informative video. We’ve done one 18 compost pile following Billy & William’s instructions and it turned out well. Nothing like making your own compost. We appreciate you guys. 🙏🏻😇👍🏻😊🙌🏻☀️

Hi, we don’t have one that is just dedicated to an 18 day compost. We do have one that shows how we compost a deer carcass. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3LEh3aGaLuSmrssi=xS6Q7Sxtez6SzbgZ @Perma Pastures Farm has a lot of great videos on an 18 day hot compost pile. Great information. I got to get some other set up for water. I am out in the country but am on county water. I need to get a pump to pump out of the creek/swamp at the bottom of the hill. I put a 5-gallon bucket of coffee grounds a week to my compost lol. I layer it with leaves and rotting wood chips. I get coffee grounds from my coffee shop as you mentioned. It smells really great haha.

Hi! Does the coffee of the compost smell great. 😂 Creek water would be great! The chlorine is horrible. 😟 The coffee grounds are great! They do so much for our compost.
@EarlybirdFarmSC2 жыл бұрын
@@RenewedHomestead Yeah it smells awesome. I got about three big huge truck loads of leaves too and that is the best smell. When their breaking down it’s a sweet earthy smell that I can’t get enough of! This compost smells awesome. I’m worried I got too much coffee but I’m doing the slow compost method so hopefully it will be fine. I had t put any water on mine yet. Just letting nature run it’s course. One day I’ll get that creek water pumping up the hill! It’s a good 300-400 ft away at the bottom of the hill.

Now I understand! Lol We have leaves breaking down as well. Nature will definitely break it down. 🙂 We have a cistern that we will be connecting the livestock watering system to. It is down the hill so we have to figure that out as well. Good luck!

A while back I read an article that coffee grounds weren't good if you were trying to get a worm population. I have never researched it though. Sounds gross but human pee helps heat the pile up too. Just make sure it is healthy pee.
@RenewedHomestead2 жыл бұрын
Hi Lynda, I have never heard that. We have used that compost in the garden and still have a lot of worms. I will see what I can find out. Urine is full of nitrogen. It is good stuff. When I see the sheep pee I thank them for the nitrogen. 😂 it also keeps predators at bay.

One of my compost efforts is in a LIFETIME composter. I have been using that kind of composter here in N Utah for years. The worms in my composter, where before now I have thrown my coffee grounds........LOVE my coffee grounds. They have NEVER complained about coffee!
@RenewedHomestead Жыл бұрын
That is great to know! Thank you! We have never had a problem with it, but it is always good to check. 😊
@DSmith-kb3frАй бұрын
I heard that, but I also heard that if you add cardboard it will negate the issue with the earth worms. I’ve always used cardboard in my piles with coffee and other food waste, I always have worms in my piles.

What's the reason to make compost hot?
@RenewedHomestead11 ай бұрын
Hi whatsup24, the microbial activity is what heats up the compost and the heating process is critical to speed up the decomposition process and also For killing weed seeds and anything harmful in the compost. That is a very quick explanation, but does that make sense?

@@RenewedHomestead I really like the fly over video that gives a general impression of how the farmstead is doing. I am interested in the Biefelders and how the comparative potatoe growing methods are doing. My favorite would be a soil testing that established a baseline of how you will improve the soil for years to come. I still want to help with expenses of the tests.
