Just finished the dog house. Works perfectly. Really thank you for thinking out of the box with this innovative DIY.

You know I looked at other heated DIY dog houses. I found yours to be the most cost effective and efficent setup yet. I know the heat lamp will do the job because I use those at work.

What about a door to hold in the heat? I use rubber door mats held on with screws, washers and locknuts. Then I cut a couple of slits in it so the dog can pass through.

This is glorious, I have been researching "build easy dog house" for a while now, and I think this has helped. You ever tried - Ganyan Canicholas Formula - (do a google search ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got amazing results with it.

That’s exactly what I did to build a feral cat housing. Just minus the heating. I threw in straw to keep them warm for the winter.
@Osiris17862 жыл бұрын
I have several feral cat houses and they have straw inside you think if I place the insulation will be enough to keep them warm
@alanguages Жыл бұрын
@@Osiris1786 I cut up styrofoam insulation, then place the mylar wrap around that for the inside walls and lining. I put straw inside as well. I was going to put a heating pad, but unsure if it safe to do so, on top of straw. I am not taking the risk for the ferals and strays. This way, if it ever reaches excess cold, like a polar vortex, I am confident, I did my best to keep the shelter as warm and safe as possible.

Dogs are family and should be kept inside the house.
@gtballou39684 жыл бұрын
Thank you....I agree they should be kept inside mostly and if outside should be very comfortable. In our case, our dog was getting older and could not be left inside alone for any period of time. This was the best solution at the time we could come up with.

Just curious, how does this keep heat inside..? How does this work in this way? Everything I've read said the radiant barrier is used to reduce heat -- I understand this is a completely different use than typical though... I'm guessing it reflects the radiation heat waves, but how much heat is lost to the outside and in what manner? Thank you for this great idea!🙏🙏

i think i would need about 50 of those heat lamps to keep a dog house warm in the -40 temperatures we get up here in Canada :)

Haha true!! I lived in Fairbanks, Alaska for three years and was amazed at how the sled dogs seemed to be unaffected by the cold....living in dog houses with only straw to keep them warm.

My problem is no matter what I do my dogs are 1 year old pit pups and they tear up or wanna play bite everything I’ve spent so much they yank the rubber door flaps off they tear the bedding insulation to shreds I need a way to insulate and hide it from them and heater or something they can’t get to

what battery did you use for this & how did you hook it up? I do not have plugin on the outside of my house is why i ask
@gtballou39685 жыл бұрын
Hello....it was easier for me because I had an outdoor outlet just a few feet from the dog house. You might be able to use a car battery hooked to an inverter, or possibly to some 12V heater that you could probably find on JC Whitney or similar. But...you would have to figure a way to charge the battery regularly. Finding some way to run a cord to an outlet is probably best.

Thanks for the comment... I bought it from Home Depot. It's "Reflectix 16 in. x 25 ft. Double Reflective Insulation." Store SKU #884250. Website has it listed as $16.25 for a roll. Good luck!

Be very careful with infrared heating elements. Not recommended. They can be very "directional", concentrating & focusing the heat to one area (making your pet very uncomfortable). That 60W infrared element likely produces way too much heat. If you're going to use it, best to have the heat deflected and redirected. Your standard 60W incandescent bulb is a better choice. ALSO, if you're going to build something like this, place a thermostat inside so you'll know the temperature inside at a glance. One additional comment - if you're going to build an outdoor closure, make it at least twice the size of this enclosure and include bedding/blankets (bedding/blankets alone provide 80% of your pets needs).
@gtballou39684 жыл бұрын
Thank you....great comments. I considered the thermostat inside, perhaps even a temperature switch that would turn it on and off automatically.

Bedding is 80% of a pets needs? Nah I think food and shelter trump blankets. They’ll literally die without food and shelter.

Do you have your heat lamp running to power from your house or on straight battery
@gtballou39685 жыл бұрын
Hello....I kept the dog house right up next to the house, so I plugged it in to the outlet right by the back door. I don’t know how long a deep cycle battery would last or how much the cold might affect it. Plugging in seemed to be the safest route.

Guess what's warmer? THE MAIN HOUSE
@gtballou39683 жыл бұрын
Yes of course the house is warmer. Unfortunately our dog was getting old and couldn't be left alone inside. Like many owners, we were trying everything so we could keep the old girl around as long as possible. Don't worry, she spent the vast majority of her life well-loved in a warm and comfortable home. Sometimes you do need a warm place for our four legged friends outside.

Your dog may be hyper active or have separation anxiety. I have a young high energy hound. It helps to give her a rawhide chew once a week and lots of exercise. When I can spend lots of time with her the destruction slows down. I use cedar chips in her igloo doghouse because she will destroy a bed. Cold nights she comes inside and is confined to a room with old furniture that I don't care about. Good luck with your pup!
