Personally I like shoveling, I like the exercise. I own a snowblower but I rarely use it except on REALLY heavy snowfalls. In fact I'm also someone who clears snow for a living, lol. Don't get me wrong, I like the idea of heated driveways, that's why I'm viewing this. I've offered to pay to put in a heated driveway for my father who is 85 years old, but he does not want to be bothered with it. Plus he says scraping small snowfalls gives him something to do. (I come over and clear the heavy snowfalls for him.)

2 questions, why didn't you rent or borrow a pex unwinder? more important i see a little pitch on your driveway and a little more pitch on the street, now the question is we just got 12" of snow and it's 10deg. outside and your snowmelt comes on, where does all the water go ?
@michealhelpss63634 жыл бұрын
I’m thinking the water run off would go down the appropriate water sewer drainage. This is an assumption now if you can’t tell I have no idea lol
@1packatak21 күн бұрын
These setups usually average sno melt of 2” per hour. If you get your system on and warmed up, most of the snow will evaporate as it hits the driveway. Kind of like water in a hot pan. The rest of the melt will simply drain away just like rainwater. That’s why all of the pitches are in the driveway and street.

@andygonzalez701211 ай бұрын
Hello Jeff. How about an update now 4 years later. How's it working. I just learned about these things and after reading and watching other installs I see yours is different in that you used ONE circuit or tubing to run the solution to the driveway. All the others broke up the single loop into multiple shorter loops. A similar driveway to yours in one other install they divided it into five loops. The goal - to evenly distribute the heat and not have it all in the beginning of the loop. Wondering your results
@JeffWybo11 ай бұрын
Hey so I’ve sold the property! However the neighbour told me today that it’s still working. Lol. Now I didn’t have just one loop each loop went out a certain distance and back to the manifold. I have a bit of a series on here where I show more of the install maybe check out the other vids? The epic fail one is just me saying that no residential plumbers wanted to tackle this project so it took me forever to find the right contractors to do the job.

Try a tenth of a mile long going up at 45 degrees in the winter in Pennsylvania. We got two inches of pretty much solid ice and we can barely get half way up. Thankfully we have an even spot from when we lived further down the hill where we can park cars that can't make it up (not my choice as I didn't have one, being like 11 at the time). Loved watching this group of guys come together to git-r-done! The fact that there still isn't a followup video makes me think it may have been a fail! I hope not. Hydronic heating is a damn science and when people try to DIY it, they are almost ALWAYS disappointed with the results. Don't ask me how I know... Those are some really tight bends in the pex. I'd be afraid of kinking. But the 6" spacing makes for some great coverage. Also, the guy with the saw was making me nervous. I insisted on my contractor using hand seams only - to avoid cutting any of the lines. Did you keep the manifolds mounted to the outside wall like that? Out in the weather? Or was that just temporary for pressurizing the system during the pour? Also, what zone are you in? Did you use Glycol to keep from freezing? PLEASE do a follow-up video with more details and with footage of this driveway in action! We need to see more! Thank you for posting!

Why put in steel wire mesh if the mesh is laying on the ground......you should have saved the money except for using it as spacing for the PEX. The wire MUST be pulled into the "crete" to be effective as reinforcement. We use # 3 bar on 2" chairs (dug in) 18" O.C. with a 6" or better pad. We also use rolling diamond saws with a depth gauge when cutting up heated pads.. Nice job though all things considered.

I wonder if this would hold up the same in Thunder Bay. We do get more snow, maybe 30-40% more. If theres too much snow, would it just melt to water and go straight through the drainage system on the road? If theres too much could it turn to ice? So curious, make sure to keep us posted on a super snowy day!

I see so many problems with this institution. 1. You snaked the pex instead of doubling back. This would result in uneven heating. 2. You did not lift the wire mesh off of the vapor barrier/insulation so you are going to be heating the ground more than the slab as the Pex is not in the slab. As a correct install should have mesh 2” in slab. 3. You cut the slab instead of hand grooving concrete. This will pull on the pex as the concrete cracks also since the mesh is not in the slab there will be more cracking.

"You should have": * Put rigid foam under all the concrete, a radiant blanket doesn't do anything without an air gap. * Put foam insulation wrap around the PEX where the expansion joints were going to be cut. * Used PEX-AL-PEX so you don't get a ton of air into your closed system from diffusion. * Used a de-coiler (a spindle for the PEX coil) - you twisted the heck out of that PEX, probably going to fail! * Used bigger turn loops, you kinked the heck out of that PEX * Used a different pattern for the melt - you want the hottest liquid going down the tire tracks first, and it you wrap a supply and return portion next to each other it evens the whole slab temperature (reducing the risk of cracking) FYI, the calculation for the boiler load is 50W/square-foot (170.6BTU/Hr/sq-ft) or 500W/square-meter (1706BTU/Hr/sq-meter), you can even that out with a thermal buffer tank, and one or more boilers with a high turn-down ratio (so that you can sequence, "stage", and increase your reliability). Using a thermal buffer tank (looks like a water heater), allows the boiler to not short cycle so much on low load, and hydraulically isolates the loop(s) from the boiler so that you don't condense too much on boiler startup. You could also try doing a solar water heater even up north - I've seen people who are doing it in Alaska, so it possible up there.
