The assignment was not to pick "players who might play most minutes this season than last". You can argue it's not a breakthrough when people have known about the players being talented for years so no one ever has a breakthrough

I feel as though loads of people in this comment section are fundamentally misunderstanding what a breakthrough season is. Its when a young player quite literally "breaks through" into the first team from the academy/u21's/reserves or what have you. Evan ferguson and enciso broke though into brighton's first team last season and so can't have another breakthrough season.

I don't think you can have new signings (from a different league) and call them premiere league breakthru.. A breakthru is someone who's already gotten their feet wet IN THE league but NOW are fulfilling their potential. SO as an example-- Haaland didn't have a break thru season last season. But if (as an example) Richarlison now take Kane's spot and scores 35 (or something) THAT would be Richarlisons break thru season (at least in a Spurs shirt)

Agreeing with Theo on this one. 'Breaking through' is literally for players who havent showcased their talent at all before. Not necessarily young players, but you can't have an established veteran from another league have a 'break through' again when they join the Prem. Thats just a seasoned pro still playing well...

Simply moving to a new league doesn't make it a breakthrough season. It's about finding relatively unknowns, that were not seen last season or were overlooked, but by the end of this season are constantly recognised when having conversations around football. Haaland didn't 'Breakthrough' last season, but Akanji did, because he was seen completely differently by the community based on his performances over the season. Young players dominate these lists, mainly because they're the least known quantities by the general football fan, so expectations are low and evidence is lacking.

For once I have to agree with Theo. A breakthrough season is literally someone whose capacity is relatively unknown to most and no one expects them to have an impact but they do. Like garnacho last season. A star signing who is an international player and has had multiple seasons in a top 5 league can never be considered as a breakthrough player. The changing of the goal posts after Theos comment on messi also doesn't make sense if a player gets a sudden increase in GA like salah did at liverpool that isn't a breakthrough that's a standout cause that is when a player really sets themselves apart from the rest

Theo is right. It’s essentially arguing Erling was a breakthrough player last season. We already knew how good he was and his potential regardless of where he “broke through.” You can argue a person can only break though once, breaking through in another league and then performing in another league means you’re merely a consistent player. In this sense break through definitely means breaking through into the first team and becoming a week in and week out, recognized player. All of the players on Reevs list have been purchased to be starters and already broken through as they wouldn’t have got the transfers then?

Breakthrough by definition means sudden & dramatic rise. It doesn't therfore have to be someone never played PL e.g. youngsters or someone established from other league like Diaby/Haland. Considering Mudryk was massively underwhelming last season and Jackson is fairly unknown entity, they both are good shout for the prospective list of Breakthrough players.

Rico Lewis is already known as one of the greatest fullback talents in world football. It's hardly a breakthrough for him. A real breakthrough would be someone performing to a level we never expected from them in the first place. Like what Salah did. So that would be Mudryk/Antony getting 20 GA, Jackson scoring 20+. Trippier had his breakthrough season last season and he's almost 50 years old but that was the first time he got mentioned with the likes of Reece James, Kyle Walker and TAA. Enciso could easily have a breakthrough SEASON, not just 2 months. To me, "breakthrough season" just means a player breaking through to the next level for long enough that it's not just considered a purple patch.
