P.S. Fun fact: Frangiola means “buckthorn.” (Chris’ name was Americanized.) “Buckthorn is a nondescript-looking shrub used for hedges in the Old World, but it’s crossed the Atlantic, too. Chris’ namesake is a horribly invasive plant here, overtaking everything like kudzu. It’s also noxious. Animals, most birds, insects; even bees avoid it. It tastes so bad that even deer won’t eat it. It’s so poisonous that sometimes birds try the berries and are afflicted with diarrhea so bad it causes death. Even worse, the diarrhea spreads the seeds everywhere. It leafs out when other plants are dormant in winter. That, plus no natural predators, means it chokes out all the native plants in its path. It overgrows even groundcover plants, the soil then washes away, & the result is erosion of stream banks & lake shores. Also, as the soil washes away, it picks up pollutants like fertilizer, oil, and trash, which washes into streams and lakes, polluting them and lowering drinking water quality. Buckthorn leaves have more nitrogen and calcium than native plants. These chemicals are delicious to decomposers like bacteria, fungi, and worms. So delicious that they compete for them, and this causes boom-or-bust cycles, damaging the Animal Kingdom down to the microbe level. And, the decomposed leaves add nitrogen to the washed-out, groundcover-stripped soil, changing it so it’s now hospitable to other invasive weed species like invasive garlic mustard, and also invasive European earthworms. Buckthorn is almost impossible to get rid of. Along the Mississippi River, volunteers are assembling in groups, renting equipment to try to chop, pull, and dig out buckthorn, but professional crews are often necessary. The only way to ensure the seeds’ destruction is with fire. I think it would be best if there was just the main camera angle with the tv and stop switching back and fourth between the single shots. It’s not good editing. I think it would be much better received with a single shot and I know often times people miss what is on the tv screen because you are cutting back and fourth between single shots so much.
