At 1:45 you can see how traumatized JD is from seeing his mother die in the explosion. His father either doesn't see or doesn't care what he does to his son by showing this tape. Maybe if his father took care of JD after the death of his mother and not constantly moving because of his deconstruction company, things would have turned out differently.

I never understood their interaction I thought JD's dad had a few screws loose but as I'm rewatching it I think it's their coping mechanism since they both lost JD's mom and had to get closer and didn't know how to do that so they opted to tell each other what they want or need from each other by using this passive-aggressive way of talking Also I think JD partly blames his dad for his mom's death the way he brings it up in front of him is strange

I kinda like J.D's dad's personality,to a point.There are times when his dad's personality is a bad influence,such as with J.D's mom, and times when the personality helps J.D,such as dealing with the 2 bull jocks in the cafeteria. Apparently some people think the building demolished at 1:33 is "the library in Texas" and this is a video his dad made of blowing up the library with JD's mother in it. That's.... wrong. The building at 1:33 is the "fleabag hotel" he refers to at 0:15 that "a tribe of withered old bitches" are suing to prevent him from demolishing. (It even says "HOTEL" on it.) That's who he says the judge tells to "slurp shit and die". (The judge assuredly never said those words, he's paraphrasing to reflect his own feelings about it.)
