When I was younger, anything "gay" was usually just played up for laughs. It's so great to see sincere relationships between people that are played just as normal as straight couples with just as much love. That's a change from my younger days I'm glad has grown and thrived

And before the "gay character for laughs," there was "even saying someone is gay could end their life." On WKRP, in 1978, one character is incorrectly called gay and he threatens to jump off a building. It was basically saying "being gay is this horrible thing" (which, obviously, it isn't). It's amazing seeing how much LGBTQIA+ representation has progressed. Is there further to go? Sure, but sometimes it's good to take a moment to appreciate the progress that's already been made.

And while Amity’s environment wasn’t any better (the second to last episode of Season 2 reveals just how evil her mother is), she was pretty tame compared to Catra. That said, her relationship with Luz was healthier from the beginning.

What I love about their relationship is how they first started together. Sammy is a girl with a bright attitude and making everyone smile and Yasmina was shy but she is strong. I was always a massive fan of comics and loved Poison Ivy when I was younger, and I remember my first full encounter (not filtered by homophobic parents and teachers) with the queer community was reading a DC comic which featured the two's romance. Sad that Mariner and Jennifer from Star Trek: Lower Decks weren't included. It's interesting because Mariner doesn't want everyone to know at first, but after a time her friends figure things out and are thrilled for her. There's even an episode where Jennifer takes Mariner to one of her friend's gatherings and Mariner is bored stiff until the two of them decide to stun the party. Jennifer reveals that she loves Mariner because she's so unpredictable. It's a cute love story.

12:53 Hence why Amaya and Janai would be my Dragon Prince choice for LGBTQ+ couples. Though not quite as egregious as maybe other examples, Queen Annika & Queen Neha's representation still suffers because of being killed off. To me, having LGBTQ+ characters survive truly gives the representation an extra boost and meaning, seeing as the inverse at best creates an asterisk and at worst destroys the representation completely.

1: The top 5 on this list are hard hitters and all deserve to be in the top 5. 2: All the top 5 could be considered “kids” shows. Makes my theory that “kid” shows can to representation better, mostly because adult shows sometimes treat it as a joke, have more weight. (Note: not all adult shows treat it as a joke. I know that.)

While I know the show isn’t well known yet, I feel like they should’ve put Ham Tobin and Crispin Cienfuegos from “The Great North” into the list. The show handles LGBTQIA+ representation very well by portraying it as something natural and everyone in the show is accepting of it.

Luz and Amity deserve number one more than anyone else. They are the only same-sex couple in a cartoon I was truly invested in and they didn't at all seemed forced. There was very careful and delicate writing that built their relationship and I genuinely felt the writers we're simply trying to tell a good story and not trying to push a progressive agenda. Ruby and Sapphire are...let's face it...kind of boring. They're just you're average fairy tale romance and their relationship is mainly just a plot device for Garnet as a character. Lumity feels a lot more genuine and somehow as a strongly conservative male, I found myself rooting for them to get together. Just goes to show how much good writing and characterization can effect a show.

I really adored the queer couples on Young Justice - there is a gay romance and a polyamorous, interspecies relationship. There is also a non-binary character.
