Heathers - perfect for a low maintenance garden.

Heather provides 12 months of colour and are very easy to grow. They retain leaf colour all year round. Flowers through Autumn, Winter and Spring.
Plant in groups of the same variety for a carpet ground covering which will suppress the weeds too. Add Spring flowering bulbs under the heather which will come up through the Heathers for height and colour early in the year.
Perfect for a low maintenance garden.

I tried to grow heathers in my alkaline soil, mulching them with ericaceous compost, watering with rain water only and liquid-feeding with ericaceous feed. Poor things were struggling for two years. I eventually saved them by transplanting them in containers with ericaceous compost. The problem is ericaceous compost contains peat. In Ireland peat extraction is unsustainable (unlike in the US or Canada) and results in release of vast amounts of CO2 and destruction of natural habitats of rare birds, insects and other wildlife. So, no more growing heathers unless I move to an area with naturally neutral/acidic soil.

So heathers are better off in PEAT FREE soil???Acidic soil is made by eggshells and vinegar like garden lime. I made lots. Keeping egg shells is a wise choice. And the choice is yours my dear dear. Is there not any Peat free compost is sold in bags where you are?

@Quentin Lennox water on the leaves? Hmm I heard about water on leaves to do with another plant. This means these are better grown in greenhouse or covered in winter when it's raining. Mind you rain water is excellent for blueberry and tomato plants

Hello! I put my Heathers pot on top the room heater next the window (btw is not that the heat is unbearable there, I have a phalaenopsis in the same location and is doing great!) But my Heathers dried out to a critical point... How can I make them recover form the heat wave? I pout them awy from the geater already and I've been water them more often, is that ok? Please help me!

Dwarf variety will grow in pots with good drainage in a sunny spot but sheltered from winds.
