My mother is a Lamont. The Lamonts emigrated to Prince Edward Island from Skye early in the 19th century. Murdoch Buie Lamont fought at the Battle of Culloden against the wishes of the clan and survived to emigrate to Canada with his son and nephew. He was quite the character.

My mom’s maiden name was Johnston as well. She was still mostly scottish descent, even though her family has been in North Carolina since the 1700’s. My dna shows that I’m 2/3 Celtic. I would guess the majority of that is Scottish with some Irish thrown in. The real suprise was the 20% scandinavian !

My gran was called Margery Mackinnon she was born in Glasgow and her dad was a clergyman. she used to tell me, 40 years ago, that her ancestors had a castle on the isle of skye and that Mackinnon meant sons of the seals. She loved all her tartan. She went to st andrews university. I have never been to Scotland but the Mackinnon society may be doing a tour of ancestral sites this year, now I really want to go.

In the distant past legend has it that my Driscoll ancestors went from Ireland to Scotland. Descendants came back to County Down, but were then named Drysdale. A friend said the old spellings especially in Gaelic were similar. Drysdale's were back in Co Down since at least 1784. I have not been able to find the Scottish link so far.

davisonh1 Davidson was a neighbor of my ancestors (Rutherford), though I've been trying to fill in the blanks for years now because my immediate family line left river tweed area after their Abbey's and homes were burnt down and their lands stripped away by England (King Edward1, if I'm remembering correctly (1621) for fighting against England. There's a lot of bad blood between my family and England (settled there around 1100s) and with the Kerr's, however, as much infighting there was between the clans, the Kerr's were also family a d would take in the Rutherford's to fight together with the rest of the Middle Marches against the English oppression, along with the West and Eastern Marches (eg- Rutherford, Kerr, Little, Scott, Elliot, Davidson, and Douglas, amongst other border reiver families, sorry for those I can't think of off the top of my head).. From what I understand, all of these families married with neighbors along the borders, though it was illegal to marry across the border, and so it's highly likely that the border reiver families are all related to some degree.

Simon de Ramsey is historically recognized to be the first Ramsey in Scotland, the Ramsey Clan can be linked to Dalhousie castle and to further to be a British ships physician and to America to become a preacher . I believe a university in Maryland has about over 300 years of His off spring. I've read it. One of Simons off spring fight against the English . And the Ramsey who built Dalhousie castle is known. Jacobite cave on the grounds were they carved there names on the walls the castle was extended and to be wife's dowry paid for the extension think was the same boyds family that was a commander at bannock burn . Yes, a clan is just a big family. Everyone born with the surname macintosh is linked to that clan, they may also be attached to several other clans through the maternal lines. It's not as easy and clear cut as it used to be when the clans were very territorial and all lived in one area. There are no hard and fast rules to this!

Yes indeed, you have links to the clan. It's not unusual to be associated with several clans as there were marriages between clans which were allies. My own family is a mixed bag of McLeod, Fraser, MacGregor and all sorts! The main affiliation is normally through the paternal line, but there's no hard and fast rules!
