Thanks SimpleHealthyLiving! :) I did a ton of research and The CM style spoke to me. It was a leap of faith going from the boxes curriculum to a more selected based style but we are already seeing the fruits of our labor through our children's curiosity of the world and how they go about investigating it. How long have you homeschooled?

This is awesome. My girlfriend and I are trying to make the decision on whether or not to homeschool and the whole thing seems like a monolithic, gargantuan, daunting task. seeing it work so simply and directly is incredibly reassuring and makes it seem completely normal and entirely manageable. Thanks so much.
@HeatherTorresTV8 жыл бұрын
It really is as crazy and structured as you want to make it. I believe in the younger grammar years that it's super important to lay the foundation of learning. That means working on reading, writing, and math and letting the other subjects be supplements to those three keys. I also want to create joy everyday because they will only have one childhood and I will only have little ones for this time period so I want to enjoy every moment. :)

@tracyjonesschwan97008 жыл бұрын
+Heather Torres OMG !! That's so awesome !! My husband is from Middletown I'm originally from NYC . After having our son we wanted to get out of NYC for many reasons. We decided on homeschooling from the time our son was 1. And gosh we were hit with," your child won't have any socialization ", " Aren't you worried that people might think he's weird ? " . I couldn't believe people actually thought these type of things!. I think a lot of people forget the true purpose behind school , and that is Education. I'm a gymbooree teacher & we have been taken our boy there since he was 3months , he's such a friendly little guy and is supper social. School should be about learning . I started to introduce him about 18 months. He was drawing lines & trying to make circles , so we figured it would be great to start. He's now 25 months . And it's been a blast so far for all of us. We're doing year round, with a week off every 3 weeks. I can't wait for more videos from you !!!! 😄👍
@HeatherTorresTV8 жыл бұрын
TRACY JONES SCHWAN that's awesome! Yes, those are the most frequent questions I get. Now I have my one liners to answer them but honestly, before we decided to homeschool I was 'that person" who asked those same questions because I just didn't know anything other than the traditional way of education. It's been an awesome experience and I hope this channel shows parents that it's possible to educate at home and still be "normal" :)

@HeatherTorresTV8 жыл бұрын
Hi The Precious Years!! :) Thanks for watching. So my two little share a room too. I have found that having them in seperate rooms during quiet time is the ticket. We rotate rooms every week and they think its the coolest thing. One will be in there room and the other gets to choose the spare bedroom or my room. The rule for quiet time is they must remain on the bed for the first 30 min and then they are allowed to quietly play after that for the remainder of the quiet time. It takes repetition but they are in a good routine with it now. Hope that helps! I'm excited to check out your channel too :)

Loved this!!! Could you somehow tell us how you homeschooled your daughter when your son was still little? I'm struggling to focus on my almost 5 year old because my 2.5 yr old son is wild! Any tips would be soooo appreciated!
@HeatherTorresTV8 жыл бұрын
It's just a crazy time! That's just being real :) My main goal was to keep it simple. Yes, I wanted to have all the bells and whistles but when you have little ones around it gets really hard. So figure out what your goals are. At age 5 is it read, writing, math? Then make that the MAIN focus and let everything else be a part of what you do as a family and not so much "school" time. Make school happen when your littlest is napping. That was key for us! Another tip is to have a quiet basket of items (puzzles, dry erase board, big beads) things your youngest can do mostly independently and use it ONLY when you are schooling your oldest. Then just have grace. Grace with yourself, your youngest, and your 5yr old. Hope that helps! ;)

Great video!!!! Thank you for posting! I have been thinking about homeschooling my children for some time now - how do you start the process?
@HeatherTorresTV8 жыл бұрын
+Joy Garman Hi Joy! Welcome. I am going to be posting a video about this soon but for now here is what I recommend doing: 1) Check out your state requirements for homeschooling. Each state has specific requirements from "have a great time and do what you want" to "keep a record of everything you do and establish a private homeschool business." 2)Decide what you want to teach! -- Do you want to use a paid for curriculum, a free curriculum, or piece it together. 3) Decide your teaching style and your kiddos learning style. This is a really detailed one but I would say if your kids are coming out of public school you will want to have a period of time called de-schooling to figure out how you like to teach and how they like the learn. Hope this helps :) Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with.

Good Morning! I have a quick questions/issue about some of the curriculum i have chosen for my son. I wrote you about 2 months ago, when i decided to take on this Homeschool journey and things are going relatively well although still adjusting to our needs. So decided on CM theory, but I am having an issue with the Shakespeare selection. I do not feel my 8 year old is ready to try and understand the moral choices that Shakespeare writes about (Gentleman of Verona specifically), he is asking very specific questions about what a "lover" is and why did he go and like another girl....ect.... so he is listening, but i don't want to try and explain yet...I prefer to maintain innocence as long as possible. What is your opinion about this? Also do you have any suggestions of other literature selection for the timeline of year 2?
@HeatherTorresTV8 жыл бұрын
Elizabeth Slagle I totally agree. We have a Shakespeare's for kids audio book I downloaded and we listen to it from time to time but we aren't actually doing any study of it yet. I would say, no rush on it at all. I know the CM theory says to start Shakespeare in the early years but if you skipped it for a year or two it would still be fine.

when I have children, I planned on homeschooling because currently my school life is a living hell. I personally don't want my kid to suffer. But I do sorta like the public school curriculum. I wanted to do subject days basically. Where (example) Monday would be Science day, to start off with a big boom for the week. then Tuesday we go to English, to get it over with. math would be Wednesday. and History/Geography would be Friday. School hours is basically whenever they can get homework done, or whenever I can finish a lesson. But school wouldn't be over until everyone finishes their work. So they have no pressure based on time. I'm also going to bring music into the school days. When their 10, I'll start choir, band, and art. I'm gonna buy instruments over the time, and introduce them to the kids. I'll teach them vocal ranges, and have little concerts at the parks. The band isn't limited to just my kids. It's for any kid that wants to learn about band. I won't charge them either. of course Art would be an all day thing, where kids can learn about famous artists. They can do art whenever. What I'll also do is have an "art wall" if we buy a house they can have a wall they can draw on, and it will represent their creativity. snack time would be before and after lessons. And Break time is whenever they feel stressed or needs to just "chill" they can just put a yellow card up and they can relax, use the bathroom, or do whatever they need to do. the lesson would be paused too. does this sound like a good homeschooling method?? I'm sorry it's kinda all over the place sadly.

Hi and welcome. We have a small list of reasons why we homeschool, some are on the HS vs PS video and others are more private to my husband and I. +HexaQueen D Hi :) Welcome.I checked out your Kentucky homeschool laws and found this great resource to get you started. education.ky.gov/federal/fed/Documents/Kentucky%20Homeschool%20Information%20Packet.pdf Looks like Kentucky has a few requirements to follow when deciding to homeschool. You can start homeschooling preschoolers without the school districts or Kentucky state involvement. I would recommend NOT purchasing a ton of materials. Start with your local library and Pinterest. You can find really great FREE preschool curriculums online that other homeschooling moms have put together and put on the internet for free. I have several boards in my Pinterest site separated into categories to help navigate. (pinterest: HeatherRTorres) Hope this helps! Let me know if I can answer any questions for you!

Hey Heather, I'm not sure if you will see this or not b/c I know you filmed this video a long time ago, but I was curious when you do a loop schedule, do you have a time limit on how long your spend on each thing in your loop, etc. I'm trying to figure out this whole loop schedule thing and I'm not doing so hot. ;) Thanks girl!
@HeatherTorresTV7 жыл бұрын
Hi! We spend about 10-15 min on each of the topics. I don't set a timer or anything. I am more about the rhythm rather than the time limit. Sometimes they are really into whatever we are doing and other times they aren't so we move quickly through it. If you try it and it's not working then move to something else. We also cut out loop in 1/2 since I made this video because it was too much time at the table for them. So now I just rotate things in as we finish other things.

My little girl is going to start 1st grade soon. We are behind on the reading, writing, spelling area of schooling. She loses interest quickly. I have tried breaking it up through out the day which has helped but do you have a program you might suggest? There is no way my daughter could write a book report yet.
@HeatherTorresTV8 жыл бұрын
Hi Kira! Remember, the beauty of homeschool is having the ability to move at your child's learning pace. "Behind" or "ahead" is a standard we are placing on our child. This video is at about the 1/2 way mark in our 1st grade year. Stick with the shorter lessons but make sure they are focused and fun. That is the key. Learning has to be fun in the early ages. For handwriting I would suggest Handwriting Without Tears. We actually skipped a traditional spelling curriculum this year and really focused on words she was interested in. We still corrected words as we were going and I would throw in spelling challenges throughout our week but not an actual spelling curriculum. I used this book as a baseline for ideas: SPELLING WORKOUT LEVEL B PUPIL EDITION As for a reading program -- this year we used The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading. We used this on a weekly bases within our reading time. You are doing a fabulous job so keep going!!! :) Just make it fun and enjoy these years with her. Hope that helps!

I find that we have LESS arguments than we've ever had because the role between authority is blended. We are able to work through problems easier because we have more time together. Seems like the opposite of what would happen but its totally true! They follow direction better because we arent rushed to do stuff and they have more freedom to learn what they like so there are less things they are upset about. Its a really cool process.

What do you do for work that allows you to work during nap time like that? I have been trying to figure out some extra income, but have trouble finding a flexible job without leaving my kids in someone else's care.

My husband and I own a Digital Marketing Strategist and my husband and I own a digital advertising agency. So we can work from anywhere at anytime. There are so many wonderful jobs online - copywriter, virtual assistant, graphic designer. Tons of job opportunities online.

how do you do the paperwork to grade ?
@HeatherTorresTV7 жыл бұрын
Hi Hilary! Thanks for watching. In the state we are currently in we do not have to submit any formal grading or attendence, only a letter of intent to homeschool. We don't do grading or testing in our homeschool -- we do review topics at the end of a set of lessons to make sure we have mastered it before moving on. I do know other homeschoolers who do have to record keep and there are several templates on Pinterest they have graciously shared.

Hi Heather! I've been watching your videos all evening! I was homeschooled my entire childhood--12 years--and I'm planning to do the same for my kids. Your channel is so inspiring. I can't wait to put some of your ideas into practice, especially those morning baskets!! Although, I still have a couple years to go; my oldest isn't even two yet and my second one is due in a month. There's just no better way to live life in my opinion! Love from a former homeschooler/future homeschool mom!!

WOW! Thank you so much for your kind words. It means the world to me that you would take the time to leave a comment. Any advice from a former homeschool kid I should know??? I always love asking people who grew up being homeschooled.
